Kuih Culture Penang: Fantastic and air-conditioned space for chendul, traditional kuih and local Penang favourites

My friends Jason and Gill recently embarked on one of their biggest life changing projects – going full force to establish a Penang Nyonya culinary, cultural and educative hub in an effort to keep Penang traditions and heritage alive for the future generations.

Kuih Culture comprises of a hot kitchen dedicated to the making of the freshest traditional kuih as well as local favourites such as Nyonya Nasi Lemak and Laksa. In the same building the upper floor is converted into a 3 in 1 Experience Centre. Besides taking fun photos with the 3D murals, this space includes a viewing lounge for videos/conferences and a dedicated room for kuih making classes.

One of the main component of the business is their catering services. Kuih Culture is certified halal and caters for private events, parties, corporate functions and  celebrations. They offer special themed kuih platters (full moon, prayer sets, All Souls’ Day) and savoury Malaysian favourites such as laksa and nasi lemak.

I make it a point to visit and meet my friends here whenever I’m in Penang. Their kuih is exactly how I like my kuih – the angkoo fat with moist (but not wet/sticky!) mungbean, the bingka ubi moist and loaded with tapioca (not just flour) and the 9 layer kuih colored just right and peels easily.
I try to grab the white and purple bingka whenever it is available too, for I love them. White and purple bingka are elusive in KL!

Below: The white bingka; another favourite of mine!

Visit 1:
Nasi Lemak (RM18.90), Chendul (RM6.50), Kuih (RM1 – RM1.50/ piece), Nasi Ulam (sadly discontinued).

Visit 2: More kuih (RM1 – RM1.50/ piece)!

And my favourite ang koo!

The mungbean filling is just right – moist, soft, not too sticky or wet.

Visit 3:
Nasi Lemak Curry Chicken 2 pieces (RM16.90), Chendul (RM6.50). The chendul is even better now with finer ice and small house-cooked red beans.

Since January 2019 I’ve revisited regularly with friends and I felt that the food had improved in both taste and selections. Their Hainanese chicken chop, sambal chicken chop, pohpiah in laksa soup and chicken curry are much enhanced since December 2018.  The Nyonya Nasi Lemak has been consistent. You can upgrade your chendul to a durian chendul now.

The Kuih Culture team will be launching some new dishes such as Penang Curry Mee, Hokkien Mee and an Instagrammable Kuih Tower so watch out and keep yourself updated for their announcements on their FB page! I personally can’t wait to try the curry mee as I’m a huge fan of Penang Curry Mee.
