Majestic Hotel KL – celebrating New Year eve with a scrumptious dinner!

So, now that Christmas is over (well, not really since it is supposed to be 12 days) let’s start planning the new year eve celebrations shall we? 🙂

A meal at Majestic Hotel KL marries culinary indulgence and the elegance of respected heritage.
The Colonial Cafe is part of the original hotel that was built way back in 1932.
In its heyday, The Hotel Majestic was the grandest hotel in Kuala Lumpur where the most prestigious of parties were held attended by the creme la creme of society.

Imagine yourself part of that now, as the polite and smart waiter ushered you to your seat and unfold that stiffly shaped napkin on your lap.
The menu is bought forward, and the waiter discreetly stepped back as you ponder over your choices; beef or cod?

You made your choice, and handed the menu back to the waiter.
Very well ‘mam,” he said and proceed to pour your amuse bouche, yes pour, because what could be a better appetite stimulator than a flute of champagne?

Atlantic smoked salmon roulade with cream cheese with rocket pesto came cold; the salty salmon coupled with buttery cheese yield to the tongue and washed easily down the throat with a rose.
I must say I’m a big fan of roses, and the Marius Peyol Cotes fe Provence Rose 2013 was pleasant and invigorating with red-berry flavours, which went well with the fish.

This was supposedly to be followed with a soup on the menu but we skipped that and the hot starter was my most anticipated item on the menu that evening.

Maine Lobster Cake With creamy spinach, poached egg and crustacean foam – I mean, doesn’t it sound sexy already?

Unfortunately it wasn’t. The poached egg was a tad overdone as the yolk was quite set. I would have preferred the sweet crab meat in its original form versus having it mixed into a soft paste like this.
The flavour of this didn’t leave much of an impression either. I rinsed my mouth with the very agreeable William Fevre Chablis 2012; pale yellow in colour and medium bodied with good minerality.

The sorbet came after, and our palate were thoroughly cleansed for our mains.

The Pan-Fried Spiced Cod With crushed masala potatoes Coconut turmeric and ginger sauce scored above and beyond the Beef Rossini (Classic Beef tournedos with Foie Gras, toasted brioche And Winter truffle Jus) for us.

The cod is amazingly delicious especially so with the Asian nuances and spices of masala and turmeric.
Kudos to the chef for the fabulous flavours pairing here.
The beef rossini just paled in comparison, through no fault of its own, but merely overshadowed by the cod.

The cod was paired with an Australian Grant Burge Barossa Chardonnay 2013; a luscious, lively wine with appealing citrusy notes and acidity while the red for the meat is the Zema Estate Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2009; a highly revered Coonawarra cabernet and it so happened that 2009 was a particular good vintage.
I found it a bit too tannic for pleasure but it has good body of blackcurrants and oak.

The dessert for New Year eve dinner is a Bitter Coffee and Mascarpone cake served with Cookies & Cream ice cream and fresh fruit salsa with a drizzle of Harveys Bristol Cream.
But since we were in the Xmas season during this tasting, we were served the delectable Christmas pudding topped with White Chocolate Ice Cream With Strawberries and fresh Mango Harveys Bristol Cream instead.
If the Christmas pudding is a gauge, then I’m confident that the bitter coffee and mascarpone cake should be as luscious.

Linger for the Petits Fours and homemade chocolates as you sip a freshly brewed coffee or tea; all part of the dinner set menu.
Relax and contemplate 2015 while The Solianos serenade you with their repertoire of jazz numbers, popular tunes, and standard music with vocal harmony being their forte.
The Solianos perform as a quartet at The Majestic Hotel every evening, rotating between Isabella, Irene, Valentino, Conrado, Rizal and Don.

Alternatively, you can take a journey into the past and relive the exclusivity at The Smoke House.
Embodying the delicious decadence of the 1930’s, The Smoke House at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur features facilities and services with a pool table, a lounge and cocktail bar, a cigar room, a private dining room and even a card room for those who want to engage in a game of bridge or cribbage.
Johnnie The Barman at The Smoke House serves up an impeccable selection of vintage cocktails and a connoisseur’s collection of single malt whiskies. Smoking jackets are also provided upon request.
