Mornings at Astaka Taman Tun Sardon is a foodie’s dream.
There are so many stalls dishing out so many scrumptious food for breakfast that it’s a shame this place is not as well patronised as some of the famous outlets in town. I guess it’s location can be challenging to some; but if you can spare the time Astaka Taman Tun Sardon is really worth the effort.

Now if you’ve missed the morning session (my post on that is next!), fret not as Sulaiman chapati would keep you happily satiated for tea time. Besides Sulaiman, other options includes 4-5 stalls along the outer ring of food court selling fried spring rolls (popia goreng), fried snacks such as fishballs, etc as well as beverages stalls hawking soya bean and cincau.

But it was Sulaiman’s chapati that drew the crowd.

The roti jala was just decent but the chapati did justice to its reputation.
Thin, well puffed with a delightful char aroma (not charcoal but gas was used though), it was light yet with a pleasant chew. We mopped up copious amount of the sweet, spicy sambal sardin with every bite.
Sulaiman’s version of sardin sambal is thicker and slightly spicier than the version served at Waterfall Cafe Botanical Garden (another venue for superb chapati) but I personally preferred the Waterfall Cafe’s recipe as it has more complexity in terms of flavour. Stay tuned for my next post on that! 🙂

I thought the beef curry is better than the sardin sambal. For RM5.00 for 6 pieces of roti jala and the tasty, fresh curry with generous pieces of beef is a steal.

Chapati and Sambal Sardin (RM3.50).  Roti Jala (6 pieces) and Beef Curry (RM5.00). A bowl of Bubur Kacang (RM1.50).

Remember, keep Sulaiman Chapati in your Penang to- eat- list the next time you’re in my hometown! 😀

PS: This stall sells a mean Mee Jawa too so add a bowl if you have the stomach space.

I’m craving for a puffy flat wheat bread now, no thanks to you.
But seriously, where can I seek sardine Sambal in KL?

  2. Cal

Any luck with brickfields? Thats the area for all things Indian no?

Wow you’re really a gadget girl aren’t you! You have everything for well, everything! Even backing up on the go!

By the way, the chapatti does look delicious. Unlike the ones we get here, flatter, some parts uncooked and doughy.

I love chappati and roti jala!
This astaka place looks fabulous for breakfast and tea time indulgence.
