I don’t change my hairstyle much. Most of the time it turned out disastrous so I had given up being adventurous after a few ugly incidents.
Besides my hair is pretty healthy and grows out quite nicely with natural waves at the tips. All in all, pretty acceptable and thus the lack of urgency on my end to shake things up.
Today as I sat in the salon seat in Centro Hair Salon on the swanky 4th floor of the Gardens, I realized how bored I am of my hair.
On one hand I love the endless possibilities of having long hair; so many styles and hairdo to recreate – braids, bun, etc and so easy to hide a bad hair day – just sweep all up in a ponytail and I’m good to go.
On the other hand I realized that I look the same all the time. Besides, all my plans of braiding, doing dreadlocks and fancy-dos never materialized anyways.
And thus I told Kevin; I want something different (now why do I have a feeling that he hears this line all the time? Hahhahah!), and I want to look gorgeous, vogue and be noticed.
Kevin is a man of few words; not unfriendly mind you, but a person who prefers to let his work speaks for itself.
And I guess after 235 likes and over 105 comments on FB (with the numbers still climbing as of now), Kevin’s ‘work’ on me did spoke volumes.
Oh and nearly a 100 likes on Instagram (@wackybecky) too! 😀
I like Kevin’s self assurance. He took one look at my head, ran his fingers through my hair and almost immediately gave me his “solution”.
You don’t mind short? he asked.
I shook my head. I don’t, I said.
He then nodded.
Alright, he said. I will cut it short. One shorter than the other. And he went on say that he will give me 3 different color tones but in reds as red would suit me better.
As we discussed, I realized that Kevin is so different from other hairstylists that I know. Well obviously he’s not just a hairstylist, he’s the founder of Centro Hair Salon with decades of experience.
And that’s why it’s worth the time and money to have your cut styled by an experienced and reputable hairstylist/creative director.
You will leave the salon feeling like a million bucks, which was exactly how I felt, and still feeling now! 😀
After 2 decades and numerous disappointing hair “makeovers” I finally felt confident and satisfied with the result. No doubt this will be the start of more adventurous hairstyles to come! 🙂
The whole makeover took about 3.5 hours.
The cut was fast, for Kevin worked adeptly and surely. As he chopped off my hair, I fired some questions at him, which he answered rather assuredly and with the knowledge of an experienced industry leader.
My standard questions to any hairstylists are: should I keep it long, should I cut it short, what colour should I use, should I curl/perm.
All of the ones I had worked with so far had replied with the standard responses of “Can”, “Up to you”, “Can try”.
Only Kevin’s replies were different.
Should I keep it long – “No, you want a drastic change. Go for a short style“.
What colour should I use- “Red. It suits your skin tone better. I’ll recommend the colours. And for textures we shall use 3 different colours for different areas of your hair.”
Can I try ash/blonde/light browns? – “Not recommended, it will not suit you as well as reds. You have pretty yellow skintone.”
Should I curl/perm/have waves – “No, it will make you look old.”
Fuh! I like! Wonderful definite answers.
Isn’t having a hairstylist like him handling your precious locks sounds like a dream? 🙂
After his cut, he gave instructions to his “boys” (staff) on which separate sections to color. He then went on to other clients who are obviously long term customers.
I had time to observe my surroundings since my session took hours.
I noticed that the whole salon is rather orderly. No staff were on their handphones or slouching around. They were attentive, sharp and very polite. All wore neat uniforms that fit them well and if they are not attending to a customer, they stood at attention and watched Kevin work quietly.
My complimentary drink (tea) were checked and refilled regularly. I was asked if I needed more magazines to pass my time.
There are powerpoints at each table and I could charge my laptop and my phone as I worked. There’s even WIFI here!
These 2 boys were wonderful and really friendly. They were helpful and chatty when I inquired about colours, cut, styles. Instinctively, they know when to stay mum and gave me tranquility when I started working on my laptop or while I was on my phone. They worked fast and assuredly as well.
There’s certainly a very high level of professionalism here. I love it.
The colours used are from the Loreal Majirel range. Kevin is also a Loreal Artistic Ambassador.
Here are the 3 different bowls of colors used.
After 30 minutes it was washed off. Then blow dried. Kevin came over a few times to check on things.
Not bad yes? 🙂
There wasn’t a need to re-check or trim after the blow dry. I’m not sure about you guys but every time I had a hair cut, there’s always a need to “touch up” slightly after my hair was washed and blown dried.
Well, perhaps that’s a normal occurrence when it wasn’t a top level, experienced hairstylist handling your hair.
Lastly Kevin proceeded to show me how to style my new cut. A bit of wax, push the hair to one side, which section to part. He assured me it is low maintenance and easy.
Thanks Kevin for everything! I feel reborn-ed now. LOL!
I’m just waiting for the red part to be a little less well, red. I thought it’s rather strong now.
Anyhow I know the colour will wash out over the next few weeks and gradually settle down.
Last but not least; maintenance.
I took home in a nice Loreal COLOUR FOR LIFE, Malaysians Hairdressers for Children with Aids canvas tote some Loreal products.
But first, I must say that is it a lovely, roomy bag! The material is sturdy and the design is simple and colourful. I’ll be using this when I leave for Hong Kong this coming Monday. 🙂
My hair style would need wax. Loads of it. I mean loads of it over the next few months, not at one go. 🙂
And some spray to hold it all together. And of course quality shampoo and conditioner to keep the hairdo in good health and myself looking gorgeous!
Sweet Jessica, Kevin’s sister knows how often I travel and threw in another 2 travel size ones as bonus. Thank you Jessica! 🙂
Red for Rebecca Saw. Yes, totally me. Bold, sassy, vivacious. 😀

Gorgeous Becky. Absolutely vogue. Definitely you.
This definitely looks good on you. Happy to hear you found a good hairdresser that suits you. Love the new look.
Don’t mind me asking – how much did the whole thing cost? Cut, colour… Treatment?
OMG! So absolutely gorgeous! Way to go girl!
Looks much more younger and energetic! But I doubt the new hairstyle is hard to manage 🙁
You are so hot! Always been, but even hotter now! Kevin did a fantastic job. I like how you noted on the professionalism levels of the staff here.
Most salons’ hairstylist are just sloppy sometimes.
You’re looking really good becky. A wardrobe change (just get some edgier pieces) and a touch of make up and you’re good to rock the world.
