Though not as popular, or often mentioned in the same breath as it’s more famous counterparts (ie; Kanna, Nirwana’s @ Bangsar, Devi’s @ TTDI & Sri Paandi’s or Annalakshmi & Vishals), Lotus Curry House actually serves pretty decent Banana Leaf Rice.

The one I frequent, which happens to be in close proximity to my place, is the one at Aman Suria. I believe Lotus Curry House has quite a chain of branches as well, but I like it here as it’s newer, cleaner and usually not as crowded with <del>Indians</del> people.

There’s 2 section to the dining area, one air-conditioned and another “alfresco” where the dishes, drinks station, frying station and roti-making stations are located. Tables are spaciously laid out and the place doesn’t reek of grease or sweat.

Most importantly, the dishes displayed are hot, freshly cooked and replenished pretty fast, especially during lunch/dinner hour. Hence the dishes are not left for long hours on display, minimising the risk of food poisoning.

Having said that, a friend of mine recently reported a mild case of food poisoning after a meal here. But I have not personally encountered any unpleasant experiences myself.

I guess the key is to visit in the earlier part of the day when the food is fresh. After all, curries are mostly coconut milk based and they don’t keep too well.
I’m certainly not implying that it’s acceptable for food served in the evenings to be lacking in freshness and quality, but for our own safety & hygienic reasons, it’s better to err on the the safe side.

Back to the food.
Another reason I liked Lotus is for their fried bitter gourd. Nirwana’s is famous, and this comes close.

The vegetables were cooked properly as well, with at least 4 -6 selections available during peak hours.

As I have mentioned before in my post, I tend to judge a banana leaf outlet by it’s basic set, which consisted of just the rice and vegetables.
The add-ons of fried chicken/fish and mutton or chicken varuval are a bonus. I love my vegetables and would prefer them not to be overcooked or overly oily. So far, Lotus Curry House at Aman Suria met these simple criteria.

Price-wise, I can’t complain either as it’s pretty standard. The basic vegetarian set is RM5.00 and add-ons of chicken or mutton curries are about +- RM5.00.

Their fish and dhall curries are flavoursome and so is their rasam; a delicious south Indian soup with the predominance of tomato extract, which has a good balance of sourness and spices.

So, any fans of Lotus Curry House banana leaf here?

This post will be updated from time to time as I sample more dishes from Andes BYO in Aman Suria. For my earlier post on their TO- DIE- FOR PORK BURGERS, click HERE ;-)

For a quick lunch, the set lunches here is pretty worth the $. For RM7, (not incl of 5% service tax), the portions are sufficient for a normal- appetite diner & it comes with iced tea.

This is Andes’ Yummy Mummy Lamb Stew. The first vision I got from the word “lamb stew” is the thick broth-y version with chunks of carrots & potatoes. Well, here at Andes, it got Chinese-fied.

But no complains. The meat was tender, well marinated & there was a lot of it for RM7.

The Pasta Carbonara was just so-so in my friend’s George’s books & we didn’t care much for the lean slivers of bacon that tasted more like ham.

For one of the beers nights, we added this order for fun. Which turned out to be a mistake. The sausages’ texture was akin to powdered gluten.

A piping hot bowl of fresh and very homemade tasting mushroom soup made the night right again.

Advice: Stick to the meats – pork burgers, pork chops, lamb.

I love my burgers. I think that’s no secret for those who knows me & follow my blog ;-). However, I got a particular weakness for PORK burgers and would visit food outlets just for their pork burgers & nothing else.

Andes BYO (Bring Your Own) at Aman Suria took over Pizza vs Satay earlier in this June. I personally thought it has done us all a big favour; for Pizza vs Satay was hardly ever operational in the 1st place. And we certainly welcome more eateries here in deary Aman Suria, especially one with WIFI! ;-)

Ande’s comes under my “favourite under RM15” pork burgers category. No doubt places like El Meson, Sid’s etc serves superb pork burgers but for “Rebecca’s Porkburger-meter” ;-) they will fall under gourmet pork burgers between RM20-35 so comparison of taste, texture & flavour is more fairly judged.

Andes BYO – Pork Burger, RM12.90.

Look at that, every pork burger lover’s dream isn’t it? Chunky, meaty, pink and juicy. All for RM12.90!

Here’s another version of Ande’s pork burgers – the Aussie Bacon Burger Wrap RM15.90.
See? The patty’s consistently THICK!

We stumbled upon Andes on their opening after a long lonnnggg day at work. The guys immediately approved of the place upon seeing the beer options. The cafe is small, cosy and there are 2 large LCDs for entertainment, making it perfect for football nights.

Stella Artoise RM 14.50(Happy Hour) RM16.60(Normal) Happy Hour are until 9.00pm.

These are some of the items we tried over a few separate occasions & overall, we found the food hearty in portion, value for $, TASTY & well prepared.

On my salad days, I find Andes’s caesar salad simple but satisfying enough for its price. The homemade dressing and the generous amount of cheese on top is worthy of mention. Plain Caesar: RM7.90, Oz Salad with Meat RM11.90.

The Aussie Bacon Wrap pork burger here is the bomb. The patty is SO THICK yet it is perfectly done, though I must warn you; some might find it undercooked as it is slightly on the pinkish side. For me, I had no complains. My usual gripe of overly salty patties is absent here too. And the texture? Delightfully meaty! I tend to judge my burgers by the texture as that is very important and here, it is certainly up to mark.

The Grilled Lamb Chops (RM18.90) comes with 2 huge slabs of beautifully grilled lamb. Another truly value for money dish. Though we didn’t specify our requirement for the level of doneness, it arrived perfectly medium, slightly pinkish inside, well seasoned & tender.

The only let-down was the absolutely non-delightful mash. To me it was strangely gummy and weird tasting.

I was recommended their specialty chicken dish, Zaw Fried Chicken, RM13.90 (ala carte) or you could order it as a set for lunch at RM7.00, which includes a drink (Ice Tea or Ice Water) *size would be a little bit smaller for set lunch.

The highlight of this dish is the 2 different chillies. Caution was given at the very beginning. The one on the right is the fiery – burn- you- to -hell type while it’s sweet & slightly spicy twin was alike the sambal you normally get with your nasi lemak.

The “oil rice” was herbaceous & yet lightly fluffy. The chicken was a huge thunder- thigh portion with crackly skin encasing tender flesh within. I thought this dish is a lovely variation of the typical nasi lemak. The chicken’s marinate was thankfully NOT the common kunyit (tumeric) rub, the rice wasn’t exactly nasi lemak and even the chilli had some sort of differentiating factor.

Chicken Mignion RM24.90. If you love your bacon, you will thoroughly approve of this. It took them some time to serve this dish, but the wait was worthwhile. The chicken roll has been cooked and allowed to absorb the fatty flavour from the bacon. Fuuuh! ;-)

Complimentary ice cream that comes with the sets.

Elaine left a comment on my previous post on Betty’s. (Post HERE still under my old blog)

Had a bad dining experience there.
Went there last night with 3 friends to have a try on the food since everyone gave them thumbs up. When I reached there around 6.30pm, only 1 table was occupied. Guess I was early for dinner. I was impressed by the shop deco and the menu they offer. While waiting for the food, more people came and finally every table was filled up.

While we are trying to push all the food inside our terribly full tummy, the daughter kept asking us “Any further order?” She asked that every 5 minutes. So annoying! She even cleared the empty plate without asking. Then it started to run heavily outside. My friend ordered a basket of fries, cheese rounds and 4 bottles of Budweiser while waiting for rain to stop. The girl kept staring at us as the signal to leave the table as there are people waiting to be seated. We ignored as we believe customers always have the right and we still haven’t finish our food. Finally the girl came over our table and asked, “can I clear your table?” and we are shocked as we still have half basket of fries and we haven’t finish our beer. Can you imagine that? She was trying to shoo us away. We was so angry! How can she do that to customer? So we just pay the bill and swear will never go back there again. Never ever! Disappointed with her PR skill.

I have been to Betty’s many many times.. and this place IS very popular. It is unfortunate that the above incident happened, and while I can’t say much for the service, the food there is GOOD. Some dishes even awesome, with reasonable prices to boot.

We always start with their freshly squeezed Lemonade. Tangy, refreshing and cooling, it’s a good prelude to the onslaught of porcine infused dishes to come.

On one of my many visits, my friend ordered the Crunch Topped Homemade Macaroni And Cheese ( RM12). One can argue that this is do-able at home, but seriously? I would gladly just pay RM12. A seriously comfort food dish, yet done with the right amount of cream, cheese and baked just right. Bad news for weight-watchers! This is Carbo-licious!!

Betty’s House Salad, (RM8 – ) with chopped fresh iceberg lettuce, sliced red tomatoes and cubed apple drenched with their house creamy, tangy yet unusual dressing was a welcome relief from the usual Vinaigrette based dressings that I had to endure in my salads. We suspected it was an emulsion of sorts, but since my friend who cooks very well couldn’t place the exact ingredients that went into the dressing, I gave up hoping I could replicate this at home.

Betty’s runs some House Specials every 2 weeks or so, and the time we were there, they had this Barley Mushroom soup. I think it was RM11 or somewhere there. Anyhow, the soup was what a soup should be, heart warming, simple and easy on the stomach.

Their signature Apple Crumble, (RM8) tasted like no other apple crumble out there. It wasn’t all crust like most commercial ones & the apple were gently stewed in it’s own juices resulting in a touch of natural sweetness that was pleasant on the palate. Not my favourite in town, but a version that would please most diners.

When a group of Penang food bloggers hit KL, I bought them to Betty’s immediately. It does not make sense anyhow to bring Penangites to hawkers stalls here! Furthermore, there isn’t any American Mex cuisine in Pg & the prices here are agreeable even to Penangites who are known for their motto: Cheap & Good food please!

At Betty’s, their signature Meatloaf never failed to please. Moist, loosely held together & soft, it was a faultless porky dish.

Pan Fried Pork Chop w Orange Cream, RM20.00.
Slow pan fried juicy pork chops served with creamy zesty orange sauce.
I am and will always be wary of pork chops, especially when the parts used are the lean ones. It is so easy to overcook it & then you’ll be presented with a tough & chewy slab of meat. Thankfully the pork chops served were cooked to the right degree. I can’t really make out the citrus flavour in the supposedly orange sauce, but after a few conscious tries, I realized it does leave a sweet bitter orange aftertaste lingering in your mouth.

Grilled Beer Braised Boston Butt s/w Mash, Peas & Carrot - (RMRm25.50). Quite a mouthful of a fancy name, but tastewise was just so-so.

Grilled baby back ribs (350g) RM28.50.
There were 2 large slabs of ribs, (definitely worth the $!) and it was well infused with the marinate. Texture-wise; it was fork-tender and succulent. Not much chewing required! The sauce had reminiscence of BBQ based and was sweetish and thick. I actually prefered the Beer sauce that was served in the little paper cup.

If there’s anything you got to try at Betty’s, it’s this – The Wild Hog (RM31.50). A combination of Ham Steak, Bacon, Sausage & Sides. *BURPS*.

Enough said.

The Pork Ribs. RM24. I can’t really remember which style this was. But the tasty sauce and a good cut of both lean and fat got the thumbs up from both me & my fussy friend.

Their version of Bread & Butter Pudding, (RM8) may be an acquired taste by some. It is certainly not your run of the mill baked version, and it didn’t taste like one either. For starters, it is not too sweet & it doesn’t come with a thick custard layer. And the bread slices weren’t cut and layered in thick slices either. As you can see below, it is flat. I myself haven’t quite decided if it would be a favourite of mine Maybe another visit would help me make up my mind??

I remembered my first visit to SFS in Aug09, & the 50mins wait that followed our order, even though it was only 1130am.

We appeased part of our hunger with this; dry pan mee which was not the least memorable.

I almost changed my mind about the pan mee when my wan tan mee finally arrived.
It looked even less appealing and made the long wait seemed fruitless. Besides, I thought the portion was rather measly.

Though one is always preached not to judge a book by its cover, this one proved to be a spot on.

1st thing I must mention about is the mee. Perhaps to some, it is considered ‘Q’, a term used to describe the elusive consistency where the noodles are both elastic yet tender.
To me, it just was dry & hard to the bite.
The sauce that it was bathed in neither excites nor spurred the jaded tongue.

The famed char siew can be merited a ‘good’, DEFINITELY better than most, yes I agree, but certainly would not be my PERSONAL chosen choice should I have any char siew cravings.

The wan tan (pork dumplings) were nothing to shout about either. Well, at least the soup fared better than Famous Seremban Favourite’s.

I thought perhaps it was a bad idea to come on a weekend or maybe I’ve got a bad cut of char siew. Hence a re-visit is required. Or so I had vowed.

Anyhow, the dismal memory lingered on, & I never made it back.

But then again, when one is on the topic of char siew, the research is never complete if a comparison to the “other famed one” is not done.

So in Dec 09, I made it to THE Famous Seremban Favourites, with fellow foodie bangsar-babe.
This visit reminded me again that 747 or SFS, still awaits my 2nd visit.

The opportunity presented itself soon enough, when a friend told me of a decades old establishment in Loke Yew, named Hang Kee that serves the best char siew he had tasted. I immediately whisked him to Aman Suria and told him that these 2 char siew establishments has been supposedly the creme de la creme of KL char siew.

I then told him of my plan, to hop- eat on the “Char Siew Kai” (street of char siew) of Aman Suria, since there are 3 char siew outlets (another being the Char Siew Zhai) all within walking vicinity.

All in agreement, we started at 1030am at SFS. A tummy filler was ordered, & we braced ourselves for the notorious long wait.

So here I am back again in SFS/747 Char Siew shop.

Our tummy filler: A totally forgettable set of toast & eggs.

My friends was amazed at the crowd & I could feel their anticipation growing.

Anyhow, after a 35min wait, I find myself staring at almost the same sad looking plate of wan tan mee as I had in Aug09.

Well, I consoled myself, at least I can pass proper judgment now.

All of us dug in, and while they was pleased, some said they had tasted better.
Myself?
Same verdict. The mee was stringy & the sauce was nothing near of a worthy-praise.

I think the problem lies in the cut. Certain pieces were almost all fat, and the others were too lean. Perhaps if I have gotten well-balanced tiers of fat & lean cuts I might have enjoyed it better?
Anyhow, marinate & texture- wise, it was still good char siew.

So, tummy still rumbling, we ambled over to Famous Seremban Favourites, and repeated the same order.

Before that, let me rewind back to my 1st visit to Famous Seremban Favourites, where I had one of my mid-week lunch with bangsar-babe & Shum.

So here goes FSF, ROUND 1, in Dec09.

Bangsar-babe, Shum & I polished off bowls of Hakka mee, which to me was absolutely good to the bite & doused in the mixture of concoction of sauce that wafted of lard yet wasn’t as oily as the famous Pudu one.

We ordered a plate of char siew to share. It came with a small saucer of char siew sauce, which was a nice extra.

SOFT, GLORIOUS meltingly creamy fat with lean parts that didn’t require much chewing.

Heck, who are we kidding? One plate was like an appetiser. Hence the second plate.
This second portion was even better, simply cos it has well separated tiers of fat & lean meat.

Just for comparison, I took a picture of a single portion plate goes for RM4.50. Doesn’t look like much right? (this was someone else’s order by the way).
Do yourself a favour, just place an order of 2 straight up & save yourself the wait.

We added orders of Sui Kow, which wasn’t fabulous but edible.

The well-balance marinate, that was neither too sweet yet salty enough, gave the sticky shiny glaze that had many char siew connoisseurs drooling & moaning.
Parts of the caramelized crust at the edges of the char siew provided a pleasant smoky flavour.

The soya bean that you should NEVER order. Trust me.

There you have it, my 1st visit to FSF. The 2nd visit (below) is with my hop-eat friends, in continuation from where I left off after 747 (my 2nd visit above).

Our orders of wan tan mee took less than 15mins, and while it was packed with customers, I noticed that FSF maintains pretty good crowd control; ie orders were taken not long after you are seated (no frantic waving of hands needed), the food arrived in reasonably good time, & even payment was efficient.

The wan tan mee tasted so much better here. The smooth & SOFT yet springy noodles went great with the accompanying tasty mix of sauce, albeit a bit oily.

The char siew here won favours from my friends, and they declared it much much better than 747.

Bill recognised me from my first visit & came over to chat with us. He admitted that the noodles might not be consistent since it is cooked on the spot & their foreign workers are not that dependable. Which is why he is always in the shop overseeing the operations personally.
The char siew however, are under strict quality control since it is prepared beforehand.

He then added a separate plate of char siew for us.

Wonderful..

Luscious char siew with exquisite layers of fat.

Even the vinegared chilies & red chilli sauce is much better than SFS/747′s, although unnecessary. The fish ball soup is cooked with “ham choy” & hence tasted different from the wan tan soup base. The fish ball was bouncy enough, but lacked the fishy taste that bear testament of high ratio of fish meat used. The wan tan is not worth describing.

I bought packets of chicken rice here for lunch before. My advice is, stick to the char siew.

Random thoughts: I stared at this kid in amazement, and wondered if that would be what I might look like if I eat like this everyday ;p
I think he is the boss’s kid. Cute right???

Here a map for those who haven’t been here.
Bill, as you can see, is a highly educated fella, with all the BBA, B, M & whatnots on his cards.
But like he said, the best one that describes him is the 3 words below those titles. LOL!

I don’t think I’m qualified to say that FSF is the best in KL, since I have not tried as many char siew places as some bloggers I know.
I do opine that the char siew I had by Ah Khai; shop inside Simon’s Delight, opposite Sea View Coffee Shop in Paramount Garden bought by Ciki & alilfatmonkey for Potluck at Nigel’s is very good, though some find it a bit too soft.

Anyhow, if the final verdict is to be only between SFS vs FSF, then for me I would prefer FSF.

A quick and fast post this time since tomorrow is the weekend already.

Also cos we only had one dish before I got distracted by the Sun paper and dragged Unka to hunt for the next location as featured in METRO ;p
(this one is next next post ok!)

Back to our brekkie; the picture above pretty much sums up the breakfast platter, with one fat pork sausage, crispy slightly charred bacon and fluffy buttermilk pancakes.

Let’s start with the bacon.
Smoky, charred and crispy. Nice streaky layers of fat and meat. This is good, really good.

The sausage, now that’s another level of “good” altogether. I am still salivating thinking and looking at this pic now.

Should I say awesome? Lip smacking delicious?
I don’t know.
It’s just so so good!!

Look at the sausage above..

& imagine this..

Taut, crisp casing.
One bite.
Resistance….then………… the skin cracks.
Moist, sweet lava of meat juices burst into your mouth cavity.
Proceed to chew.
More juices, coupled with hot cheese and gritty smoky meat floods the sensory palate.
Savour & swallow with absolute satisfaction.

Hmmmm…
Note to oneself: I really need to know where they got their sausages from!

Having said all that, the rest of the platter wasn’t that drool-worthy. I find the scrambled eggs a bit overdone.

The coffee was generic.

And lastly, the pancakes failed to impress, it was a bit burnt at the sides and ain’t fluffy enough. I would say The Pink Sage does a better version.
Anyhow, Eve says the pancakes are meant to be that way. So I guess I will have to make a special request the next time I order their pancakes! No burnt edges for me please!

Aman Suria, an area alien to me until recent months, is suddenly such a delightful place.
Less parking woes, decent pricing for food (with the exception of Kayu) and lotsa new outlets to try (at least for me) makes this area my current favourite food haunt.

The Departure Lounge here is great for chilling out with a laptop, for the human traffic is considerable less compared to the Mt Kiara outlet. Likewise for JM Briyani which serves pretty decent nasi briyani.

Along this same row, Betty’s Midwest Kitchen finally opened several weeks ago.
Eve, whom I had acquainted from my Bellygood review outing, had told me of her plan to open her own restaurant when I met her at Food and Hotel Malaysia (FHM) 2009 earlier this year.

Not entirely familiar with “Midwest” food, I dragged 2 friends along as soon as I could once I saw the place was in business.

Yes yes..the food’s all porky goodness too.

I love these cute wall boards below.

The menu explains of the outlet’s concept..

Sitting area both inside with air conditioning and alfresco, with free WIFI. Yea!!

The open kitchen, the bar and the cashier counter.

A family run restaurant; Betty, the chef, mans the kitchen with her son, while Dad and Eve is in charge of front- line service.
All the recipes are originally midwest, as proclaimed by Betty, who had traveled & lived in the midwest of America for years with her daughter.

We didn’t order much that night since there were only 3 of us. Plus, we had a late 5pm lunch hence we settled for just 2 mains and 2 beers. Quiet and comfortable, it was a perfect place for a dinner meeting.

The Classical MidWest style Meatloaf, RM15.00, served with mash, peas and onions relish is their signature dish and highly recommended by Eve herself.

This was a really GOOD hearty dish!
Soft & moist, with the pork and beef juices oozing into my mouth with every bite, hhmmmm…I instantly regretted sharing..
Boy, if there’s a better meatloaf in town, please do tell me!

The mash is splendid, buttery smooth (though I do generally prefer the ones with bits of roasted skin swirled in) I don’t see a reason to complain about this version, especially with the bits of fragrant bacon on top.

We even polished off every single pea, for they are soft, fresh & sweet!!
Marvelous with the gravy, palatable even on its own really.
I wonder if these are Watties’? Sure aint those generic cheapo supermarkets brands.

It came with this beer sauce, which still reminisce strongly of alcohol, though the meatloaf is undeniably wonderful just on its own.

They have pork burgers on the menu, and never one to resist burgers, I forced my other dining partner to order it ;p

Pulled Pork Burger.
Shredded or ‘pulled’ pork, slow – roasted and braised in special sauce. Served in a bun with coleslaw and fries. RM12.

This somewhat reminded us of Chinese cuisine and my dining partner actually wondered aloud if he could ask for a bowl of rice to eat with this! LOL. That’s a chinese man for you!

Having said that, the flaky pork is flavourful, and the coleslaw was perfect in my books.
Lightly dressed, slightly tangy, fresh and crunchy, it’s just LOVELY really.

The way Midwestern-ers take their chilli sauce is with a dollop of mustard, I was told.

Personal attention from Betty herself. She enjoys going around and speaking to the guests whenever she could get herself out from the kitchen.
Yup, she personally sees to every dish that comes out from the kitchen. With such strict quality control, I certainly hope that the food remains consistent cos I definitely liked my meatloaf that night!

Dessert of the week was the apple crumble with ice cream that was again highly recommended by Eve herself.
Alas, my lack of exercise for the past month didn’t allow much room for indulgence, hence was duly turned down.
TS, however, who was neither concerned on his weight nor the time of the day, ordered a Frutti Ice Cream, RM6.50.
I stole a bite and concluded that the ice cream was nice and creamy, again not those cheapo brand ones.

2 Budweiser at RM24.00.
Eve said theirs is the only outlet that is allowed to display the Budweiser logo.

They do breakfast as well, but it is only available from 10am to 1pm on Sat and Suns.
I was told their pancakes are heavenly and their breakfast sets huge, “just like how an American breakfast should be” said Betty and eyeing me, added “You need someone to share it with you”.

Hurmphh.
She has no idea what a pig I am ;p

Betty’s Midwest Kitchen definitely got the thumbs up from me on my first visit.
I was keen for a re-visit and dragged Unka with me for their brekkie sets just last Sunday.
(Will post that review next!)

Meanwhile, you can check them out on their website – www.midwestkitchen.com.my, follow their tweets (My, more and more dining outlets have twitter accounts!) and join them on Facebook.
