Contrary to what some may think, leaving my job wasn’t an easy decision. I wasn’t exactly rejoicing in triumph. I left with a heavy heart.
But I walked out knowing I have done my best, and accepted that there are times when one has to admit defeat & this is one of them. Some things are just not within my field or control to change.

Anyhow, when things gets low, desserts are the way to go. (Eh, it rhythms!! )
I have heard of how Empire Shopping Gallery has become THE place for desserts, which is true, considering the amount of eateries here that specialised in sweets & pretty pastries.

This time round I decided to check out The Vanilla Place.

Macarons are the craze these days & The Vanilla Place offers the options of cute, pocket -friendly one at a mere RM1.50.

Or for a better – sized bite, the RM2.50 ones are value for money.

Even the big ones like these are priced at only RM4.50!

Tastewise? Well, I’m not a fan of macarons but my friend said it was alright. It looked the part though; the skirtings at the side, smooth domed top & ruffled circumference.

I was more interested in the actual cakes, and my Carrot Cake, RM8.80+ was a nice-sized portion for the price. There was plenty of carrots & walnuts, with a hint of cinnamon (but not much to the point it was overpowering) & moist enough to recommend.

Another comfort food that works for me is milkshakes, and my Strawberry milkshake (RM9.80+) was light & frothy, in contrast with the usual thick & creamy ones we get here, but I’m not complaining, as I do like mine not too cloyingly rich. The other milkshake – the Passionfruit, however received less than stellar reviews from its owner, who said it tasted “weird” to him; whatever that means. In the first place, I thought passionfruit & milk wasn’t a good match anyways.

It’s good to have happy-go-lucky friends, such as this one who ordered the Pavlova, (RM8.80+). He was kept amused with our stories & misadventures with a certain individual, & threw in a bit of his well-meaning but useless advice every now & then.
Men, one should never rely on them for comforting words or emotional support.

Thankfully his choice of dessert was much better than his words of advice, for this Pav was delightful enough; light, non-overly saccharine sweet meringue with lovely fresh cream.

Another female friend gorged on Coffee Cheesecake (RM8.80+), another passable cake here. The texture wasn’t too dense (unlike someone we were gossiping about) & the faint flavour of coffee came from the coffee infused sponge embedded within the cake.

Emotions were slightly elevated after some desserts, and we walked away pleased enough; having had a good session of friendship & laughter.

Conclusion:
Desserts were overall good. Prices are definitely reasonable. I would be back for their savoury mains.

The yogurt craze has hit town.
Who/which brand has pioneered it is debatable (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? ) & which is the best is remains an open contest (Tutti Fruitti? Kindori? Snogurt- SS15? Spoon at MV?), but seeing the wave of obsession that hit cupcakes, macarons & doughnuts, I’m pretty certain yogurt could take off in popularity just as those desserts had.

And just last weekend, I discovered another yogurt kiosk while I was Plaza Damas for desserts at the Haute Food Company. Yup, Li bakes wonderful desserts -(review HERE & HERE) & that is about all the reasons I have to head to Plaza Damas.

However, with MOO COW yogurt kiosk on the 2nd floor of Hartamas Shopping Centre, I might come here even more regularly than before! ;-)

Passing by, I was handed a small sample of Moo Cow’s “Original” yogurt to sample. Stuffed as I was, I couldn’t resist ;-).

Verdict? It was really good! Somewhat creamier & less tart than it’s competitors, Moo Cow’s yogurt are fuller in body & not as “icy” or “sorbet – like“.

Meet Clifford – the guy behind Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt. He aims to open at least another 10 outlets this 2011 alone.

Clifford explained that Moo Cow’s yogurt USP (unique selling point) lies in the fact that they use live ABT culture & absolutely no powder mix, unlike its competitors. The final product is a mix of yogurt, milk & certain ‘stabilisers”. The culture used is actually a product from his own fermentation. Sugar is used very conservatively in Moo Cow’s yogurt, which currently has only 2 flavours – Original (a bit of cane sugar) & Mango (no sugar added at all).

Why 2 flavours? Well, Clifford is currently experimenting with some other fruits, but is keeping the QC (quality control) by launching only 2. Other flavours will be added gradually, and only when they have met his expectations.
Hey, as a fussy foodie myself, I can’t argue with such philosophy. ;-)

Prices are very reasonable even by my scrooge standards. LOL.

The portions are pretty big as you can see from the cups we ordered. Much better than another outlet where one pull of the lever from the yogurt dispenser sets you back almost RM10 or more. Ahem..

Below: Additional toppings for RM1.00 only with a whole gamut of choices too.

I love the colours & set up at Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt’s kiosk. Come to think of it, it is almost like a cafe actually, with comfortable tables & chairs for patrons to rest their feet & enjoy some local, freshly made yogurt while they idly read, or just people watch. Perfect for those in need of “me time” . ;-)

My first 2 visits to the Haute Food Company (review HERE ) had me hooked on their simple but luscious desserts.
Hence it’s not surprising that this little quaint cafe has since become one of my top choices for my desserts fix, especially on weekends. Likewise, friends & clients whom I’ve recommended has always gave positive feedback too. :good:

A little digression here: During the recent Christmas season, Plaza Damas had an actual horse – drawn carriage giving customers complimentary rides. Isn’t that so fun??

Back to the desserts; the post & pictures below is an accumulation from my many visits. I have sampled almost all of her (Ms. Li) desserts but there is always something new whenever I visit so I’m far from bored yet. ;-)

The Tiramisu here comes in both alcoholic or non-alcoholic form. I have always opted for the alcoholic one (RM16) which is pretty heady due to its generous content of alcohol. But the search for the best tiramisu in town is still on-going, for as much as we like Haute Food’s version for its alcohol load, we opined that the mascarpone cheese layers is a tad too mild in taste.

The caramel pecan cheesecake (RM12?) is a wonderfully smooth, soft cheesecake with the rich sweetness of caramel. It is certainly a pleasing deviation from the common fruits/chocolate/etc cheesecakes elsewhere. A dessert-holic myself (if you do not know that already) I’m on a constant quest for extraordinary or creative desserts & I’m always thrilled to discover something new.

The cake has a base of almonds nibs in crushed oreos biscuits & is generously topped with chunks of pecans & chocolate chips. Oh, another thing worthy to note of Haute Food’s dessert; one can really taste the quality of the ingredients used, meaning Li does not cut corners by, for example, using inferior chocolate chips.

But that doesn’t mean we should ignore the common fruit based cheesecake here. The Raspberry Cheesecake. (RM10?), is alright, with the solidity of the cheese in good balance, ie it is not too cheesy or light.
I’m afraid I have lost some receipts from my previous visits. Anyhow, the cakes here ranges from RM9 – Rm12.

As you might have noticed, the base of the cheesecakes are the same. And I appreciate that she uses actual fresh berries as toppings rather than the “jam”/fruit puree spread which is the norm with other bakeries.

I had the scones on my prior visit but those were the plain butter ones. This time, we tried the cheese scones, (RM4.90 each) & we loved how the cheese added an overall dimension of savouriness to it.

Li has never failed to surprise me with her creations. On a recent visit, I was greeted by this scrumptious banana bread & butter pudding with chocolate chips (RM12) in the display chiller.

Oh mama.. I love bread & butter puddings! ;-) The lowest layer was eggy, followed by overlapping layers of bananas, chocolate chips, bread and custard.

While I did enjoy it, I do hope she could improve on it as some parts were just too mushy. A firmer custard would be nicer. See how it can barely hold it’s shape in the bowl?

Still, one’s got to love the crunchy walnuts though! ;-)

Almond croissant. RM6.90. Flaky, nutty & sweet. Nice!

And here goes another dessert-binging session recently with a bunch of cooks/bakers. They are even fussier than I am! LOL.

The Orange & Basil Cake ( RM10) didn’t score high points with them though personally, I liked it. True enough, the basil aroma takes a little getting used to but it kinda grew on me after a while.

Well, I could be biased, as I love a moist cake with citrusy flavours running through it and a slight lilt of zesty-ness. ;-)

Another shot for you to drool over. ;-)

They couldn’t resist ordering the boozy Tiramisu.

And they concurred on the lightness of the cheese layers. Still, it’s hard to get a booz-ier version of this elsewhere, unless you made it yourself of course. ;-)

Dark Chocolate Cake - RM10.

This is every chocoholic ‘s favourite. A superbly rich & moist dark chocolate that won approval even from my fussy baker friend. Beware though; it is quite a tall cake & took the 4 of us a while to polish it off!

Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream – RM10.

We are still looking for the best apple pie in KL. Anyone can recommend? Haute’s apple filling was wonderful as it was not too sweet or too gooey with syrup. But the problem lies with the pie crust; which was unfortunately thick & tasteless. We thought this crust would have worked better with savoury pies.

Beverages options here are the typical coffee & tea selections. Juices are available but it is prepared with Monin syrup. There are some creative mixes though, like the lemon + berries + etc below, priced at about RM10. The Honey Lemon Tea (not pictured here) is RM8.00 per glass. Ginger & Mango Tea is RM7.50 per sachet/serving.

Directions:

A foolproof way would be to park in Hartamas Shopping Centre & to go to the 2nd floor where Starbucks is. Exit through the glass doors & you will see Aji Don Ramen. Proceed to the row behind it and turn right. Walk til the middle of the row, keeping a lookout for 2 big blue and white stripes umbrellas (which is quite obscure as well) on the opposite side. It is somewhere in the middle of the row.

Note: There are hits & misses (it could be that I’m very fussy with my desserts) but Haute Food’s desserts are still a good bet for a satisfying & overall pleasant experience. The homeliness & reasonably priced desserts just got me returning with my friends whenever I’m in search of a nice quiet place to chill & indulge in some cakes.

1 teh tarik “kau” please!!!

.

.

.

And here you go, my version of the BEST teh tarik “kau”. In ice cream form!!

Honey, this is no joke. A weird name for an ice cream venture that churns out just as weird err…I mean.. “interesting” flavours, The Last Polka is an (currently) online ice cream little enterprise that prides itself on its homemade ice cream using purely natural ingredients. And based on what I have tasted, this pretty little business has the potential to grow big.

The most intriguing one has got to be this. The BACON ice cream.

Everybody is curious as to how it could be made. And whether it could work.
And after seeing & tasting it today, it’s pretty clear that it CAN & DOES work.
All factors considered, it is not too bad an idea. Bacons, once deep fried & drained well, is dry, keeps well, & when frozen together with the ice cream, can be quite preservable in nature, though I doubt these homemade preservative free ice cream is meant to be kept for long.

The ice cream itself doesn’t taste of bacon grease or anything of that sort. The ice cream is very rich & creamy, milk/vanilla based & the bacon bits are probably mixed in after the ice cream has set. This is my guess only, for it pretty much taste & felt that way. The sprinkling of pepper just prior to serving was a nice touch, for when consumed together; it adds to the savoury experience as the flavour had intended it to be.

Bacon flavoured ice cream guarantees to be a great conversation starter at parties. We had tasting portions that day, & while I enjoyed it, I do not think I can stomach a whole pint.

But for this, I do not mind many many pints

GUINNESS ice cream!
One thing to note here, all ice creams by The Last Polka does not resemble flavoured ice creams in any way. Intense, smooth, rich & creamy; each spoonful has the perfect balance of flavour as indicated by its name with the amount of cream used to make it.

Left: Nutella, Right: Guinness.

Horlicks fans anyone? Think thick malty Horlicks, but ICED and creamy. If you like your Horlicks in this manner, it’s time to get in touch with The Last Polka! (that crumb of cake on top is for decorative purposes only).

All the ice cream retails at RM23 for a 500ml tub. Order it HERE. Lucky sot me had the privilege to taste all these homemade goodies in tasting portion & hence I can happily say I tried all their variety for now. :yahoo:

The tasting session was hosted by the gracious partners- in-crime of The Last Polka, May + Ee Vee. One can’t help but marvel at their dedication & commitment to produce the best ice cream possible through trial & error (they shared stories of sleepless nights, horrors of spoiled equipment at the most critical time, Heineken beer smells lingering in their fridge for weeks, GETTING FAT eating all their own produce, LOL! ) , as well as their genuine attempt at gathering feedback from their customers on ways of improvement in terms of service & taste for The Last Polka.

Below: Green Tea, Sesame Seed & Peanut Butter with Malt. I am out of adjectives. They were all fabulous; intense in flavour and delightful; though the Green Tea could do with a stronger body.

Another localised flavour – Bandung (Rose syrup with milk) but this was citrusy in aftertaste as there was lime added. Anyhow, this flavour is still in experimental stage.

Left: White Coffee - SO GOOD! I reckon a big scoop could replace an actual cup of coffee. The composition of coffee in it is that much. Right: Mango, The Last Polka‘s only fruity creation. I’m glad they decided against making it a sorbet, cos I personally detest sorbet.

14 years ago, a suave Italian ;-) came to Malaysia and made Malaysia his home.
Like all others, he seeked the comfort of his country’s cuisine & FORTUNATELY for us, he did NOT open ANOTHER Italian restaurant.
Instead, he creates with his hands..lovely creamy gelato, the way he knows how, the way he recalls they were like in Italy & as authentically as possible despite being 9700km away from home.

Dr. Massimo Minecci started Gelatomio (aptly named My Gelato), from a humble 12 flavours shop to currently a gelati-empire boasting 60 flavours with outlets in Time Square, Subang Parade, Pavilion KL, Penang, Melaka and Johor.
He supplies approximately 70 major hotels and restaurants in KL which includes Shangri-La, Le Meridien, Pan Pacific, Prince Hotel, Hilton, G Hotel, chinoiz and espressamente.

Here at Pavilion, KL, the concept is a cosy lounge where you can sit back, use the WIFI (yay!) & slowly savour your dessert.

Massimo’s secret to his success? HARDWORK (what else?) & top grade ingredients; only the best are chosen, and most of them are imported from Italy to preserve the authenticity of his gelati.

His gelati adheres to stringent Quality Control, where the toppings/nuts & CHOCOLATES are imported from Italy, and the FRUITS used for Gelatomio fruits-based gelati are sourced from the best countries that produces them.

I love Gelatomio ‘s Mango (the flavours of the fruit are really intense) & I find the Soy-apple to be a lovely sourish-sorbet gelato.

The DARK CHOC (Regular – RM6.60) is rich & creamy (NO MILK added!) and the Black Sesame (GOMA) (Regular – RM6.60) is one of the best I tasted so far. I started to compare it to other Japanese restaurants’ version, till Dr Massimo grinned & said he supplies if not ALL, 70% of the gelati in the Japanese eateries in Malaysia!!!

Actually, prior to this session, I sampled Gelatomio’s gelati before ( in April, as per the date of picture taken). I had the Crunch & Rum (RM6.60) then.

As soon as I put a spoonful in my mouth and swooshed it around with my saliva, I thought, “….hmmm…NICE.”
The Crunch & Rum is delightfully ALCOHOLIC :good: :good:

The Gelatomio Pavilion KL added a new feature that his other outlets do not carry: the cold stone. Aptly called ‘Gelatomio on the Rock’, you can choose your favourite flavours to be ‘fried’ together with your favourite toppings on the cold slab.

I had alcohol on the rocks before but ice cream on the rock??

below: The cold stone.

So cold that you can see a layer of thin ice on the surface.

2 different bowls at the side of the “work space” holds MELTED white & dark chocolate. Massimo ladles a spoonful of melted chocolate onto the slab & spread it out thinly. The liquid chocolate cools & forms a paper thin layer.

For our chocolate “bowl”, Massimo mixed both white & dark chocolate.

An order of Gelatomio on the Rock is RM 19.80 where you choose 2 flavours of gelati – (ours was Macadamia & Double Choc) & 2 toppings to be mixed with your gelati. If you wish to have it served to you on a chocolate bowl, ADD RM2.00. Additional toppings are RM1.00 each.

The lucky bunch of us enjoyed: (anti-clockwise frm top left)

Gelatomio on the Rock - Macadamia & Double Choc gelato with Oreos, chocolate crisps & chocolate chips imported from Italy. :good:
Gelatomio on the Rock – Strawberry Cheesecake, Blueberry cheesecake gelato with apple pie fillings (made in house), figs & chocolate chunks (all imported).
Rum & Raisins, Orange Cointreau & Crunch & Rum – the ALCOHOLIC gelati bowl. :good:

All of Gelatomio gelati is 93 – 97% FAT – FREE ! (hence my title – License to Indulge ;-) ). For their Fruity range, it is only water, sucrose, fruits added (and of course whatever it is that is needed to make it set). No cream or milk.

Another option: The Platter (RM16.00) which is great for sharing & also to prevent the gelati from being mixed up once it melts.
For our platter that day, Massimo chose Coffee (rich aroma & taste of coffee), Berries (made from Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries & raspberries, & as expected was sweetish sour), white chocolate ( smooth & not overly sweet), & Calamansi (sorbet-like & extremely refreshing! This one really perks up the tastebuds!).

I “Liked” Gelatomio on FACEBOOK !!! Have you??

With so many flavours offered by Gelatomio, you can be sure to find one that you’ll enjoy. I would personally recommend Dark Choc, Sesame, Calamansi, Crunch & Rum, Coffee & Mango!

Whisk, a charming little family- run cafe is one of the outlets worth checking out in Empire Shopping Gallery.

Their menu is not extensive & as per it’s namesake, Whisk – Espresso Bar & Bake Shop prides itself on it’s coffee & it’s array of home – baked goodies, all dotingly baked by the trio of mother and 2 sisters.

Flaky puffs, fat pies and pretty cakes were all lined up vying for attention at the counter. Everything radiates a “family”, home -baked vibe. My attention was, of course, held captive at the sight of cakes!

This pretty cake here is the HummingBird. Originally a favorite cake of the south United States, the Hummingbird Cake is moist and flavorful with chopped pecans, crushed pineapple, and mashed bananas. It is then frosted with delicious cream cheese.

Here at Whisk, The Hummingbird would be more aptly named “Banana” cake. The many-eyed fruit (pineapple) failed to make it’s presence felt and hence the cake seemed to have lost its identity. However, a follow up sms to one of the sisters confirmed that there were pineapples in the cake but “balanced” out as to not overwhelm the flavour.

Well, I still think it is a banana cake ;-) . (Oh, Check out the Daily Grind’s Hummingbird here for comparison.)

Anyhow, texture – wise it was perfect. Less dense than the average, it was light and bursting with the aroma of sweet bananas. The cream cheese icing is lovely as well; dainty & spreads easily. I do detest those heavy paste-y kind!

One cake is never enough. And I just had to try their Carrot & Pecan Cake. In any case, I’m still in the quest of searching for the best carrot cake in town. The version at Collins Bakery in Mt Kiara was good; but sadly now it only comes in cupcakes versions which somehow affected the taste. Haute Food’s Carrot cake was alright….but still not quite the one.

While the Hummingbird was spongy, the carrot cake here is dense. Dessicated coconut was very prevalent, but not so much of the carrots & just a slight nauce of cinnamon was detected. The icing is a replicate of the Hummingbird’s.

Another close up picture of the Banana, err.. I meant Hummingbird cake

There was no Red Velvet available that day, so I guess this calls for a re-visit  . And yea, gimme the lamb pies, quiches and all the savoury goodies too!

Whisk – Espresso Bar & Bake Shop
Location : LG03A, Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang.
Right beside – SuChan. Which is opening soon. ..

Open: 8am to 8pm – DAILY.
A very fussy bread lover, I was most excited when I first heard of this place. Many thanks to Eric for tweeting about it & for the specific directions!

It’s poshy name matches it’s interior. The bungalow that houses LeVain Boulangerie Patisserie is really beautiful, classy and cosy. I love the spaciousness, the high ceilings & aristocratic feel.

Inside, families and young couples dined; and every table is occupied. A good sign; for it was lunch time on a Sunday. However, I have expected this place to have attracted more of the expats & well-heeled crowd. Yet I saw only locals; with 90% being Chinese.
Surprising, considering that LeVain Boulangerie’s menu only has bread, buns, pastries, cakes & 3 types of pasta. This got me thinking, people are actually appreciating good breads & even finding it an acceptable alternative for a main meal.

LeVain Boulangerie’s unique factor offering is it’s stone oven baked pastries. I didn’t get a chance to see it, and I’m assuming it’s somewhere behind all these electrical ovens.

The range and diversity of their breads, pastries, sandwiches and cakes were awesomely impressive. Instead of the boring chicken sausage pizzas, there was olives and chicken crusty thins, Mentaiko (marinated fish roe) Buns in place of bland tuna, Cashew maple replacing common butter honey buns. :yahoo:

On the “French” side, there were Rye cranberry loaves, 4 kinds of crusty baguettes (multi cereal, rye & etc) , croissants, Ficelle Breads & then there are freshly assembled sandwiches (looking deceptively very Sun Moulin here) with bountiful fillings yet all reasonably priced. :good:

Of course, let’s not forget some Malaysian-ised items like Durian Melon buns, fried noodles buns (char kuey in a bun anyone?) & beef rendang donuts (which was heavenly by the way).

I almost went berserk, loading my tray with almost everything, and putting them back cos I couldn’t decide exactly which I want! Everything looked absolutely amazing and obscenely delicious. It didn’t help that I’m a BREAD obssessed freak.

After several rounds of horrific indecisive picking, my tummy growled it’s protest & I finally settled for the Cheese Mango Tart & a French Loaf. Brendan & Jeremy took less than 5 mins each & was already seated with their coffees by the time I got to the table ;-)

The beef rendang donut was really good, & it helped that we got ours piping hot out of the kitchen. The crisp exterior went wonderfully with it’s savoury insides. The baby chocolate croissants was flaky & buttery as how it should be for RM1.50 each. The crab bun (RM3.60) was utterly forgettable & not recommended for it’s price. My mango cheese tart (RM4.30) was alright, but I certainly hope they could use FRESH mangoes instead of the preserved ones!!!!!

The best was the mashed potato bun, with small cuts of ham inside. :mail: The smooth creamy potatoes were studded with some potato chunks which helped to give it some body & the long sausage roll (RM4.60) was fun to chew on. Even Jeremy’s simple donut & butter roll (RM1.00) was exquisitely yummy.

All in all, it was very obvious that the kitchen got it’s TECHNIQUES and ingredients right. All the buns were deliciously fluffy & soft & each bun’s top layer is pleasantly crisp. I do wonder how that’s achieved! The crusty breads were nicely eerrrrr…crusty without being too hard and it’s insides soft & chewy. I personally opined that LeVain Boulangerie one of the best bakeries in town; better than most hotels & comparable to The Loaf!

Oh, we ordered a Dry Beef Curry Pasta too ( RM9.90). Delicious thin angelhair pasta with fragrant curry!

I bought some cakes for take-away (my stash for the week) & BOTH were splendid!!!

My vote goes to this one – Ananas - RM8.00 (Pineapple cream/custard, chocolate with a banana cake layer). (Ananas – pineapple – get it???)

Noisette (RM8.50) – mocha mousse, hazelnut chocolate with crumbly hazelnut “cake” for the bottom layer.

We walked around and took some pictures. I was particularly liked the coffee- making apparatus displayed. There were 2 cabinets full of them.

An Okonomiyaki is a form of savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. Okonomi means “what you like”, and yaki meaning “grilled” ; case in example the meat/seafood in the okonomiyaki (yakitori) & the noodles in it (yakisoba).

In Japan, Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with Kansai or Hiroshima areas, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region. (source: Wikipedia)

In Malaysia, Okonomiyaki can be found in…… of all places; Low Yat Plaza, though I just read recently of another restaurant who offers this tasty & simple pancake.

The dining area is very bare; or should I say there is none? Your choices are either right in front of the teppanyaki hot plate, or on tables on the walkway in front of their tiny shoplot.

The set-up is no-frills and simple, and the same could be said of the food. Meats and seafood are all lightly seasoned & grilled. Portions are fair for the price you pay, which starts from RM16+ onwards for each Okonomiyaki.

Ok, I’m gross. I actually dug out the fillings for my Seafood & Pork Okonomiyaki But I’m sure guys wanted to see what you get for RM16+, right?

Like I said, the ingredients are a aplenty. There were copious amount of squids, prawns, bean sprouts, noodles and large pieces of pork.

Below: The proper Okonomiyaki before I started dissecting it.

It all started out with the a layer of batter, which forms the base layer of the okonomiyaki. Shredded cabbage & bean sprouts followed by the meats and seafood were then piled on top.

I do not know what the original noodles should be, but here I got these “Chinese yellow mee lookalike”. These were lightly seasoned and fried.

The okonomiyaki is then flipped over, allowing the ingredients to cook (note the meats and seafood is on top, presumably for direct contact with the teppanyaki pan).

I was worried at first, seeing that the raw ingredients were not mixed up and fried but just left overturned as below. I wondered if it’s going to be undercooked but it turned out alright so there wasn’t any cause for concern in the end.

Then an egg was cracked & spread out to form the top layer. The okonomiyaki is transfered onto the egg layer.

The whole okonomiyaki is flipped around again, leaving the egg on top and a ‘special’ sweet sauce ( I suspect it is Teriyaki-based) is slatered generously over the top.

A dash of salt & pepper plus a sprinkle of chopped parsley later, the Okonomiyaki is ready to be served.

Don’t be fooled by the size and simple outlook. This darn omelette is very filling. I almost couldn’t finish it myself. ALMOST.

I enjoyed my FIRST Okonomiyaki & I’m pleased that in a way, it is a very healthy snack since minimal oil was used. I hope to taste an actual one in Japan. This is supposedly authentic but then, who could verify?

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland features a new adventure in the form of a 19 year old Alice, about to be married off to a ‘Lord’ of an acceptable social standing & reputable family, which other than an indigestion problem, would have been considered a catch as a husband.

In the midst of discovering herself & her direction in life (wow, you mean this kind of thing do happen back then?), she was unwittingly bought back to the Wonderland she visited as a child, but this time with absolutely no recollection of what happened.

I am writing this review as someone who has absolutely no idea of the story of Alice in Wonderland. Nope, I haven’t read the book, nor I do have any such intention to do so in the next 10 years.

Back to movie….I’m sorry that I didn’t really enjoy it. I mean, yeah, there was plenty of props, an almost unbelievable FASHIONABLE attire (check out Alice’s dresses!) and dialogues at most parts that was completely UNcomprehensible.

The 3D rendition was almost negligible too; for all that I could make out of the special effects (if there was any to begin with).

Now now, don’t let a cynical 28- year- old who does not believe in fairy tales deter you from the snaking long queues at the ticketing counter.
I think this makes an entertaining watch for those who are fans of Alice and is certainly a very child- friendly film, though The White Queen is a bit too bimbo-ish to be of any role model. All in all, it is still the perfect movie for families.

For me, the tea party made up for any disappointment. Scrummy sandwiches, English cookies and ok-can-eat-la cupcakes. We ate for free of course, but no fret, the tea set is available for RM35++ at Dome or Aseana Cafe.

Eye candy: Coffee, tea or me? ;p

For the KLCC screening (there is another in MV this coming Wed, which promises to be bigger, better & more extravagant!), the tea party was at the Melium Galleria, Ground Floor, Suria KLCC. The whole place was decked out in props and an actual tea table for Alice and her friends were laid out at the venue.

Greedy me walloped the whole plate (it was meant for 2 ) by myself. My vote goes to the sandwiches and scones.

Free popcorn & Coke at the entrance to the cinema hall. A big thank you to Disney, Buena Vista Columbia & The Melium Group for the exclusive Media invites.

I can’t resist snapping pics of these dresses by The Melium Group. I didn’t bother asking for the prices of course.

This shop never fails to pull in the crowd even on weekdays. And that reminded me of those J Co hey-days

However, I doubt these people actually make any purchases. They were all much more fascinated watching the making of these yummy candies.
Likewise for myself, I joined the crowd & went click-happy.

The still soft & pliable candy were stretched manually by hand from its original huge shapeless mass. Then they were rolled & left for a while to cool. After it has harden enough, it is cut into little pop- into – the -mouth chunks.

It is then packaged into these little transparent jars & sold between RM13 – 19 each, depending on the flavours.
They have these huge ones packaged in plastic too, though I do wonder who would buy these!

STICKY is apparently a very popular hand made candy brand in Australia; specializing in hand-made, quality rock candy and sugar art.

Each of these rock candies comes with their own colourful design and even have words inside them. Again, I wonder how they “shape” the designs. A colour for the outer layer, inner another colour plus different wordings & shapes within. Yet, the candy is one huge lump of coloured sugar before it was rolled into long sticks.

Taste-wise, they were a ‘lil sourish & not too sweet. Although I am not a candy person, I actually liked them & won’t mind a bottle as the sweets tasted very ‘fresh’ & “non artificial”.

This shop was officially launched on the 7th of November ’09 and the crowd on that day was a huge one as they were giving out free samples. So yeah, free samples + Malaysians = ruckus

A thing to note; STICKY takes order for customisation of sweets too. I asked for orange & blue colours, 2 layers & the initials “TNG” inside and was quoted RM730 for 6kg.
I didn’t order it of course ;p, but it is a good option to keep in mind for special occasions like corporate launches, weddings, gift packs & so forth.
