Noble House, Jalan Delima KL – Chinese New Year menu 2014

Becky’s 1 Minute Summary:
What: Porky outlet. One of the top fine dining Chinese restaurant in KL serving Chinese gourmet creation and delicacies.
What to order here: This review is focused on their 2014 CNY set menus so do refer to the menus and prices in the attached menu below.
I favoured the cod fish above all and the yee sang is really good; loved the added luxe touch of truffles and the fresh ingredients used.
Overall experience:  Expect premium ingredients, aesthetically pleasing dishes and a good balance of modern and old time classics on the menu. This is my 1st meal at Noble House and the infusion of artistic touches for both food presentation and preparation does make the culinary journey here a feast for the senses.

Mention the “Oriental Group” and most locals would go “Oh, I’ve heard of it before…”. Visions of chinese style banquet dining comes to mind and its outlet at Jaya 33 Oriental Pavilion could be by far the most recognised outlet of this group.
But do you know that the same group operates 9 restaurants? They are Noble House & Noble Banquet, The Ming Room (BSC), Maju Palace at Maju Junction Mall, Oriental Pavilion at Jaya 33, Oriental Banquet (Section 19), The Han Room (Gardens MV) and Oriental Viva in Viva Home Shopping Mall on Jalan Loke Yew.

Since the opening of their 1st outlet in 2000, Oriental Group of Restaurant has established itself to be the top restaurant in each of the areas it operates. I have heard strong and positive recommendations from friends of Oriental Pavilion (especially for its dim sum), The Han Room and I had personally dined at The Ming Room a few times myself.

And today I had the opportunity to meet the mastermind Chef Justin Hor and sit through a 8 course lunch with him and some media friends.
Chef Justin had consistently been crowned many titles during his working career and I was suitably impressed at his achievements. Furthermore, he is still so young!

For those who have been inquiring, the Chinese New Year menus for 2014 are as below. I would like to particularly highlight on the “Individual Menu” which allows a minimum of 2 pax to enjoy a 6 courses meal starting from RM128++ to RM688++ /per pax.
I thought this is a great initiative since there would be couples, or perhaps just son & mum (example), or close knit group of friends who prefer small gatherings and lou sang sessions without the need to hunt for 8-10 pax just to fill up a table.

For our lunch that afternoon, we were treated to the “Grilled Salmon Belly & White Truffle Vegetables Yee Sang” (RM138++ per table of 10).

This yee sang is currently my top pick this year for its use of fresh and whole ingredients. I spied fresh purple cabbage, pamelo, raisins, lettuce, cucumber, chinese cabbage, mandarin peel, jicama, carrots, celery, sesame, peanuts and lastly, the ubiquitous crackers.
Fabulous, I had thought. Less of the coloured pickled stuff and more wholesome greens. In fact I would skip the crackers too if I could.

The smell of truffle wafted through the air as we tossed in exuberance of the upcoming year of the Horse. The tossing combined the ingredients, sauces and oil nicely resulting in platefuls of flavoursome yet healthy yee sang with the highlight being the crunchy, firm salmon belly.

This is a yee sang I wouldn’t mind having multiple servings of. Would you? 🙂

The 2nd dish was another favourite of mine that day. Crispy Iceland Cod Fish with Mandarin Orange Cubes (RM18++/pax) is a wonderful reminder of the upcoming festive season. The tang of the dish, the sunny orange hue and the overall presentation bought a smile to my face. It is such an appropriate Chinese New Year dish!
The fish was faultless and the sharp, sweet citrus sauce complements it well. For added dimension of texture and taste, pickled onions and lemongrass and roasted cuttlefish topped each slice.

Our deluxe lobster went through a fusion preparation that day. Pieces of chewy Shanghai rice cakes (tasted almost similar to Tteokbokki; the Korean rice cakes) were cooked in a sourish, spicy kimchi-like sauce with the lobster.

A loose comparison would be similar to labelling this as “korean rendition of the classic sweet and spicy chinese stir fry preparation“.
Braised Boston Lobster with Shanghai Rice Cake & ‘Kimchi’ (RM33++ per 100g).

The next few items steered towards the classical Chinese dishes. Braised Stuffed Money Bag with Dried Oyster & ‘Fatt Choy’  (RM48++/portion) would elicit a nod of approval from the matriarch of the family. So would the Braised Six Treasures Chicken in Wok (RM98++ each).

I find both rather ordinary, no doubt well prepared but not entirely creative. But pardon me as I was spoiled earlier with kimchi, truffle and the superb cod fish so I had started to expect modern, fusioned preparations and was suddenly bought back to earth with these classical ones.
The money bags consisted of Japanese beancurd puffs stuffed with pork and prawn paste plus a fat, big dried oyster from China while the 6 treasures stuffed within the chicken cavity are a variety of mushrooms, arrowroot, wax liver sausages, chestnuts, bamboo shoots, Korean dried oysters and pig intestine.

Stir-Fried Shank’s Tendon with ‘Seng Kua’ & Wax Meat (RM58++/portion). I enjoyed the simplicity of this dish and its mild flavours. The shank was adeptly prepared; soft and chewy while the ‘seng kua’ and wood fungus contributed differing textures to the dish.

Stir-Fried Glutinous Rice with Whole Abalone in Pumpkin (RM48++/pax).
This is another pretty dish! The cute pumpkins are imported from Taiwan and has a lovely smooth texture. I scraped its sweet flesh to mix with the glutinous rice and ate everything together.
The abalone served are imported canned Chilean abalones which are favoured for it concentrated flavour.

Spinach with Yam & Chinese Sausage in Claypot (RM28++/portion). One must not forget the fibres of course. And the spinach tasted better with minced pork, mushrooms, wax sausages (everything taste better with wax sausages!) and taro.

Congratulations again to the Oriental Group for their many well deserved accolades and I look forward to more good meals at their restaurants.
If you’re seeking a venue which offers a good balance of modern and old time classics on the menu and infusion of artistic touches for both food presentation and preparation then the Oriental Group of restaurants would be an ideal choice!
