When I first visited Awesome Canteen when they opened years back I wasn’t impressed with the food nor the hype surrounding its paleo burger.
But it is the first outlet that markets this as one of its main menu items, resulting in paleo and non-paleo eaters ordering it more out of curiosity than anything else (or so I think).
Reviews of its food was mixed since, but it has undisputedly garnered its legion of fans over the years, as seen from the brand’s expansion to Penang while the Paramount outlet is steadily welcoming customers, both old and new.
They made next door Prologue, its porky sister Japanese restaurant offering bentos and ramen.
So yes, Awesome Canteen has continued being awesome for their fans!
Personally, I’ve not stepped in again until recently when a group of us were in the area seeking coffee after our Chinese dinner.
Coffee, as it turned out, wasn’t bad! Between the 4 of us we shared 3 beverages and a gluten free cake.
We are no coffee connoisseurs, but we drank enough to enjoy a good cuppa and criticise a bad one.
Anyhow I’ll go into more details on the coffee once I head there again with some coffee snobs. 🙂
What I particularly like from that visit was the Paleo Banana Cake.
At RM12.90 it might be considered expensive for some, but as someone who bakes and have been using a lot of coconut and almond flour for my keto/low carb baking exploits, I can assure you it is a fair price, unless you wish to bake it yourself.
Coconut flour isn’t cheap. Neither is dark chocolate. Taste-wise this petite slice had banana undertones, a natural sweetness from the fruit and some dark chocolate to give it a rich, velvety mouthfeel, a good thing since coconut flour bakes cakes does give a slightly gritty texture compared to the usual sponge cakes.
I’m actually curious enough to have a meal here.. or should I head to Prologue? 🙂
