Tai Thong’s mooncakes has been pretty consistent year after year.
Last year I truly enjoyed the innovative flavours of Teh Tarik Delight, Pineapple Sesame Crunch, Black Forest Highland, Emperor’s Dream, Limau Manis, Tropical Trio and Emerald Ferringhi.
The durian mooncakes was impressive too.
As thus this year I was excited to see the unveiling of their latest flavours. The newest flavors concocted for this year were the Dragon Fruit and Coconut Single Yolk, Honey Grapefruit and Mixed Nuts and Snow Skin Honey Lemon Grapefruit, much lesser in quantity compared to last year but not lesser in quality.
Dragon Fruit and Coconut Single Yolk:
This is my favourite!
A novel blend of dragon fruit and aromatic grated coconut with salted egg yolk, this creation produces a fruity sensation in the mouth yet when eaten together with the savoury yolk it became delicately fruity yet simultaneously rich and salty. The grated coconut also provides a nice crunchy texture.
Superb! 🙂
Honey Grapefruit and Mixed Nuts:
This is a refreshing honey grapefruit paste that’s paired with a heart of dried fruits, winter melon, almonds and sesame seeds. The result is a mildly sourish sweet paste with added crunch from its centre of nuts.
Don’t worry about the word “honey” as it didn’t add much sweetness to the paste but instead offset the bold sourness of the grapefruit.
Snow Skin Honey Lemon Grapefruit:
The alternating honey grapefruit and honey lemon paste proves to be another refreshing combo and ideal for light snacking. The snowskin is soft and it complements the overall mooncake.
In addition to the 3 new flavors above, Tai Thong introduces 2 new edition to it’s Durian Mooncake range; the D24 and the Red Prawn made from 100% premium grade Durians.
Both are available in snowskin version and has their own distinct taste and texture. This range is named as the Premium Durian Duet.
Premium Durian Duet Red Prawn (yellow skin), Premium Durian Duet D24 (white snowskin) – using fresh and fragrant durian pulp from each variety, the specialists at Tai Thong turned the flesh into a creamy clotty pulp and encased them with delicate snowskin. Eaten cold, these thick, custardly, bold mooncakes are an incredibly satisfying dessert! 🙂
The Premium Durian Duet is available only in a box set which contains 2 of each that are priced at a total of RM88 and is limited edition.
Lastly the highly successful Imperial Musang King Royale Mooncake (light yellow snowskin) which was launched last year is also available this year as well.
The Musang King remains my favourite out of all 3.
For the traditional baked ones, I love the Pandan Lotus with Single Yolk since it met all the prerequisite criteria of fragrant, smooth and non-greasy.
This year I personally experienced making snowskin mooncakes with one of the mooncake maestro from Tai Thong.
The art of making of the paste and the baking of the baked mooncakes takes more skills than just stuffing a ready made paste into ready made snowskin (which was precisely what I did) so I’m NOT quite qualified as a mooncake maker yet, but it did got me hooked on the ideal of making my own mooncakes now! So, any mooncake making classes to recommend? Or recipes? 🙂
My Snowskin Pure Lotus! Delicious! 🙂
