Wimbly Lu Singapore – so I was told they serve the best waffles here…

I can’t quite agree that this can be considered “best waffle” but at the very least it has all the basics of a good waffle right; golden with a crisp exterior, while the core remain soft and light. So if you like your waffle crisp and airy, this is it.

I prefer my waffles with a more toothsome bite and better aroma so this didn’t quite cut it for me. Nevertheless I can see why Wimbly Lu’s waffles has so much love going for it. Though plain on its own, it was nice embellished with scoops of ice cream and thick chocolate sauce or maple syrup.

I wouldn’t travel to Serangoon for the waffle, but the Root Beer Cake (SGD6) is a surprising and unique creation which managed to lessen the disappointment of the waffle for me. Thumbs up for the wedge of moist chocolate fudge cake soaked in root beer topped with ice cream.

I’ll never order anything with the label “butterscotch” in it. The very word screams “SWEET” and as much as I enjoy desserts, I dislike saccharine sweetness. My friend Alan however had a thing going for butterscotch and pounced on this Hazelnut Butterscotch Bar ($4.50+).

Good lord. The base was dry and dense and the butterscotch layer just as hard. It took a considerable amount of strength to even break it apart into bite sizes. Granted there’s plenty of hazelnuts studding the top, but it was still too ridiculously sweet and hard as rock to recommend.

It’s unlikely that I’ll ever return. Well, maybe if my Singaporean friends are kind enough to foot the bill and even provide transportation then you might see me stepping in here again. Admittedly there are many other desserts that I haven’t tried, but nothing else I saw here was outstanding enough to warrant a revisit.
Besides, I’m pretty sure there are better cafes in more accessible areas of Singapore.

Wimbly Lu is known for their housemade chocolates. There samples for you to try so don’t be shy. I was too full to sample any.

The menu. Prices are reasonably lower than most cafes in town, or so I was informed by my Singaporean counterparts.

However, Wimbly Lu’s charming and kitschy retrovintage decor does have a lot going for it. It’s irrefutably cheery with sunny disposition that perks up the mood and makes one feel relaxed instantly.
Small details like hanging lights, origami pieces, knick-knacks and mismatched ornaments adds to the carefree vibe. The exposed brickwall is incredibly photogenic too.

Many described the place as “cosy” of which I beg to differ. It is designed to exude the cosy vibe yes, but it’s FAR from cosy. The tables are crammed too close for comfort, the noise level high and the space is tiny.
The queue is long and there’s no way you can relax and chill with constant stares of the waiting patrons (unless you have no conscience of course). So if you’re seeking for a quiet and “cosy” place where you can converse and enjoy your time sipping your cuppa, Wimbly Lu isn’t the place.

    Hi,
Frankly, I find this plcae a lot better than some of the other places you have given postive comments to on your blog.
I wonder if you have given any bad comments to outlets that have paid you or for your meal and expected you to post them in your blog.
I am just curious about the biaseness on your comments.

      Other places like where?
Besides, that’s MY opinion isn’t it?
Paid meals – hardly ever. If it’s PAID, there will be a footnote at the end of the post.
Reviews – Yes. I do reviews. And I’ll say what I think too. These are labeled “reviews” on my posts.

It’s fine that we don’t agree, but bad comments?
Exactly where? I won’t return, but I did fairly said “I prefer my waffles with a more toothsome bite and better aroma so this didn’t quite cut it for me. Nevertheless I can see why Wimbly Lu’s waffles has so much love going for it. Though plain on its own, it was nice embellished with scoops of ice cream and thick chocolate sauce or maple syrup.”

    Hi again,
Just want to state that I have enjoyed some of your other postings on this blog thus far. However, I find the comment on ‘unless your friend foot the bill and provide transportation’ comment a little harsh.

Next one to try is Stranger’s Reunion!

  6. Amber

I haven’t tried any of the cafes in Singapore. Make another guide on that Becky!

  7. Caroline

DOC (Department of Coffee) is good . Go try it!

  8. Caroline

    Ooops!
Department of Caffeine (D.O.C.) is at 15 Duxton Road, Singapore.

I believe the ones you like are the dense bready ones with a heady aroma of butter (butter incorporated into the batter). Those are heavier and denser.

Good question! I wonder too where are the best waffles – I’m not a fan but I won’t mind one every now and then!
