The Famous Geylang Lor 9 Frog Porridge, now in SS2, PJ!

The famous Geylang Lor 9 frog porridge is here in Malaysia, right at Jalan SS2/61 in PJ!

The small shoplot is located in the same row as Red Island cafe. Space-wise, it isn’t very big, with probably 15 tables and could seat 40 people comfortably at any one time.  The interior is very clean, with an open kitchen where you could view your pots of porridge being prep up. Sadly though, there wasn’t any frog chopping action  😉

I haven’t been to the one in Singapore so I do not have any basis of comparison. However, I certainly didn’t expect the menu to be so simple!

You can have your frogs prepared 3 ways; with Spring Onions, Dry Chilli or cooked in your porridge.

Then add to your order, sides such as vegetables, tofu or even chicken if you wish. But FROGS are the main thing here, obviously.

I added an order of Fried HongKong cabbage, (though I seriously wondered if it’s any different from the normal “kailan”) (RM12).

HK cabbage

Anyhow, it was surprisingly VERY good! Sweet & crunchy & cooked to the right degree, the vegetables was lightly tossed with some soy and oil. The top pile is deep fried leaves, and the bottom are the blanched ones; with both leaves and stalks. Non – fibrious & extremely pleasant to eat!

Service was pretty fast, we got our orders approximately 10mins after & every dish came freshly prepared. Our order of a SMALL pot (RM12) of porridge could easily feed 2.

There is DEFINITELY 1 WHOLE medium sized frog in our pot. Legs, breast, back, ass, front legs..check check check. All accounted for!

Even the drinks and condiments on the tables were of quality. (Singaporean owned perhaps? 😉 ) For example the sesame oil was fragrant and thick. Our herbal tea tasted freshly brewed & wasn’t watered down horribly. Certainly can’t complain for the price at RM1.60.

Geylang

Though I’m not a fan of porridge, I wouldn’t mind going there again. This place gets packed pretty quick too. We were there for dinner at 630+ and by 730pm almost all tables were taken up & most were families.

Um, I love you, Becky, but I’m not gonna eat frogs with you. Haha! Actually, I’ve tried fried frog legs before…and they weren’t too bad,but not willing to pay for that!

Hey, I don’t think there’s SO much difference between Singaporean and Malaysian food…they seem to have mostly everything that Singapore has!

Ah… Jenn would love this place 🙂
I think that I know where this place is! I think that the HK Kailan is bigger and sweeter compared to our local counterpart. But avoid this if you can.. extensive pesticide has to be used with this kailan

Oh this is a branch? Heard so much of Geylang’s frog porridge, and there’s one in Penang, if I’m not mistaken.

But maybe not the same branch.

Had the worst Mother’s day dinner ever!

As for my mum condition, she only can take porridge so I decided to bring her here for Mother’s day dinner.

Reached and sat down and waited for 15 mins for the waitress to clean the table and leave us with menu. Saw a woman who had dinner there walked to the kitchen- glass counter and shout at them – rice and vege dishes on table more than 20 mins and other food not out yet.

Ordered 1 plate of tofu, 1 plate of mix chicken chop, 1 plate of kailan and 1 pot of frog porridge for 1 pax from an unfriendly waitress, waited for 15 mins the frog porridge arrived following by other dishes after every 5 – 10 mins. All the dishes are on table and waited 20 mins for 2 plate of rice! Even they served us the wrong chiecken chop which is to be mix chicken chop- 2 flavor lemon and thai chilly instead of lemon flavour only! DOnt bother much on this issue.

Informed waitress and they served 2 plate of rice with their sour face. Mum dont eat much(hardly eat) thus, we asked the balance (more than half pot with plenty of pieces of frog) of the frog porridge to be pack to take away.

Asked for bill after 10 mins and ask where is the pack food..being informed by the kitchen boy already thrown away and only a word of “sorry” by the waitress without any optional choice given to us. We are not being calculative of the remaining of the food but at least give an optional choice like pack half of the frog porridge to customer as customer no need to pay extra buying another food for someone to have it at home later.

Due to its a Mother’s day we dont want to argue much and just walked off but I will surely wont come here again.

OMG. geez Tom, that was horrible!
I would have started a scene, and i admire your hold on your temper. Sounds like they just cant be bothered with customer service, if they even understand that in the 1st place!
