The Haute Food Co, Plaza Damas

My 1st visit didn’t got off to a very good start as we got lost though I followed the map on the website to the T.
So take my advice; forget the map.

A foolproof way would be to park in Hartamas Shopping Centre & to go to the 2nd floor where Starbucks is. Exit through the glass doors & you will see Aji Don Ramen. Proceed to the row behind it and turn right. Walk til the middle of the row, keeping a lookout for 2 big blue and white stripes umbrellas (which is quite obscure as well) on the opposite side. It is somewhere in the middle of the row.

Not familiar with HSC/Plaza Damas, we walked up & down the row a few times on our first visit. I would have hopped into other outlets (there’s quite a selection of eateries here) but the need to verify the claims of “best scones in Malaysia” and “superb sandwiches” had me obstinately thrudging up and down looking for The Haute Food Co.

Boy, was I glad when I finally spotted the entrance.

Once a foot was in the door, my eyes were riveted at the selection of baked goods at the counter. Oh my gawd..it’s desserts heaven here! And everything looked scrumptious..with each sporting the ‘carelessly” assembled together, individually home-baked goodness look.

I propelled forward, zoomed in on the scones and started drooling over the cakes.

See? Nonchalantly shaped cookies, devil- may- care rolled croissants and randomly cut scones. Lovely!

The scones, baked fresh daily, came with strawberry jam with REAL strawberries (not the paste-y kind mind you) which was a bit sweet but the fresh whip cream was heavenly.

Warm and buttery..crumbly yet firm, the scone is really worth the trip alone. (I’m not sure about the “best in Malaysia part”, I have to eat more scones before laying claim to that  ). It is reasonably RM4.90 for a set of 2.

Their pasta of the day (which rotates every few days) then was the beef lasagne, RM15.90. All of the mains comes with a side salad, lightly drizzled with vinagrette or just served fresh.
I find the pasta very homely & the sauce fresh with all the right flavours. I did feedback that I find the pasta sheets a weee bit “elastical” but maybe that was considered al dente?

Nope, don’t expect symmetrically cut lasagne. This resembles a dollop of pasta scooped from a bigger tray and heaped on a plate. I love it! It seems so “homely” .. if you get what I mean. 😉

My chicken Frittata (RM15.90) was delicious! The potatoes at the bottom were firm (I would personally have preferred them softer) and the chicken + pesto + tomatoes combo really did me in. But but..if only the potatoes were softer…hhmm..

Their iced latte RM7.90 wasn’t memorable.. I find it a bit ‘thin’ and lacked ‘kick’.

The day after, I dragged UnkaLeong here. Chef Li (owner/baker/cook) recommended her freshly out of the oven Italian Apple Cake. While I’m not sure how an actual Italian apple cake is supposed to be; I like this one because it does not have the gooey filling of an American apple pie. Seriously, I prefer my apples not reduced into a soggy sticky messl. Here, each apple slice is firm but soft with it’s tartness intact, & the whole slice was chockfull of semi sweet raisins and nuts.

Yes, it is a cake. No pastry or phyllo crust. Only a thin layer of butter sponge on top. Amazing stuff! (RM7 or 8, sorry lost the receipt)

Greedy me packed home a slice of moist and not overly sweet carrot cake (RM7-8?)  for the week. (Ok, who am I kidding? I eat an average of 3 cakes per week  )

The texture somewhat had me comparing it to a fruit cake cos of it’s densely packed structure but minus the over- the – top sweetness. As usual, there were walnuts, julliened carrots and raisins. The cream cheese topping was tinged with lemon that lends a sourish tang. It may not be the best ( I think Collins Bakery in Mt Kiara does a better one), but it’s still better than Dome’s, Delicious’s and Alexis’s version!

Oh yes, of course we did have REAL food. 😉

My roast beef sandwich, (RM13.50) came with succulent thick medium rare beef slices and generous layers of caramelized onions.

UnkaLeong has the Lamb Wrap, RM15.90. The pita has a perfect chewy-crispy balance and the heaving stuffing of roasted lamb was sublime. Pour in the mint yogurt dip that came with it and you have the perfect lamb pita.

Look at the bountiful fillings!

I can’t wait to stock up on their desserts! The menu is pretty limited for now & I ‘m aiming for their American breakfast next.  Based on what we had so far, it seemed that they have a good deli supplier. I trust that their breakfast items will impress (I hope).

A very small quaint little cafe.

I’m a careful person with money (call me a scrooge if you will) . Yet I felt that the prices were reasonable considering the portion and quality of food. At least it wasn’t as bad as what we paid for our cut throat Bar Italia breakfast .

However a huge disappointement if youre looking for European stuff…

    1. rebeccasaw

Err. . did I say French anywhere? Perhaps fr that particular dessert alone, but this cafe is certainly not french-y
