Teluk Kumbar is quite a distance from Georgetown but Ayu Mee Udang is worth the drive if you can spare the time and if you have willing company.
A standard bowl with a choice of kuey teow, mee hoon, mee or maggi mee or even fried rice plus 3 large prawns starts from RM14.00.
The Mee Udang Special is RM22 while the largest portion labeled “Mee Udang Mangkuk” is RM39.00.

The key to this delicious bowl of noodles is the gravy. The stock was boiled with chicken, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, shrimps, eggs and more (understandably the workers here won’t tell me everything) for 3 hours until the desired flavour and consistency is achieved.
The lady I spoke to claimed that no spices were added nor any flavourings. All natural ingredients goes into the gravy, she had shared.

Although the gravy isn’t heavily infused with prawn flavour, we didn’t mind as it was tasty enough. Besides, the gravy is meant to be slightly thick and sweet, but not strong on the sea flavour.
The prawns are succulent and sweet. The lady told me that they get their catch fresh from the fishermen every day.

The restaurant was empty when we arrived at around 4pm on a weekday. But as I observed over the one hour we lingered, business is actually fairly brisk with walk-ins and takeaway orders.
Another reason why we were so relaxed was because the outlet is so clean and quiet.
After a whole afternoon of driving around Georgetown and documenting my halal guide, we were just happy to savour our mee udang, sip our cold beverages and chat. Not a single fly was spotted throughout our visit and that’s says a lot, considering that the area is so close to the sea.

Last but not least, here’s a bit of direction should you get lost even with the GPS provided above.

Drive along Jalan Gertak Sanggul and once you see the Police Station on your left, turn RIGHT (into the lane opposite it).
Go on til you see the “Ayu Mee Udang” signboard on your right. It is a shoplot in the housing area.
Park by the side of the road and head in for your mee udang fix! 🙂
NOTE: Another popular choice is Salwa which is just a few doors down from the police station on the same side of the road.
