Singapore – Omakase Burger – the best beef burger

It took me 3 hours to find this place. 3 hours on MRT, bus and foot.
I was fuming pissed, hungry and worn beyond words by the time I stepped into the outlet.

The directions and the stated shuttle as per their site are inaccurate. In fact, if I haven’t tried following the directions there, I may have made it here without getting lost!

Calling the number didn’t help either. When I was lucky, I got to speak to a very helpful gentleman. But he couldn’t tell me the exact directions though I told him my exact MRT station. Anyhow, he managed to direct me to the Botanic Gardens MRT station which was near enough.

Then the few following calls after I reached the Botanic Gardens MRT was answered by a girl who was an absolute hopeless staff. I was literally stranded. Taxis ignored me. The bus drivers do not know where is “The Grandstand” nor Turf Club Road and every random stranger I asked do not have a clue where The Grandstand or Turf Club is.
Seriously? You guys are Singaporeans for heaven’s sake!

After an hour walking around lost, I managed to meet a very helpful store lady who actually used her shop PC to google and check on google maps the location of The Grandstand. By now I was nursing a bloody headache and feeling rather dizzy from fury and fatigue. Seeing my distress, she gave me specific directions from the bus number to the very landmark that I had to get down and the direction that I would have to walk.
To cut a long story short, I managed to get to The Grandstand on Turf Club Road after another 40 minutes, with about 25 minutes on these roads.

There were absolutely no signboards and I just walked on hoping that I got the right place. When I saw some shops in front of me, I nearly gasped in relief.

But no sign of Omakase Burger. I called the landline again, only to have the same girl answering and tell me to walk all the way to the end. I did.

So I called again. She finally said, oh, it’s inside the building. Sigh, why didn’t she said so earlier?

But I’m finally here!

I staggered to the counter in relief but my mood was still thunderous. Luckily the girl was not in sight or else I might have strangled her. The kind gentleman at the cashier counter told me to rest, gave me a quick recommendation for my meal, threw in a 10% discount and later added a serving of fries as I wolfed down my burger hungrily.

My order was the Deluxe Cheeseburger (SGD15.90 = RM39.75)  based on his recommendation.
I was too tired to argue. I sank onto a chair, charged my phone through the power socket available and massaged my throbbing head.

Once my order was keyed-in, I was given a buzzer and told to wait til it well, buzzes. It reminded me of Snowflakes back in KL.

When I went over to the counter to pick up my burger, my first reaction was dismay as the burger looked really tiny!

I did the obligatory shot of the insides of the burger; as you can see below.

And another shot (though I was shaking with hunger) just to show the texture of the patty. At this point I was impressed just from the looks of it.

Then I picked it up and took a big bite.

Oh my god, it was sinfully delicious!
The patty was so juicy that the moment I bite into it, the juices escaped and flowed down my fingers to my hands, dripped from my mouth and the wonderful beef, bun, onions, juicy mushrooms all assaulted my tastebuds with its incredible flavour. I chewed slowly; savouring the taste, so well – balanced (not salty or herb seasoned) and so succulent.

I forced myself to finish it slowly and I wished each bite lasted forever!

Frankly, RM40 for a beef burger is not cheap even for Singaporeans standards (SGD 15.90) but I would gladly pay. In fact, if I’m in Singapore, I might eat this every week! 😀

I found out later that eating it slowly might not be a good idea. The patty with the sauce eventually soaked up my lower bun forcing me to discard it as it was soggy beyond reason.

I stared at their board explaining the smash patty technique which I first heard of from myBurgerLab. So that explains why myBurgerLab burgers are so good as well, I thought.

But Omakase beef patties triumphs over myBurgerlab anytime, though myBurgerlab does offer a much more interesting selection of burger combinations.

Here’s my complimentary fries. I believe they were supposed to be truffle fries but there wer barely any hint of truffle in it. Anyhow I do not expect much for the price of SGD6.90. In fact, for the dismay faint aroma of truffle, they might as well do away with it.
Other options includes sweet potatoes, original french fries and cheese fries. Basing my judgement from the truffle fries alone, myburgerlab’s fries are fabulous by far.

More about the beef patty formula can be found on their site. I shall not repeat it here.
From the other blogs/online sites that I have read, it seems that former banker and founder of Omakase Burger created the recipe based on a banker’s methodical method of creating an Excel spreadsheet and trying almost 200 different combinations of meats to come up with their final winning burger recipe.
Guess sometimes an analytically and systematical mind works better than free form creative ones?

But boy, a banker. And if I’m not mistaken, the boys (or men?) behind myBurgerlab are engineers.
I think I should date more bankers and engineers. They don’t seem so boring after all. Heh! :DD
