Ramadhan Buffet – La Maison, Silka Maytower Hotel & Serviced Residences

This Ramadhan buffet at Maytower was one of my favourites last year. When I receive the preview invite few weeks back, I was ecstatic. Oh yes, flashback of the lamb, satay and the amazing assam grilled fish came to mind and I gulped down my drool in anticipation.

In fact, over dinner I was reminded of the video I did last year for the Ramadhan buffet! Here is it:

Unfortunately, I gave up doing videos this year. I barely have enough time to write; not to mention picture editing so I can’t imagine doing videos as well. 🙁

Anyhow, let’s look at what the Ramadhan buffet has in store for us this 2012. Admittedly, it was on a much shrunken scale in comparison to 2011. However, we were assured that this was merely a preview; and the actual Ramadhan buffet during the Ramadhan month will be a full blown affair of over 100++ dishes.

Looking back at my last year’s post, I realized the desserts section was as disappointing as ever. LOL!
Well, due feedback was given and I’m sure the chef will take heed.

Below: The rather weird bubur cha cha minus any yam or potatoes. This was similar as last year’s so perhaps this version is a specialty of the chef’s? Anyhow, it needs some getting used to!
The Jackfruit in Coconut Milk was reportedly decent though.

They do a rather creative if not bland version of a bread and butter pudding.

This B & B pudding was a tad dry and fortunately made bearable only by the chocolate chips.

If all fails, there’s always fresh fruits! 😀

Nevermind that the desserts wasn’t up to expectations; after all in buffets hits and misses are common. I recommend dousing your “sweet” sorrows with the ” fiery” curries.  All the delectable curries on the spread especially at the Assam Pedas which is a specialty of the chef here.

Sotong (Squid) Asam Pedas, Asam Pedas Daging, Asam Pedas Ekor Lembu, Asam Pedas Udang – all very lovely and it screams to be eaten with white rice!

Each pot was aromatic & explosively flavourful; a testament to the chef’s skill. The fish below was sweet and flaky; thus was an absolute delight to eat.

The prawn version.

Rendang. For those who are unfamiliar, rendang is Minangkabau (Indonesian ethic group) style of curry. It is a dry curry, where meat are stewed for long hours in coconut milk and spices till tender. What we sampled that night was lacking in the tender department but passed in terms of flavours.

We had a lovely array of Ketupat Palas, Ketupat and Lemang to pair the rendang and serunding (meatfloss – not pictured here) with.

And of course, how could anyone forget my favourite – THE LAMB!

We do not have a whole lamb on display this time, but 2 roasted legs of lamb was enough to get me beaming in anticipation. 🙂

The leaner cuts were a tad dry while the fattier cuts were thankfully better. A far cry from last year’s lamb, but decent nonetheless.

The hot mains followed suit and I enjoyed the Sambal Ikan Keli (catfish) the most as the creamy, sweet flesh married wonders with the spicy sambal.

Gulai Ikan Masin dengan Nenas – Salted Fish Curry with Pineapples. This is actually a very flavourful dish that I would encourage any foreigner to try. Imagine sweet tangy sweetness from the tropical pineapple, then the slight heat of the curry plus savoury brininess of the salted fish. Complex but delicious, that’s my assurance to you! 🙂
