The Club Hotel @ Ann Siang Singapore – REVIEW

My monthly excursions to Singapore are usually about food, food, and more food.

I do however, make attempts to catch up with both Malaysian and Singaporean friends whenever I’m in town, and it is all for the better if I could convince them to join me at some restaurants/cafes to stuff themselves silly with me.

That, and a bit of shopping, cultural exploration and a few 10km runs in between pretty much sums up my monthly Singapore “breaks“.

A recent opportunity to rejuvenate myself in the revived unique F&B-focused hospitality and lifestyle haven of The Club on Ann Siang Road turned out to be a one of my better Singapore trips.

Over 3 days and 2 nights I was ensconced within this pretty, refurbished 1900’s heritage building which in turn housed a hotel with 20 luxurious rooms with 4 (four) F & B outlets offering different concepts.

I soon discovered that The Club provides all the perks of a hotel in a more than decent space (read: spacious) with excellent restaurants within the same building, located in one of the hippest area in Singapore.

If I were to summarise the top reasons for lodging at The Club, it would be (in no particular order):

    1. Location – 3 MRT stations are just a few turns away; Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar. Whichever corner of the island that you may wish to visit, you can get there. Likewise for taxi service. Very few cabbies would be ignorant of Club St, Ann Siang Road or Maxwell Food Court.
    1. Lifestyle – a glut of cafes and bars allows you to chill from morning until dawn.
In need of a sugar rush or a caffeine kick? There are PS Cafe, Mad About Sucre, Free Robot Cafe, etc within walking distance.
Bars and speakeasy(s) more your thing? You’re at the perfect neighborhood! The vicinity of Cross Street, Ann Siang Road, Tanjong Pagar and the Telok Ayer area are hot addresses for some of the best spots for a tipple.
      My suggestion?

Start with the outlets within The Club itself.

Devour a hearty lunch at Mr and Mrs Maxwell and order the Crepe Suzette (yes, with copious amount of Grand Marnier) with a cuppa for tea.
Follow up with a cocktail at Tiger’s Milk just before tucking into a scrumptious dinner at The Disgruntled Chef.
Head up to the dungeon for late night whisky appreciation sessions (hint: Scottish single malts) at B28 before hitting the sheets of your British Royal Warrant King bed.
Rise by 10am for a complimentary continental/American breakfast at Mr and Mrs Maxwell.

All of these are just 1-2 floors away from the comfort of your ROOM!

    1. Food – you would feel spoiled for choice considering the number of cafes and food outlets within strolling distance which suit all budgets and diets. Nothing beats a 1 minute stroll to the 24 hours Maxwell Food Court which offers a plethora of cuisine from hawker delights to salads to piping hot snacks of banana fritters to refreshing taufufa (soy beancurd) and freshly squeezed sugarcane juice.

A longer walk takes you to Telok Ayer Food Court, also popular for hawker delicacies. Otherwise take your pick from British grub to pizzas to Thai cuisine to steaks; for the food outlets within a kilometre radius of The Club offers an eclectic choice for the tummy!

BELOW: Chicken rice at Maxwell’s – look for Ah Tai, right beside the famous Tian Tian.

    1. Facilities – honestly how many of us actually use the hotel swimming pool during a hotel stay?
If there is a need to move that body, I’ll suggest planks, lunges, push-ups in the room. For cardio, head towards the Singapore River and run along it until you reach Fort Canning Park.
This gorgeous park is well lit by 7am and you can enjoy the scenery as well as the clean and well-maintained running tracks.

How I spent one morning: 10 km to Fort Canning Park plus 2 rounds inside then back to The Club for breakfast!

Another morning I did a combination of yoga, skipping, planks, push-ups and lunges!

    1. Space – have you stayed in some of the boutique hotels in Singapore?
I’ve stayed at some and those similarly priced aren’t half as spacious!
The Club Room is 28 sq m while the Cub Suite offers a balcony plus a living room with sofa bed.

  1. Service and comforts of the hotel itself – A sassy welcome drink called Sunset cools you down while your luggage is taken upstairs.
Once you’re ready, head up and check-in at the comfort of your room.
The housekeeping staff are helpful when I requested for some items for my room while the staff at the front desk and Mr and Mrs Maxwell are always with a warm smiles.

Here’s a video to show you the layout of my Club Room.

And here are the rest of the pictures.

The Club Room is essentially a 28 sq m sunny, serene space with an adjoining bathroom.
Guests are pampered with Organic Bamford bathroom amenities which includes shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion, 2 sets of toothbrush and toothpaste as well as a face soap.
Hotels that provide 3 different towels get brownie points from me and here at The Club, they have got it covered – face towel, hand towel and bath towels. There is also a mat for the floor.
Water pressure is good though the bathroom did have a bit of drainage issue.

Other in-room perks include a dedicated Nespresso machine, tea bags, a mini bar, kettle and 2 bottles of complimentary water.

There is a full length mirror for you to admire yourself while you dress, or well, in my case, to admire my abs and to check on my planking posture.

The other pieces of furniture are thoughtfully placed and provided to create a idyllic space for guests to unwind.
I would leave all my gadgets to charge on the work table but enjoy my coffee and work at the round table with the sofa chairs.
The long bench was for me to place my daily outfits (other than for my morning planks and push ups) while my luggage has a permanent spot on the luggage rack.
The nicely carpeted room feels nice and soft at my feet. Inside the wardrobe there are two bathrobe, slippers, hair dryer and a safe as well as a laundry bag.
Laundry service is available.

The Club Ann Siang Road - my stay in the Club Room (REVIEW)-004

We do not have much use for the TV though we appreciate having one in all our hotel rooms.
Meanwhile the bed deserves a special mention.

This is a British Royal Warrant King bed and I have to say this bed gave me one of my most comfortable sleep in a long while
I travel often and stayed at many hotels and one of the more memorable beds was the Westin Heavenly Bed was good. This however, surpassed that.

There is a difference between firm support and firm feel. What this bed gave was a firm support with a comfortable feel which suits me well as I’m prone to aches and soreness from long walks and frequent exercises.
I like that the pillows were not overly soft too.

      I love such hotels! 😀
The decor and feel is somewhat exclusive and I would say not as “predictable” hotel look/smell/layout!
