New vegetarian burgers – Tofu Burgers at myBurgerLab PJ!

Most frequently asked question to date since I posted on my social networks that I have tried tofu burgers at myburgerlab: How does it taste like??
My reply: Like TOFU lorr!

Heck, what sort of answer did you expect?
It’s juicy, it’s moist, it’s tasty? It’s TOFU for goodness sake! 🙂

But dress them up with kimchi, cheese, sauces, jalapeno and it’s as tasty as any other burgers.
Ok, maybe not. Nothing beats juicy red meat you say?

Aww.. come on, give the poor tofu a break ok? It’s tofu. So it tasted like tofu. The kind you eat in chinese cooking/steamboat. The firm white type. With a mild delicate taste of, well, SOY.

Which makes it a blank canvas and a pretty easy ingredient to pair with other components in any food group. In fact it’s so versatile that you can opt to switch ANY of the burgers on the existing myBurgerLab menu to a tofu version if you wish.

Anyhow I’m not going to write a long ass review on my Raya day. I’m just going to tell you that overall, each and every burger I bought tasted GOOD to me. All 4 variations; the kimchi, the spinach, the Kick-in-your -Face and the Spicy Hawaiian.

Kimchi Tofu Burger. Homemade kimchi by one of the mBL geeks. Not bad, not bad at all.
This is rather clever actually; if tofu works in kimchi soup, why not in a burger?

Spicy Hawaiian.

Kick-in-your -face:

Spinach.

And my favourite from the 4?
The SPINACH one. The fact that I love spinach probably played a role. 🙂

Now if you’re going to eat an tofu burger with a mindset of “urgh, all burgers should be meat based“, then obviously you have already brainwashed your mind to tell you that a tofu burger won’t taste good.

I’ll advise you to just think of it as another variation of burger; as an option to the boring grilled capsicums, zucchini and aubergines sandwiches and the done-to-death mushrooms burgers.
Just enjoy it as it is, and I trust that you will actually find it well, enjoyable! 🙂

Based on their FB page, the tofu patties contains soy bean, salt & calcium sulfate and the geeks at mBL had infused the tofu with a Herbed Soy Sauce mix to give it a more flavourful punch.
To be frank I find the tofu nice, not entirely plain but with all the added condiments I can’t ascertain if there were any herb, soy sauce or whatsoever infusion.

For verdict other than my own, I know of 2 persons who had tried the tofu burgers; one a hardcore carnivore and another a pure vegetarian and both had given their stamp of approval. 🙂

Disclaimer:
The kim chi and spinach versions are my favourites but both are not on the menu yet as the mBL geeks are still working on improving the flavours.
You can SUBSTITUTE any of the burgers on myBurgerLab’s menu to a TOFU version for the original price of the burger. OR you can opt to protein-ised (yes, I know there is no such word 😉 ) your burger by adding a slab of tofu for RM4.

So who’s up for a tofu burger? I ate 4 (yes, sparing only 1 for Damien though he did took a few bites from the other 4) and I don’t mind more!
I think the queue may not be so annoying during the Raya holidays (*fingers crossed*) so let’s go? 🙂

Tofu, watermelon, lychee. Now that doesn’t seem to match does it?
I’m talking about the water balloon by the way..

I would like the kimchi one!

Clever of them to keep thing fresh with innovative fillings for the burger. I like their social shares; upbeat, polite and sometimes tongue in cheek.

  12. Cass

    Is it gluten free?

  13. Jacqueline

    Tofu burgers! That’s a first!

Tofu + cheese + all that sauce = not quite as healthy or diet friendly after all! 😉
