Wine For Asia 2011 – I’m going to Singapore!!

Last year, I was at Vintry’s, Jaya 33 for the Wine For Asia 2010 (post here ) launch. I didn’t know much about this annual event back then. Nor do I know much about wines.
Today, I’m much more well-versed with the wines of the world, having been exposed to many wine pairing dinners and wine events over the course of the year. And this year, I will be attending the Wine For Asia 2011 on Oct 28th and the Wine Fiesta on Oct 29th 2011!

WINE FOR ASIA 2011 – An exciting programme awaits you!

Wine For Asia 2011 is  Asia’s most comprehensive international wine exhibition and it will be held on 27-28 October 2011, followed by its extension, Wine Fiesta @ Wine For Asia 2011 on 29 October 2011.
These events, featuring over 300 participants from 20 countries are poised to attract over 3,000 trade visitors from the region during trade days, and 5,000 visitors for the last day.

The programme are as follows:

Some of the WFA highlights:

• SEA Wine Pioneer Recognition Award Appreciation Lunch – 27 October 2011, 12 – 1pm
Pioneers in the industry helped build the region’s wine industry in the 1970s. This award recognises and honours the contributions from the pioneers.

• Wine Style Asia Award Gala Dinner – 26 October 2011, 7 – 10.30pm
Launched in 2004, the Wine Style Asia Award has gained much recognition. The panel of judges comprise an international and regional mix of influential wine personalities and there is a stringent judging system that ensures only top-quality wines receive the award. This year, the organisers expect 500 entries from overseas wineries, local importers and distributors. The awards will be presented at a high-profile gala dinner at the Conrad Centennial Singapore hotel.

• F&B Industry Forum – 28 October 2011, 2 – 4pm I will be attending this
This forum brings together a panel of eminent industry players to share their experience in the rapid developments seen in the F&B industry in the past five years.

• F&B Familiarisation Tour – 28 October 2011, 7 – 11pm I will be attending this
This tour, which includes stops at popular night spots Clarke Quay and Dempsey Hill, provides participants an insight into the latest F&B concepts in Singapore.

• Wine Master Classes – during WFA 2011 I will be attending this!
Wines from France, Australia, Chile, France, Italy and Spain will be showcased.

• Indulgence Singapore Incentive Programme
Details of a special trade visitor package will also be announced at the roadshow.

Malaysia is set to send a large delegation from its wine and F&B industry to Wine for Asia 2011 (WFA) which will be held at Suntec Singapore from 27 to 28 October 2011.
The ninth edition of the most comprehensive wine exhibition in the region will also feature theparticipation of prominent Malaysian personalities including wine experts like Dato Kok Wee Kiat, Roderick Wong and Huza Radzi, leading members of Malaysia’s wine, hotel and F&B industries.

Malaysian wine consultant Thomas Ling has also been invited to join the judging panel of the WFA’s signature event – the Wine Style Asia Awards (WSAA).
According to Jason Ng, Project Director of Wine For Asia: “As our nearest neighbour, we expect to welcome at estimated 500 Malaysians to attend the two-day show for trade. On the third day, there is the Wine Fiesta which is open to the public.”

Malaysia will feature prominently in the panel of judges for the new South East Asia Wine Pioneer Recognition Award that will be launched at WFA 2011. Dato Kok Wee Kiat, Huza Radzi and Roderick Wong have joined a panel of established and respected wine personalities from the region, to select the first recipient of the award.

Dato Kok Wee Kiat is a famous Malaysian oenophile whose deep knowledge of wines has been recognised by the French who have made him a Chevalier du Tastevin of Burgundy, in the local chapter of La Châine des Rôtisseurs and The International Food and Wine Society.

Roderick Wong has been involved as a wine importer, distributor, retailer, consultant, wine judge and wine educator. Trained by The Courts of Master Sommelier, UK, he holds an Intermediate Certification with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (UK). He is President of the first Sommelier Association of Malaysia (SOMLAY) and he sits in the council of the South East Asia Sommelier Alliance and is also the founder of The Hilton Wine Academy.

Huza Radzi is currently Assistant Director of Food and Beverage of the Westin Kuala Lumpur. He made his mark in the Malaysian F&B industry running several leading fine wine-dining establishments in the city. For example, before he joined Westin, he managed the famous award-winning Lafite Restaurant at the Shangri-la Kuala Lumpur as Maitre d’Hotel. The current Vice President of the Sommelier Association of Malaysia, Huza also had illustrious vocational experience at New York’s Le Cirque and three Michelin star Les Jardin des Sens in Montpellier, France.

Wine Style Asia Awards.

WFA is also well-known for its signature event – the Wine Style Asia Awards (WSAA). This year, Mr Thomas Ling will represent Malaysia on its judging panel for the first time. He is a Certified Sommelier of the Court of Master Sommeliers, UK, in 2006, the first from Malaysia.
He is also the first Malaysian to be accredited the International Burgundy and Bordeaux Educator with the BIVB and CIVB, France, respectively, and is both a Certified Specialist of Wine and Spirits (CSW, CSS) with the Society of Wine Educators, USA. He is also a founding committee member of the Sommelier Association of Malaysia, serving as head of PR Communications and special projects.

He joins an elite panel of judges, comprising established international and regional wine experts to select WSAA’s award-winning wines. Mr Tham, said: “WSAA is unique because it celebrates top quality wines for the Asian palate and market and we are very pleased to have
Thomas on the panel again in 2011.” Thomas is presently a partner in Entwine, a boutique consultancy offering niche business solutions for the food and beverage industry.

The WSAA panel of distinguished wine experts, which includes John Chua, President of Chinelli Consultancy as well as Master of Wine Kym Milne MW, consists of both international and regional judges. The former bring their international judging experience while the latter
represent the expectations of the Asian markets.

WFA 2011 is organised by MP International and Wine Resources.
Spread over 5,000 sqm, it will showcase more than 300 exhibitors from 22 countries and regions, and 12 pavilions, and will represent wines from Italy, France, Australia, Singapore, Chile, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Portugal, New Zealand, Argentina and Spain. It is expected to attract about 4,000 visitors, mostly from Southeast Asia.
