JOHOR FOOD: Restaurant ZZ Sup Tulang – Good stuff!

Tonight is my last night for my Johor-Singapore Firefly trip.
And it is tonight that I finally got to savour some local Johoreans cuisine, a delightful respite from the past few days of hotel buffets and common Malay cuisine.

On the menu tonight is Laksa Johor, Sup Tulang and Mee Rebus Tulang!
This was my first time seeing chunky bones sticking out from a plate of noodles. And the amazing thing is, there’s not 1, BUT a minimum of 2-3 bones per plate!

Such novelty. I don’t understand why we can’t have this in KL too. Just combine Sup Tulang and Mee Rebus right?? A plate of this is RM7 for Mee Rebus Tulang, and RM9 for Mee Rebus Tulang + Daging (meat). Pretty reasonable I’ll say!
Some of us ordered the original Sup Tulang which we can have on its own or with an added plate of rice.
Each murky, slurpilicious bowl of rich, aromatic broth came with a straw for the convenience of extracting the revered, creamy bone marrow. We cleaned the bones of any attached meat and sucked the bone dry. Ah, satisfaction! :DD

Restaurant ZZ Sup Tulang is a great place to sample a variety of Johor specialities.  Also available are Thai – style dishes, seafood and a variety of meat and greens to go with rice. Western choices includes lamb chops and the works. Ramli Burger and Satay are popular too.

The crowd peaks during breakfast, lunch and dinner. The little bamboo huts and gazebo that make up this outlet provided the dining area. Guests are seated on chairs while some others who prefers the “kampung” crossed legged style took the low tables.

In case you’re wondering, the soup is produced from mutton. Though I did find it a bit salty, it was nevertheless rich in flavour with a peppery punch and with a strong herbs aftertaste.

My choice of main was the Laksa Johor (RM4), a thin curry based bowl of pasta noodles generously topped with fine fish meat and a dollop of piquant spicy sambal.

It was utterly delicious, especially with a quick dash of lime and thorough mixing of the sambal (chilli paste). Very low – frills, each serving is basically noodles with onions a minced fish meat. I appreciate the fact that they didn’t overcook the noodles; which remained firm to the bite.

Service was decent even though it was a Saturday night and it was almost full house at the time of our dinner. As we walked out at 9.45pm, there were still a constant stream of customers walking in.

I have my fair share of Sup Tulang/Sup Gearbox in Penang and KL. However, the ones I had at those states were thinner in consistency and “greener” in colour. This one is seems to be of an entirely different recipe altogether. Perhaps this is why it is uniquely Johorean? 😀

From the bill I realized there were 2 other branches of  Restaurant ZZ Sup Tulang in Johor Bahru itself. Apparently this is their original outlet. Now, I wonder if they would consider inter-state operations in the future? Let’s hope they start one in KL!
