MOONCAKES 2016: Celestial Court Sheraton Imperial KL

On Monday I walked into Sheraton Imperial for a meeting and the mooncake display in front of Toastina had me grinded to a halt and did a double take.

“Wait a minute, since when Sheraton Imperial offers mooncakes?”

As far as I know (and I consider myself very updated on hotels’ mooncakes) Sheraton Imperial is one of the few hotels that doesn’t offer mooncakes.
At least not for the past 10 years or so.

I’ve thought it was an unfortunate thing, for Celestial Court is one of the finest pork-free Chinese restaurant in the Klang Valley and their dim sum is exquisite.
I am sure the Chinese kitchen team is more than capable of making good mooncakes.

And what do you know, this year, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel’s Celestial Court has prepared to launch 8 different home-made mooncakes to mark the festival!

All mooncakes are HANDMADE in the Chinese kitchen by dim sum Chef Ken and his team. That meant no mass produced commercial paste and high quality control for every mooncake made as the kitchen has full control of the production.

The elegant and vibrant red box is also one of the prettiest that I’ve seen this year for mooncake packaging too!

The highlight of the snowskin range is the Premium Musang King Durian, 70 g each and priced at RM25.

Now, as expected, everyone considering to buy this would ask; is it worth the price?

Well, take a look at this video and judge for yourself.

Personally I love the supple snowskin which is unlike the common “doughy” snowskin.
This skin is stretchy and chewy like mochi so if you love the bite of the mochi skin, you will enjoy this.

As for the rich durian filling, it is not entirely fresh durian pulp but the rich aroma of the King of Fruits is unmistakable.
The gold dusting on top added a touch of luxury to the decadent mooncake and makes it very gift-worthy.

The other snowskin mooncakes variants were no less interesting.

Another one that caught my attention was the Teh Tarik Flavoured Yam Paste with Macadamia Nuts.
2 others were the Salted Caramel Golden Custard and Azuki Bean, Strawberry White Lotus Paste with Chocolate Berries Truffle so there are a total of 4 snowskin mooncakes by Celestial Court.

Each of these snowskin variant weights 70 grams.

One of the baked variants that I’ve tried was the Low-Sugar Osmanthus Wolfberry White Lotus and Black Sesame with Melon Seed.
True to its name, it was boast of a lower than usual sweetness level and the paste less oily as well.
In fact, in keeping with recent consumer demands, all Celestial Court mooncakes are lower in sugar and grease. However, the chefs are careful to keep a good balance of the ratio of oil and sugar as too low an amount would affect the taste and flavour of the mooncakes.

The flavours of osmanthus was subdued as the white lotus had a stronger flavour.
Nonetheless, take your time and savour each bite and you will find the delicate fruity-floral osmanthus flavour coming through.
Specks of wolfberries (not whole) were embedded in the paste giving it a
