This is my first ever mattress in a box experience. Gone were the days where transporting a mattress requires a 2-tonne lorry and 3 men.
On the day when I got a call that my mattress had arrived, I hopped out my front gate and saw the friendly guy unloading a tubular box that didn’t look like a mattress at all. Sure, I’ve watched videos about the amazing way a fat mattress is unpacked and then proofed (yes, like a dough!) to its original size when it was unboxed, but it was still a moment of “Oh! That’s it?” for me!
Origins have been aggressively promoting their mattresses and pillow online and I was not spared from the ads. Since I was considering to change my 10 year old mattress, I didn’t mind the ads. I was however, budget-conscious after months of COVID and lockdown. Nonetheless, all that lockdown time gave me more time for research.
My concern was durability, dust and mite control and if the support is too soft for someone like me with a slight lower back problem. Nothing serious mind you, but every once in a while, I prefer the floor over my bed, just to get my back ‘re-aligned”. My neck problem however, is a constant pain-in-the-neck entirely (pun intended) issue. I’ve thrown away a dozen pillows over the years in my quest for a pillow that could offer me a start to my day minus neck and shoulders tension.
That said, after a week on the Origins mattress, paired with my memory pillow, I admit I am enjoying the mattress with no side effects of backache whatsoever. Granted, it did sank in a little when I lie on it, and since I’m only 42 kg so I was concerned at first!

It took me 3 nights of restful sleep with no lower back ache to convince me that this mattress is worth keeping, and is indeed well-designed for function without sacrificing comfort.
Another noticeable improvement was the cooling effect. I do not sleep with aircon but with only one standing fan plus a thick comforter. It doesn’t happen often, but there are times when I woke up feeling stuffy and warm. This Origin mattress had certainly improved my rest hours, for with the same fan and comforter, I felt cooler with lesser heat trapped between my body and the mattress.
So this is my observations after a week with the Origins mattress. I’m seriously considering the pillow next, but will think about it since it is not specifically designed for neck pains. Anyhow the pillow has a 7-day return clause, so why not eh? 🙂

Granted, it has only been a week, so I’ll update this post in 3 months, 6 months and a year later.
