Last year Lai Ching Yuen’s baked mooncakes special flavours were the Ying Yang Paste and Creamy Milk Tea Paste.
This year special flavours are Green Tea Pure Lotus Paste and the Tiramisu Pure Lotus Paste.
The standard lotus paste and assorted fruit nuts remained and just like past years, snowskin mooncakes hasn’t made any appearance frm Chef Thye’s kitchen.
The box is familiar too, elegant, heavy and solid with magnetic covers.
As I’ve said last year, the basic lotus is good.
The paste isn’t overly sweet nor greasy. The assorted nut on the other hand possesses a strong smell and a sticky texture which doesn’t agree with me, presumably from the candied winter melon.
The 2 new flavours were quite nice.
The coffee flavour was prominent from the first bite on the Tiramisu version. This is a safe combination of aromatic coffee and smooth lotus paste which would please those looking for some familiar, but would like a bit of diversification from the ordinary.
The Green Tea Pure Lotus Paste was similarly balanced in flavour; the green tea flavour discernible, but with lotus flavour coming forth distinctive as the aftertaste.
