Ramadan Buffet 2014: Buka Puasa @ Eccucino, Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur

It’s that time of the year again; the crazy non-stop feasting that begins at approximately 7.30pm for 30 days. Well, not for those fasting (maybe), but definitely for those who join in the Ramadan spirit of breaking fast at pasar ramadan and buka puasa buffets.

I’m a guilty culprit myself, though I start earlier than most since I have the privilege of previewing these venues! 🙂

At Prince Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Eccucino is transformed into a local bazaar with live action stalls.
What we have here is a nice mix of international offerings of cold stations, appetizer spread, seafood on ice and the local repertoire of kampung (local) dishes significant with the Ramadan fasting month.

Needless to say this remains the highlight of the buffet; smoked salmon, fresh seafood on ice and oysters.

But of course we checked out the traditional spread as well.
As with all buka puasa buffets I start with the roast lamb. Eccucino’s was juicy and good with or without the accompany sauce.
I requested for both the inner pink cuts as well as a few slices nearer to the skin so I could taste the marinate and also the natural flavour of the lamb.
In fact, if the lamb is good, sauces or dressings are redundant, don’t you agree?

Next is the grill. Select your seafood and meats and have them cooked on the spot for you.
Well marinated and fresh, do take advantage of these!

Grab a few sticks of satay too while you’re at it. Take your pick of beef or chicken or grab a few sticks of both.

Chef has a few recommended dishes for the guest.
Besides the Sup Tulang and traditional Bubur Lambuk, he has painstakingly prepared Laksa Johor, a wonderful traditional dish that is coconut and fish base noodle soup and uses spaghetti instead of rice noodles.
While sup tulang, satay, live grill stations and roast lambs are staple for a Ramadan buka puasa buffet, Chef has decided to offer something a bit of the ordinary though the preparation labour intensive. Thanks Chef! 🙂

Ah, let’s not forget his briyani too.

It is important that a buffet offers a good variety to satisfy everyone.
The hot food section in Eccucino offers a decent mix of western, Chinese, Indian and Malay selections; all served in small qualities, kept warm and replenished regularly.

On whether you should start a buffet with desserts or otherwise will remain debatable. I for one, love ice cream. And these peanut pancakes!

The selection of local desserts and cakes and fruits are a bit of the meager side (what to do, I’m a greedy pig) and pretty standard.

My favourite that evening was Roti Canai Durian. Yes, with real durian pulp.

And having a dollop of durian flesh served with it was icing on, well, roti canai! 🙂

Looking back at my Ramadan/Buka Puasa buffet list of past year (you can access it here –> https://www.rebeccasaw.com/list-of-buka-puasa-buffets-in-kl-to-buka-puasa-this-2013/) I realized that this is my first visit to Eccucino for their buka puasa spread.
Well, I hope to see a bigger spread in the coming years.

After sampling about 20 buffets annually for years, I can tell you that ramadan buffets are almost similar everywhere EVERY YEAR.
Prices goes up every year though!
Anyhow, this list (https://www.rebeccasaw.com/list-of-buka-puasa-buffets-in-kl-to-buka-puasa-this-2013/) will give you a general idea of how each Ramadan buffet/buka puasa buffet is like in each of the listed venues.

Lastly, I hope to see F & B teams from hotels/restaurants starting to think out of the box and offer a unique experience to their diners; whether it is the food or the overall experience.

    Woah.. more ramadan delectables!
    I’m envious now.

Durian roti canai? In a hotel?

  3. Sukarno

I like Malaysian food, especially the curries – rendang is my fav.

  4. Camelia

I’m not impressed with Prince’s F & B outlets either. The chinese and Japanese restaurants are just as mediocre.
