Humble Beginnings’ Mille Crepes – Bangsar & Austin Chase outlets

Mille crepes are pretty “elusive” in KL. The popular (and likely the only few) outlets that is synonymous with mille crepes are the infamous Nadeje, which is in Melaka, or Food Foundry in Happy Mansion, PJ Section 17.

I have tried both; and unfortunately the pictures are missing at the moment so there will probably be no posts on them. LOL.

Anyhow, I first realized there is another option for mille crepes in KL when I walked past a small florist shop in Telawi, Bangsar.

“Humble Beginnings” says the forlorn lone bunting standing at the corner of the small florist shop. Me being me, I made enquiries immediately, only to find out that this is just a pick up point for WHOLE cake orders, and there are no retail purchases available on the spot. Hence then my hope of sampling Humble Beginnings mille crepes vanished.

Until recently that’s it.
Guess what? Humble Beginnings’ mille crepes are now available by slice in Austin Chase at Gardens, Mid Valley & Sunway Giza!

Yup, although Austin Chase does not stock the whole repertoire of Humble Beginnings’ mille crepes, the 4 -5 varieties available is enough for you to have an idea of HB’s mille crepes.

The Swiss Chocolate Velvet is a chocolate lover’s dream. Layered with decadent chocolate cream & with additional chocolate bits in between the layers, this was forkfuls of sinful scrumptiousness.

The French Vanilla, on the other hand, was all fragrant vanilla and delicately pristine. Start your mille crepe experience with this, and be bowled over by its luscious and silky smooth cream.

The Peach & Passion fruit uses the same vanilla base, but with supplement of thin slivers of fruits in between layers. Opt for this if you are craving for a mellifluous fruity flavour in your mille crepes.

Mille Crepes are works of perfection. Assembling one is a tedious task, and requires much concentration to keep each layer perfectly symmetrical and spread with the right amount of vanilla custard & fresh cream to ensure evenness in the final product. For the uninitiated, “mille” means a thousand, though now mille crepes comes in realistic layers of 20 or so.

It is then not surprising that such a delicate dessert originated from the French. The name Mille Crepe is given because the cake resemble a “thousand” layers of crepe stacked together; a layer of crepe, spread with a coat of cream, another layer of crepe, another flim of cream and the process is repeated til the last top layer is put into place.

Rebecca, the French Vanilla is RM13.90, not RM14.90. 😛

  2. ai wei

    not cheap!
but they have lots of flavours hor

  3. I still remember making the mille crepe about 4 years ago. Took me about 3 hours to complete it, and it wasn’t a pretty sight. I’d rather pay to get one now! hehe.

    1. rebeccasaw

For a slice yes. So tedious. mostly will turn out like a tent right!!

  4. Michelle Chin

This is the western version of the thousand layer cake! hahaha.

    1. rebeccasaw

I think the French invented this first right? Hahaha

  5. Chong

Finally… A place that I can buy one slice instead of one whole thing. Hehe. Wanted to try ’em when I saw it last time in The Gardens but I felt weird to order cakes only without drinks. LOL.

    1. rebeccasaw

They got a promo now.. buy a cake and mille crepe for err… can’t remember ;p

  6. Sean

oreo cookies cream, peanut butter and reese’s surprise sound like the three most interesting flavors! hopefully those flavors will be available by the slice eventually too!
millecrepe with some nice, warm milk, that’s the best combo! this is one of those rare food items that i wouldn’t need to pair with any cocktails or alcohol (though maybe an alcohol-laced millecrepe, with kahlua or something inside, might taste great too!) 😀

    1. rebeccasaw

Nadeje has alcoholic ones! I rmbr buying a rum & raisin before!
Damn.. I really need to find those pics of my Nadeje mille crepes…

  7. Leo

Yay!Since I go to Mid Valley often, I could order the mille crepe from Austin Chase while sipping a cup of hot coffee :yahoo: chocolate would be my choice!

    1. rebeccasaw

Oh! I can imagine you doing so now! The austin chase there is so cosy too! They got a library of books too u know!

  8. kruel74

    1. rebeccasaw

Ahh.. sounds like a fabulooooous idea. Wait ar.. I go learn first! Not for makin the cake, but a good exercise in patience for me! ROFL.

  9. fatboybakes

hmmm, i cant say i really dig the mille crepe, though the original vanilla one i had from food foundry was quite nice. definitely wont find me making it, its 30 steps too many…RM14 for that is okay la, considering the labour that is involved…

    1. rebeccasaw

Actually yes. Most cakes that I eat are in the range of RM12 – Rm18 anyways. And this is damn filling.
Come to think about it, it’s cheap! 😉

    1. rebeccasaw

Oh, this is not from the Sect 17 one (as mentioned frm your blog post).
This one is very creamy and a bit rich..
Humble Beginnings is in Pg as well. Do try to order & see if it’s good. 😉

  10. Amelialing911

wau! Austin Chase got! my fav location to lepak with wifi! :good: 😀 as starbucks is always too pack of ppl!

    1. rebeccasaw

Haha. Keith was telling me the same thing about you yesterday!
Yup yup, quite cosy.. i might just join u one day!

  11. JustinH

I still remember that there is a Cheese Cake outing we need to do :mail:

  12. Chong

I’m at Austin Chase, The Gardens commenting live now. LOL. Just tried their Swiss Chocolate Velvet. The crepe didn’t taste like one at all. It’s kinda hard / dry. Had hard time cutting thru with fork. Kinda disappointed.

    1. rebeccasaw

      Oh dear!
I wonder if they have not kept it properly. Ovrexposure to air or too many days in chiller will make the crepes dry up…

  13. TummyRumble

talking about subway, the subway here in UK is bloody good compared to what we get in Msia man.. They have lots of cool sauces and they’re pretty generous with their ingredients..

    1. rebeccasaw

Guess we have a long way to go?
Or maybe .. it’s time we Malaysian open our own Subways – like chains. I dont see why we can’t do it.

  14. iamthewitch

Love Mille Crepe cakes! I’ve only had them from Food Foundry before and I think from the pictures, the portion from Food Foundry is slightly bigger slice? And cost cheaper at RM10. But of course it’s not as easily accessible compared to Austin Chase la.. Will give it a try when I go to Gardens next time! 🙂

    1. rebeccasaw

I havent been to food foundry for such a long time! Maybe I should pop in again quickly so I can do another comparison!

  15. Andrew

I totally agree with you on this. I was at Wimbledon and Subway over there is great!

    1. rebeccasaw

Sigh. So even Singapore got better subway, McDs, Burger King, Tony Romas than us ok!

  16. MCF

Had the same experience one time at Austin Chase and when I asked they said they just took it out of the freezer at -15C!!! No wonder it was hard.

Not sure if it is the Humble Beginnings optimal temperature or if AC is keeping to the HB specification of storage. Someone should write to them.

Had Food Foundry recently and still find their Vanilla very custardy and their Chocolate a bit tasting like gula melaka.

    1. rebeccasaw

I ddin’t have that problem that day. Oh dear.. I should tell the owner.

  17. AngelKein

    Regretting! 🙁
    Should. Have. Taken. More. Bites.

    lol

  18. J2Kfm

This means they only bake to order? Hmm, I wonder can we buy whole cakes at Austin Chase outlets. Good to see that Humble Beginnings (what a name!) jumped in the fray, since Nadeje’s miles away and I have not tasted Food Foundry’s.

    1. rebeccasaw

I think Austin Chase won’t stop you from buying the whole cakes as I saw the whole ones un-cut the other day. So it iis only when they ran out of the slices ones then they start to cut the whole cakes.
Yup, definitely a better option than Nadeje (since it’s so far) & also Food Foundry.

  19. Keith Chong

hmm.. i think melaka – nadeja still top the chart. 🙂

    1. rebeccasaw

Really ar? U tried the one in Austin Chase di??

  20. Munkey

I have heard about the Humble Beginnings but I’m yet to visit Austin Chase. Per slice is pretty expensive though! 🙁

    1. Rebecca

Munkey , there’s a lot of places now selling mille crepe di…yes some cheaper, but taste-wise err.. hehe.. tak boleh makan weiii
