An avid supporter of Cielo Dolci, I have always admired the founder for his ingenuity in creating unique yet clever flavours that works.
Cielo’s Nasi Lemak gelato is first in the country and he continues to surprise with unexpected flavours like tau fu fa (soymilk), kedondong, Genmaicha (roasted brown rice + green tea), pineapple tart and popcorn.
His newest creations are beef bacon and basil ice cream, both of which are cleverly incorporated into savoury dishes as part of a main course in his latest venture – Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe by Cielo Dolci @ Publika.
Anxious for a taste of this icy bacon delight? Order the Rise & Shine (RM29.50) aka Big Breakfast and enjoy the smokiness, saltiness, fattiness and flavor of bacon ice cream with fluffy pancakes and creamy scrambled eggs.
Never one to settle for the ordinary, Whimsical offers their French toast (Pain perdu RM16.90) with a twist; dipped in chocolate, fried and topped with housemade silky chantilly cream.
The waffles here has a prominent yeasty aroma; which may or may not be a hit. Order one to decide.
Texture-wise it was prefect – nicely browned, crispy edges and soft insides which are not too dense nor overly airy.
Whimsical offers both sweet and savoury waffles and this sweet version plus a scoop of Vanilla Cinnamon gelato is RM21.90+.
For those seeking a more substantial meal, the menu is peppered with hearty pasta, sandwiches, salads and burgers on top of the breakfast items. Never one to say no to burgers, I opted for the Burger Blues which is a beef burger with blue cheese.
This one elicited mixed reviews; for between the 3 of us we were undecided if it’s a hit or miss. The patty is tasty and juicy enough but I had thought it was a tad spicy. Jo thinks that the caramelized onions are too sweet and while I’m inclined to agree, I thought it went well with the pungent blue cheese and slightly spicy patty.
Anyhow all feedback are welcomed (in fact you get 30% off the bill if you take the initiative to provide yours!) so the team here is certainly hard at work on tweaking the recipes to suit the majority.
The latest alcoholic ice creams from Cielo are now available here.
We tried the Sangria, Rum & Raisin and Baileys and Chocolate (RM10.90+ per scoop) and the Sangria proved to be the crowd pleaser; think icy, sweet red wine sorbet and you’ll get the drift.
Both the Baileys and Rum & Raisin are pleasant enough though we would personally prefer a stronger alcoholic flavour to them.
Accompanying our meal were the Americano, Latte and Whimsical Tea. Sadly I didn’t get a decent shot as the owners had drank them by nearly half by the time I arrived.
We were told the blend here is a specialty blend created together with Artisan Roastery.
