Ramadan Buffet with Celebrity Chef, Jaafar Onn, at Checkers Café in Dorsett Regency Hotel

This was another buffet I sampled last year and waddled home burping heavily albeit happily. 🙂

I remembered the flavourful freshly brewed soups and the amazing dessert spread. This year, the desserts were even better, with an exceptional Tapai Cake (tapai is a type of fermented rice wine) that was surprisingly pleasant, given that the smell and taste of tapai is an acquired taste.

This cake delighted both in flavours and texture, with a distinct tapai smell but not overpowering so. The lingering tapai taste actually adds an interesting naunce to the character of the cake. I’m not a fan of tapai but I gave this 2 thumbs up!
That’s usually what I like to look out for in a buffet. Some familiar favourites are no doubt necessary but some new, maybe even funky items, whether it’s a curry, a cake or a hot dish  gave some buffets the edge to remain in the memory. Likewise, I would more keen to recommend and share with my readers as that’s something different to look our for.

Here’s another new cake creation entitled Kek Budaya Dorsett, a masterpiece by Badrol Hisham Mohd Ali, Dorsett Regency Hotel, Kuala Lumpur’s Pastry Chef. This cake is beautifully blended with distinctive Malay, Baba-Nyonya and Western flavours and the unique cake is layered with vanilla sponge, homemade fermented glutinous rice, and royal custard filling.

Yes, I think the desserts are good here at the Ramadhan Buffet at Dorsett Regency Hotel, KL!

Here’s the bountiful dessert spread during my makan session here.

Ramadhan- Dorsett Regency KL-068

I daresay there were more than 50 kinds of dessert alone. Some just brings the kid out in you, such as these ones on sticks and cones.

Western desserts such as cakes and tarts were just as well prepared as their assortment of traditional kuih-muih.

Regardless if it’s a simple one like the carrot cake below, or a classic one like a chocolate cake and cheesecakes, most of the desserts here didn’t disappoint!

Here are the local Malay and Nyonya kuih, which I must say was just as adeptly prepared.

Dodol – a sticky glutinous rice cake made from hours of stirring over low fire to attain the smooth, sticky consistency.

Soupy desserts came in the form of Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk.

And for durian lovers – the  Serawa Durian was convincingly pungent.

Bubur Cha-cha.

Those with a sweet tooth are spoiled for choice for sure; for there was even a chocolate fountain!

For me, the ais kacang is a standard accompaniment to my Ramadhan meals, just as essential as my lamb.

Ramadhan- Dorsett Regency KL-093

Speaking about lamb, now you see it….

Ramadhan- Dorsett Regency KL-004

….now you don’t!

Ramadhan- Dorsett Regency KL-108

The lamb is no doubt a popular item in a Ramadhan buffet. I personally won’t pay more than RM50 for a Ramadhan buffet if there wasn’t lamb offered! 🙂
The same can be said for the grilled satays and seafood.

But the limelight was on the hot dishes by flamboyant Chef Jaafar Oon, a well-known culinary master when it comes to local delicacies.

Curries, rendang, assam pedas, masak cili padi, sambal, masak lemak, kunyit and etc, you name it, he cooks them. We had aromatic briyani,  flavoursome curries and rich, freshly simmered soups that evening.

These food stations are located outside of the cafe and I almost missed them. Good thing I walked around after my 5th round of the buffet! *burps*!

i’d like to try the tapai cake! luckily tapai is considered officially as halal 😀

    1. rebeccasaw

It’s “wine”, wonder how it qualifies as halal 😛
And why the people here in Peninsular are not making it by gallons!

      1. isaac976

Tapai is considered halal in the muslim society because as told that even eaten at a given quantity you will not get drunk (so that is considered Halal)

      2. rebeccasaw

Oh really? But I seen drunk people in Sibu, Kuching after they drink tuak.. oh wait.. that’s tuak.. not tapai.. hahah .. #fail
