New Food Menu @ WATAMI Japanese Casual Restaurant, Paradigm Mall

I recalled my first meal at Watami. It was in Pavilion KL, few weeks after their opening. I remembered looking at their menu and loving the options I see. We ordered a teppanyaki style beef, a rice pot with salmon in it and I actually started my meal with the milk pudding! *will update with pictures if they are ever found

It was a good meal and I was left with a good impression.

Not long after, Watami opened a branch in 1 Utama Shopping Centre. With such close proximity to my house, I was there soon enough and this time I had a salad, another rice pot which both my dining partner and I concluded was good and worth the price paid.

Today, I’m back to review their new menu. Considering how my previous visits had been favourable, I was sure that I will inspired with their new creations.

BARIUMA TEBA KARAAGE  –RM 14.90.
Crispy Fried Chicken Wing with Special Sauce. Now, why would Watami (considering their rather expansive menu) add an ordinary albeit very adeptly fried chicken wings into their menu is beyond me. It is kids-friendly; that I have to admit. Do note that you’re paying for the wing portions only, no drummettes!

KANI TAPPURI CREAM CROQUETTE RM 15.90(2 Pcs), RM 8.90(1 Pc).
Crabmeat Cream Croquette. Again, this was adeptly fried resulting in non-greasy and crisp skin with a pleasant creamy crab filling within. I’m a fan of croquette but I prefer the potato wrapped ones.

Watami’s rice pots are my staple order whenever I dine here.
But I’ll give the KANI KAMAMESHI – RM 24.90Crab Meat Pot Rice a skip though. I couldn’t detect any crab meat (but if the crabmeat they meant was the crabsticks then yes there were plenty of those but RM24.90 for a pot of rice with crabsticks??) within and overall the flavours were too sodium-fied for me.

If you have dined at Watami before then you would be familiar with their rice pot serving “procedures“.
Served covered on a “stove”, diners are advised to allow it cook for 20 minutes at the table before adding in the provided toppings. Proceed to self-stir and meld together the ingredients which consequently flavours the rice. This is what makes Watami’s rice pots so addictively good!

SALMON SASHINI DONRM 22.90Salmon Sashimi Rice.
I love raw salmon! This was accompanied with their special seafood sauce but since the salmon served was already glazed with it I didn’t feel it was necessary to add more. Too much sauce can be an overkill.

The best dish of the night? The WAFU TOUBAN GYU STEAKRM27.90.

Self-Grilled Beef Short Ribs with impressive marbling.

Sizzle some butter on the touban (the black ceramic plate) and start with the potatoes and pumpkin. Once the heat is regulated, place the meat and cook as long as you like. Mine was a mere 5 seconds on each side and pop it goes into my mouth; medium rare and succulent! 🙂

The TOKYO GYUDON (RM 22.90) – Beef Rice Bowl With Hot Spring Egg in Tokyo-Style was another winning dish; chockful of ingredients and savoury flavours. In my opinion, a poached/soft boiled egg (as long as the yolk is runny) goes superbly with any rice dish. Yes, I’m an egg fan as you can tell.

Salty for me but fine for everyone else. I blame my palate.

Here are some of the must-order beverages in Watami. I personally recommend the Purple Potato Smoothie, though in reality isn’t a very good choice for dinner as it is very filling! Watami’s Mojitos (yes with alcohol) and Green Citrus drinks are popular too.

For desserts we sampled the new SHIRATAMA CREAM ANMISTSU DUMPLING (RM11.90) – Maccha Ice-Cream & Anmitsu Dumpling and the CHOCOLATE BANANA IN TOAST BOX  (RM16.90) – Banana & Chocolate In Toast Box. I’ll stick to Watami’s fabulous milk pudding, thank you. 🙂

My personal recommendations for Watami?
Start with their delicious salads, get the beef and stick to the rice pots. Be sure to order the rice pot with salmon/chicken/unagi in it for better value for money. Watami serves quality sashimi so do consider that if you’re game for fresh seafood.
As for the rest – pizzas, ramen, tempura and skewers, I’m not of authority to recommend since I haven’t tried them myself! 🙂

Ooo. Looks good. I was about to go in for a quick bite last week but didn’t do so after seeing the prices. Now, I might reconsider. 😛

Prices are still high in my opinion. That’s why i recommend to order the seafood/meat if you order the rice else it’s pretty small portion and you’re eating sauce and rice only!

  5. Sean

tokyo gyudon for me! wonder if can request two eggs instead of one, heheh 😀

  6. Andreas

    Much better than Pasta/Sushi Zanmai.

Prices higher too isn’t it? Anyhow the menu here is more expansive too

  7. Stacy

I quite like it here but same as you, I find some of the dishes overseasoned!
