I have said many times that I loved most of the cakes from Swich Cafe and here’s another of my review in continuous support of their creations. I made another visit soon after the debut of the mangosteen cake (review HERE) for her Avocado Cake and as expected, I wasn’t able to resist the other cakes on display and ended up with an additional Apple and Banana Cake.
Owner Cheng is one of the most creative baker I know and she is tirelessly conceiving new creations almost every week. As of now, she had added Jackfruit Cake, Ciku Yoghurt Cake with Roasted Cashews, Coconut Cashew Cake, durian ice cream and a Durian Ice Cream Pavlova to Swich Cafe menu.
I have been meaning to drop in for her cakes for weeks, but a few untoward incidents had left me in despair for a while and I had temporarily lost my mojo for food hunting. Nevertheless, my cakes obsession had resurfaced recently so I hope to visit Swich latest outlet at Publika Red Bridge soon to sample her new cakes! 🙂
This batch I bought was some time ago when they were still operating from a kiosk. The below is the Carrot Cake that I have blogged about HERE.
Another signature of Swich is this luscious Burnt Sugar Cake that is surprisingly, not saccharinely sweet although the name has the word “sugar” in it. I do recommend giving this cake a shot. It is marvelously rich but the frosting has superb balance of smoky burnt taste and caramelized aroma. The almond brittle is addictive too! You can read my detailed review HERE.
While waiting for my Avocado Cake to be packed, I was tempted with this Walnut Butterscotch Cake but decided on the Apple Cake instead as it looked less sinful. LOL.
It turned out to be a marvelous choice as I really enjoyed the Apple Cake. I loved the generous amount of fresh apple chunks embedded within its crumb and its non-greasy texture.
I polished off a whole slice without much difficulty. Other than the top glaze, the cake is light and low in sugar.
Next is the Avocado Cake I came for.
Just like the Mangosteen Cake, it won’t be wowing anyone with its looks, but hopefully with its taste. It came paired with chopped pistachios and caramel.
Cheng has successfully bought forth the mild flavours of the avocado in both the soft, moist sponge and the avocado cream. My guess of the reason why Cheng chose pistachio (among other nuts) to pair it with the cake would be because both pistachios and avocados share similar taste profile or mouthfeel; which is a bit “green” and buttery.
An Avocado Cake may sound weird to many, but I can assure you that you’ll love Swich’s Avocado Cake even if you’re not a fan of avocados. Hey, I know I sound like a super fangirl here, but really, I do think that Cheng has nailed the best flavours for all her cakes so far! 🙂
I have a weakness for fruit-based cakes (banana, apple, orange, berries, plums etc) that has actual chunks of fruits in them. Just like how the earlier Apple Cake caught my interest, this Banana Cake with real banana bits got me hooked.
While I love bananas, I’m not a fan of banana cakes as they are usually rather greasy with black bits in the crumb. The recipe usually calls for overripe bananas and the fruit is blended into the batter. I would prefer to be able to see actual fruits in my cake, which was what had me hooked on to this Banana Cake by Swich.
It is non-greasy and there were fresh pieces of banana nested within the crumb. As you can see for yourself here, the bananas are still bright yellow. When I took a bite, I could taste bananas in the batter, as well as fresh, sweet bananas too!
Cheng threw this a “toasted” pandan cake which I think it’s one of her experiments. Or was it something else? Frankly I can’t remember but I did finish every crumb. :DD
Whew.. 3 posts so far just on Swich’s cakes! And another one to come once I sampled her new creations! Hopefully it won’t take me as long to publish it as this one did. I blame the 15 yee sang and CNY dinner reviews for the delay! LOL!
