Pangkor Laut Resort, Perak – My review of the Residents Package – Value for money!

My apologies for the abrupt ending to my previous post. The last week has been hell but thank god I scrapped through. 🙂

I’m now in Taiwan for a trip that I nearly cancelled. Things worked out better on the very morning of the flight, so 3 hours before the flight, I decided that situation is stable enough for me to leave.

So without further ado, here’s the continuation from where I left off; right at that moment where we were having lunch at Chapman’s Bar on Day 2.

Chapman’s Bar sits on the beach Emerald Bay and serves a variety of cuisine.  The setting here is casual and the whole dining experience was more about enjoying the sea breeze with your toes in the sand than the actual food.

I went for their signatures; namely the Chicken Chop and the Braised Duck Noodles. Here’s the deal under the Resident Package – each diner gets to order 1 of each main, appetiser and dessert; basically a complete 3 course meal. The same T & C applies for every mean here; any additional drinks other than water is subject to charges.

For the 2 of us, we shared 2 appetisers and 2 mains.
Gado-gado. RM35.
– an Indonesian salad served with peanut sauce, accompanied by deep fried spring rolls.

Citrus shrimp salad. RM35.
Dried shrimp and tambun pomelo salad drizzled with sweet-sour tamarind dressing.

Chef Ho’s Chicken Chop. RM45.
Boneless Chicken thigh, breaded and fried til golden, served with french fries, baby carrots, green peas and Chef Ho’s special sauce.

Braised Duck Noodles. RM45.
Egg noodles with duck leg braised in chinese herbal broth, a famous Bidor town specialty.

Options of desserts were Sago Gula Melaka RM35, Bubur Kacang Hijau RM25 and daily selection of ice -cream at 2 scoops for RM25.

Taking into consideration of the cost of the meal, we were really glad that the Resident Package offers complimentary meals throughout the trip!

Since we were already at Emerald Bay, I took the opportunity to go for a swim. 😀

The waves were really strong and the changing tide was swift! One moment the sea were pretty far out and shortly after the waves crashed right to where Chapman’s Bar and the reclining lounge chairs were!

There’s was a beach….

….strong waves coming in……

…and the sea takes over the shore!

I nearly got washed off the rock by the force of the waves!

The sea was a lovely emerald green; as befitting of the name of the beach.

After much beach play time, we headed for dinner.

Dinner was at Feast Village, the same restaurant for breakfast. The special dinner menu for those under the Resident Package is whimsical and Malay traditional set, served in a platter, with individual portions of the dishes to be eaten with rice.

Below: Nasi Hidang Dua – Daging Kurma, Kacang Panjang, Udang Masak Merah, Ikan Goreng Kunyit and Kambing Masala.

Nasi Hidang Satu – Ayam Rendang, Kari Udang, Ikan Masak Cili Padi, Sambal Terong and Sotong Goreng.

I loved the presentation.
Putting myself in the shoes of a foreigner, I realized how appropriate and helpful such sets are to inculcate the flavours and knowledge of local Malay cuisine.
Each sets includes rice and not just one, but a few different type of meat, fish, seafood and vegetables. Portions are generous and most importantly, the food tasted as good as as the presentation.
For RM85++ per set/pax, this was again complimentary under the Resident Package. Wrapping up the beautiful dinner was a selection of desserts from the counter where each diner gets to select ONE dessert, including the ice-cream. Apologies but the pictures of desserts didn’t quite turn out well so I omitted them from this post.

A sizeable selection of wines are available but of course that’s billable.

With a rounded belly, I waddled back to my comfy King-sized bed. :DD

The next day, I tried to assuage my guilt with a complimentary yoga session. Executing a sun salutation pose on a pavilion over the gentle lapping waves and crisp breeze of the sea totally beats the air conditioned gym studio anytime!

Check out time was 12pm. A quick breakfast later, I packed up and got ready to leave. The speedboat ferried all of us to Marina Bay Jetty, where the car was parked safely the last few days.

Oh Pangkor Laut Resort, what a lovely time it has been! Thank you and please remain as beautiful as you’re now for many years to come! 🙂

    Hye Rebecca.
I really love reading your posts. I love the details, and plenty of pictures for us to drool too 🙂 Very excellent blog.
I do have a few questions to ask about Pangkor Laut tho,as I’m dying to go there for my honeymoon. It’s regarding the staffs. I have had many bad experiences before when staying at expensive resorts like this with my family. We’re only a middle-class family, but my dad really want us to value travel experiences no matter how cheap or lavish the places are,so once a year we would be going to a resort almost similar as this. But to our dissapointment, most of the places we stayed at,the staff treated us with such coldness almost arrogant behaviour like we don’t deserve to be staying there ( I guess the staffs have some sort of skills to differentiate the strata and how much money you have). After been to many hotels,I know how to evaluate the politeness of the staffs, and if they considered us as poor or not. No smiling faces, and some don’t even respond when we ask them directions or how to do this and that etc. but they would smile as soon as a guest wearing expensive-looking cloth or caring a designer handbag pass by them. It’s from my personal experience..SO here goes my big worries.I’m going to get married soon to a very humble man.He comes from a struggling family, and only went for a short holiday once, before his dad past away. I really want to give him a special gift,a romantic honeymoon in Pangkor Laut. My concern is that how the staff there will treat us,as my husband-to-be is not used to this kind of places and doesn’t speak English very well. When we dine at restaurants he’s not confident to ask about the menus,etc.. But he’s very friendly generally,he just feels a bit down at expensive places. I know these questions sound unrelated and boring, but I wanna make sure the honeymoon would be the sweetest experience for him and for us to relax and enjoy our time. As I do not want him to lose self-esteem because he’s not rich and definitely doesn’t want our mood to be spoilt by rude arrogant staffs. I know I can do all the work, like checking-in and ordering the food, but being a gentleman that he is,he feels that it’s his job. SO can you rate their service in term of friendliness and how helpful they are? Do they treat all guests equally? And do they entertain your questions even if it’s just out of curiosity? If your review is excellent I would book right away. But I might want to consider other places if the staffs aren’t helpful enough.
Sorry for the super long comment.
I hope you can help me in deciding, as Pangkor Laut is gorgeous but afraid if they are unfriendly towards certain people, like us.
    Thanks in advance 🙂

Oh my Juliana! I’m so sorry that my reply is late! As you may know I was in the Malaysia Tourism Hunt the last 1 week.
Congrats dear on your marriage! And YES, PLR is excellent. The service is really up to par. The service staff are mostly local so I don’t foresee any problems with communication. I so sad to hear of the double standards that you have experienced but I doubt it will happen here. I saw a LOT of locals when I was here, but there were a number of foreigners too, but everyone was accorded the same level of warmth and assistance. Pangkor Laut resort is One Island One Resort. So you wont have any problems getting around!
I do hope you have a memorable stay and please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance! You have my email – [email protected].
