Meats were done very well too..

…the Grilled Lamb was one of the stellar dishes that night, though the BBQ ribs were dissappointingly dry.

The Cajun chicken fared better………

I love the Pear & Berry Salad..……..

Desserts were sweet but forgettable, except for the “That Chocolate Thing“, which was akin to a molten lava in a glass.

Food verdict:

The Far Out Dip is by far my personal favourite. During the session, it came together as part the Run Across America Sampler. Think mushy Spinach quiche filling; (for the lack of a better description), creamy & rich, all blended into a dip which consist of roasted red peppers, artichokes & Monterey Jack Cheese. Supposedly paired with homemade tortilla chips, I just dug in on it’s own, for it’s that :good:

On the whole, food were generally faultless & seafood served were fresh (I would have complained if otherwise!). Although I’m not a shrimp fan, I still enjoyed the many variations of shrimps, from deep fried ones (which is basically coated in different batter), to chilled shrimps, shrimps in cream sauce (from the linguini) & chargrilled ones in bourbon sauce, which was delicious! So essentially, there is something for everyone, even for a non-shrimp fan.

But if you are really really allergic to seafood & got tricked/dragged/blindfolded into Bubba Gump, fret not! Just zoom in for the grilled lamb. Done medium, it’s tasty enough for it’s price. I wouldn’t personally recommend the BBQ ribs and chicken, as I find the ribs dry and flaky. The chicken was fine though; as it was tender and well-marinated.

A vegan? On a diet? Constipated? ;-)
Salads are the perfect remedy then! Though it’s just normal lettuce (seriously, restaurants serving salads can take a point or 2 from California Pizza Kitchen, whose salads is truly worthy to be defined as salads; where there’s more variety of greens than just the cheap lettuce!), what got me hooked was the sweetish, slightly tangy raspberry vinaigrette which was a refreshing twist to the customary boring balsamic vinaigrettes.
The charbroiled chicken is tasty, the strawberries & pears sweet & the glazed pecans crunchy. Overall this makes for a satisfactory salad :good:
Note: There are 2 other salads options here as well.

I ordered a Alabama Sweet Smoothie (RM11.90) – Peanut Butter, choc and non-fat Vanilla Frozen Yogurt and found it thick, rich & as good as a smoothie should be.

My 1st visit didn’t got off to a very good start as we got lost though I followed the map on the website to the T.
So take my advice; forget the map.

A foolproof way would be to park in Hartamas Shopping Centre & to go to the 2nd floor where Starbucks is. Exit through the glass doors & you will see Aji Don Ramen. Proceed to the row behind it and turn right. Walk til the middle of the row, keeping a lookout for 2 big blue and white stripes umbrellas (which is quite obscure as well) on the opposite side. It is somewhere in the middle of the row.

Not familiar with HSC/Plaza Damas, we walked up & down the row a few times on our first visit. I would have hopped into other outlets (there’s quite a selection of eateries here) but the need to verify the claims of “best scones in Malaysia” and “superb sandwiches” had me obstinately thrudging up and down looking for The Haute Food Co.

Boy, was I glad when I finally spotted the entrance.

Once a foot was in the door, my eyes were riveted at the selection of baked goods at the counter. Oh my gawd..it’s desserts heaven here! And everything looked scrumptious..with each sporting the ‘carelessly” assembled together, individually home-baked goodness look.

I propelled forward, zoomed in on the scones and started drooling over the cakes.

See? Nonchalantly shaped cookies, devil- may- care rolled croissants and randomly cut scones. Lovely!

Below clockwise from left: Stuffed to the crust blueberry/apple pie, raspberry lemon cheese cake, carrot cake and sticky date pudding baked in a pot.

The scones, baked fresh daily, came with strawberry jam with REAL strawberries (not the paste-y kind mind you) which was a bit sweet but the fresh whip cream was heavenly.

Warm and buttery..crumbly yet firm, the scone is really worth the trip alone. (I’m not sure about the “best in Malaysia part”, I have to eat more scones before laying claim to that  ). It is reasonably RM4.90 for a set of 2.

Their pasta of the day (which rotates every few days) then was the beef lasagne, RM15.90. All of the mains comes with a side salad, lightly drizzled with vinagrette or just served fresh.
I find the pasta very homely & the sauce fresh with all the right flavours. I did feedback that I find the pasta sheets a weee bit “elastical” but maybe that was considered al dente?

Nope, don’t expect symmetrically cut lasagne. This resembles a dollop of pasta scooped from a bigger tray and heaped on a plate. I love it! It seems so “homely” .. if you get what I mean. ;-)

My chicken Frittata (RM15.90) was delicious! The potatoes at the bottom were firm (I would personally have preferred them softer) and the chicken + pesto + tomatoes combo really did me in. But but..if only the potatoes were softer…hhmm..

Their iced latte RM7.90 wasn’t memorable.. I find it a bit ‘thin’ and lacked ‘kick’.

The day after, I dragged UnkaLeong here. Chef Li (owner/baker/cook) recommended her freshly out of the oven Italian Apple Cake. While I’m not sure how an actual Italian apple cake is supposed to be; I like this one because it does not have the gooey filling of an American apple pie. Seriously, I prefer my apples not reduced into a soggy sticky messl. Here, each apple slice is firm but soft with it’s tartness intact, & the whole slice was chockfull of semi sweet raisins and nuts.

Yes, it is a cake. No pastry or phyllo crust. Only a thin layer of butter sponge on top. Amazing stuff! (RM7 or 8, sorry lost the receipt)

Greedy me packed home a slice of moist and not overly sweet carrot cake (RM7-8?) for the week. (Ok, who am I kidding? I eat an average of 3 cakes per week  )

The texture somewhat had me comparing it to a fruit cake cos of it’s densely packed structure but minus the over- the – top sweetness. As usual, there were walnuts, julliened carrots and raisins. The cream cheese topping was tinged with lemon that lends a sourish tang. It may not be the best ( I think Collins Bakery in Mt Kiara does a better one), but it’s still better than Dome’s, Delicious’s and Alexis’s version!

Oh yes, of course we did have REAL food. ;-)

My roast beef sandwich, (RM13.50) came with succulent thick medium rare beef slices and generous layers of caramelized onions.

UnkaLeong has the Lamb Wrap, RM15.90. The pita has a perfect chewy-crispy balance and the heaving stuffing of roasted lamb was sublime. Pour in the mint yogurt dip that came with it and you have the perfect lamb pita.

Look at the bountiful fillings!

I can’t wait to stock up on their desserts! The menu is pretty limited for now & I ‘m aiming for their American breakfast next. Based on what we had so far, it seemed that they have a good deli supplier. I trust that their breakfast items will impress (I hope).

I’m a careful person with money (call me a scrooge if you will) . Yet I felt that the prices were reasonable considering the portion and quality of food.

Had a bad dining experience there.
Went there last night with 3 friends to have a try on the food since everyone gave them thumbs up. When I reached there around 6.30pm, only 1 table was occupied. Guess I was early for dinner. I was impressed by the shop deco and the menu they offer. While waiting for the food, more people came and finally every table was filled up.

While we are trying to push all the food inside our terribly full tummy, the daughter kept asking us “Any further order?” She asked that every 5 minutes. So annoying! She even cleared the empty plate without asking. Then it started to run heavily outside. My friend ordered a basket of fries, cheese rounds and 4 bottles of Budweiser while waiting for rain to stop. The girl kept staring at us as the signal to leave the table as there are people waiting to be seated. We ignored as we believe customers always have the right and we still haven’t finish our food. Finally the girl came over our table and asked, “can I clear your table?” and we are shocked as we still have half basket of fries and we haven’t finish our beer. Can you imagine that? She was trying to shoo us away. We was so angry! How can she do that to customer? So we just pay the bill and swear will never go back there again. Never ever! Disappointed with her PR skill.

I have been to Betty’s many many times.. and this place IS very popular. It is unfortunate that the above incident happened, and while I can’t say much for the service, the food there is GOOD. Some dishes even awesome, with reasonable prices to boot.

We always start with their freshly squeezed Lemonade. Tangy, refreshing and cooling, it’s a good prelude to the onslaught of porcine infused dishes to come.

On one of my many visits, my friend ordered the Crunch Topped Homemade Macaroni And Cheese ( RM12). One can argue that this is do-able at home, but seriously? I would gladly just pay RM12. A seriously comfort food dish, yet done with the right amount of cream, cheese and baked just right. Bad news for weight-watchers! This is Carbo-licious!!

Betty’s House Salad, (RM8 – ) with chopped fresh iceberg lettuce, sliced red tomatoes and cubed apple drenched with their house creamy, tangy yet unusual dressing was a welcome relief from the usual Vinaigrette based dressings that I had to endure in my salads. We suspected it was an emulsion of sorts, but since my friend who cooks very well couldn’t place the exact ingredients that went into the dressing, I gave up hoping I could replicate this at home.

Betty’s runs some House Specials every 2 weeks or so, and the time we were there, they had this Barley Mushroom soup. I think it was RM11 or somewhere there. Anyhow, the soup was what a soup should be, heart warming, simple and easy on the stomach.

Their signature Apple Crumble, (RM8) tasted like no other apple crumble out there. It wasn’t all crust like most commercial ones & the apple were gently stewed in it’s own juices resulting in a touch of natural sweetness that was pleasant on the palate. Not my favourite in town, but a version that would please most diners.

When a group of Penang food bloggers hit KL, I bought them to Betty’s immediately. It does not make sense anyhow to bring Penangites to hawkers stalls here! Furthermore, there isn’t any American Mex cuisine in Pg & the prices here are agreeable even to Penangites who are known for their motto: Cheap & Good food please!

At Betty’s, their signature Meatloaf never failed to please. Moist, loosely held together & soft, it was a faultless porky dish.

Pan Fried Pork Chop w Orange Cream, RM20.00.
Slow pan fried juicy pork chops served with creamy zesty orange sauce.
I am and will always be wary of pork chops, especially when the parts used are the lean ones. It is so easy to overcook it & then you’ll be presented with a tough & chewy slab of meat. Thankfully the pork chops served were cooked to the right degree. I can’t really make out the citrus flavour in the supposedly orange sauce, but after a few conscious tries, I realized it does leave a sweet bitter orange aftertaste lingering in your mouth.

Grilled Beer Braised Boston Butt s/w Mash, Peas & Carrot - (RMRm25.50). Quite a mouthful of a fancy name, but tastewise was just so-so.

Grilled baby back ribs (350g) RM28.50.
There were 2 large slabs of ribs, (definitely worth the $!) and it was well infused with the marinate. Texture-wise; it was fork-tender and succulent. Not much chewing required! The sauce had reminiscence of BBQ based and was sweetish and thick. I actually prefered the Beer sauce that was served in the little paper cup.

If there’s anything you got to try at Betty’s, it’s this – The Wild Hog (RM31.50). A combination of Ham Steak, Bacon, Sausage & Sides. *BURPS*.

Enough said.

The Pork Ribs. RM24. I can’t really remember which style this was. But the tasty sauce and a good cut of both lean and fat got the thumbs up from both me & my fussy friend.

Their version of Bread & Butter Pudding, (RM8) may be an acquired taste by some. It is certainly not your run of the mill baked version, and it didn’t taste like one either. For starters, it is not too sweet & it doesn’t come with a thick custard layer. And the bread slices weren’t cut and layered in thick slices either. As you can see below, it is flat. I myself haven’t quite decided if it would be a favourite of mine Maybe another visit would help me make up my mind??

An area alien to me really. Too far & nothing intriguing there.
Other than La Cucina which I have been trying to visit for months, Taipan remains an area pretty much as humdrum as it can get.

And then I got an invite from Marian, about a new swanky diner opening in here, with a concept to boot.

Good ol Happy Days, she said, is an American diner, and serves cuisine like Chilli’s.

Do you know Happy Days? she asked.
I gaped; “Err…”
“It’s from the 70s”, she went on to explain..& I immediately grinned & chirped, “Oh.. that era.. then Unka would know. I can ask him”. ;p

So the night of the launch came, & I went, expecting another sit-down session, where we would be served with a myriad of dishes, where we would take the customary pics, followed by some chit-chat with the chef about the food; yadayada.. and perhaps an interview with the proprietor, for some insights on the concept.

Yup, I thought that’s all to it.

So when our chauffeured car dropped us off right front of this, my jaw literally dropped.

Wah.. so happening one ahhh????

A 3 level bistro, with red & silver vinyl chairs, checkered floors, pool tables and a long bar serving almost every drinks imaginable, stepping into the outlet was an assault on the senses.
Even more so on the eyes. Everything’s so bright & cheery!
“Happy” came to mind, and that’s exactly the state of being that’s advocated by this outlet.

Not much to be reviewed on the food, as the free-flow dishes that night was pretty mass produced, and hence probably not a good indication of the quality.

However, most dishes was most palatable, & the group of us must have polished off 30 lamb chops among ourselves!

It was one happy Friday, with entertaining performances by the Beansproutz Dancers, complete with colourful cheeky costumes and sassy dance moves, almost making me feel like breaking into a hip gyrating & booty shaking dance as well.

ps: Do check out the video by cumi & ciki & even more pictures here by the Qwazymonkey.

As if the night wasn’t hot enough with lively dances & Elvis in the house, there was a daring fiery performance by The King Of Limbo ROck…

Not enough with just fire, our King of Limbo Rock decided to go blind-folded!

I think Good Ol Happy Days Diner may just be the reason for me to venture more into this area called Taipan. More so when I spied ribs, BURGERS, pizzas and MILKSHAKES on the menu.

Live band will be playing after dinners on Thursday, Friday and Sat. Music from the 60-70s (what else?) will be played throughout the day.
So, with this coming Fri, 28th Nov being a public holiday, anyone for some dose of Good Ol Happy Days??

note: This would be not the only outlet, for its founder Mr Fariz Abdullah , MD of SKN Leisure Entertainment and Grp Chairman Datuk Seri Shamir Kumar Nandy has set sights on opening another in KL, followed by one in Penang.

Another short quick post since the weekend is here

Come Friday, my thoughts will be on weekend morning runs & gym sessions followed by my favorite, American style brekkie, a far cry from the 5 days week of 2 slices of bread and soya, gobbled down while navigating traffic.

My favourite is still The Pink Sage followed closely by Betty’s MidWest Kitchen and then The Departure Lounge.

Sadly though, the outlet at Aman Suria is re-locating to Uptown.
It won’t be as convenient anymore for me hence future visits are more likely to be limited as weekend treats.

But I’m hooked on their bagels & that made it worth the extra effort/drive.

Turkey Bacon Butty, RM7.90.

Two hearty large slices of bacon, tomato, lettuce with HP sauce and mayo.
The bagel is nicely chewy, hence the satisfaction of having it longer in my mouth as I slowly savour the softness and slight resistance of the dough before it disintegrates into nothingness. Hmmmmm……
Shit, I’m such a bread-whore!

The next round, I put the beef bacon to test.

Suffice to say that the bagel stayed consistent, and the beef bacon aint bad either. Not as juicy as the turkey’s which was more of the soft “ham” texture, this was more of the “dried” kind, yet not crisp.

Of course, for those who know me; a bagel like probably filled all of a 10% of my bottomless pit, especially if its daytime. Hence the next order.

Chicken Puebla, RM13.90.
Grilled chicken breast, roasted peppers, sauteed onions, cheese and salsa in tortilla.

Mistake, mistake, mistake. *smacks oneself on the head*

So, yeah, I got this thick slab of bland chicken breast with a scarce layer of sauce and cheese.
Heck, I take that back…what cheese??
By the way, are those tortillas?? Humrphh.. Of course not, it’s focaccia. So I had mexican salsa with mexican chips on I-don’t taste-no-rosemary-or any herb-for-that-matter Mediterranean bread. Plliithhh…..

The Breakfast Set is customizable, and priced accordingly of course. Pretty decent scrambled eggs and white sausages I would say.

But this outlet is just so comfy and peaceful. Parking’s a breeze and there aren’t many people competing with you for the WIFI bandwidth!
Sigh, that’s probably the reason why they are locating anyways.

A quick and fast post this time since tomorrow is the weekend already.

Also cos we only had one dish before I got distracted by the Sun paper and dragged Unka to hunt for the next location as featured in METRO ;p
(this one is next next post ok!)

Back to our brekkie; the picture above pretty much sums up the breakfast platter, with one fat pork sausage, crispy slightly charred bacon and fluffy buttermilk pancakes.

Let’s start with the bacon.
Smoky, charred and crispy. Nice streaky layers of fat and meat. This is good, really good.

The sausage, now that’s another level of “good” altogether. I am still salivating thinking and looking at this pic now.

Should I say awesome? Lip smacking delicious?
I don’t know.
It’s just so so good!!

Look at the sausage above..

& imagine this..

Taut, crisp casing.
One bite.
Resistance….then………… the skin cracks.
Moist, sweet lava of meat juices burst into your mouth cavity.
Proceed to chew.
More juices, coupled with hot cheese and gritty smoky meat floods the sensory palate.
Savour & swallow with absolute satisfaction.

Hmmmm…
Note to oneself: I really need to know where they got their sausages from!

Having said all that, the rest of the platter wasn’t that drool-worthy. I find the scrambled eggs a bit overdone.

The coffee was generic.

And lastly, the pancakes failed to impress, it was a bit burnt at the sides and ain’t fluffy enough. I would say The Pink Sage does a better version.
Anyhow, Eve says the pancakes are meant to be that way. So I guess I will have to make a special request the next time I order their pancakes! No burnt edges for me please!
