Halal Roast Duck in KL – Roast Kitchen @ TTDI (Taman Tun)

As a Chinese halal roast meats were never a concern for me.
In fact when Roast Kitchen in TTDI first opened, I had even thought that the business wouldn’t last. I mean, what’s roast meat with char siew (BBQ pork) and siew yok (roasted pork belly)?

Now in their 3rd year of operations, I have obviously been proven wrong. And thankfully so.

Our Muslim friends can now enjoy halal Chinese barbeque meats with the existence of Roast Kitchen, located just at Jalan Wan Kadir, just off Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad in Taman Tun.
Shiny, crispy skin fowls hung enticingly from the window display at the front of the shop, enticing passers-by for a meal.
In fact from the display it looks like any other roast meat shop except that only halal duck, chicken and beef are served here.

My main focus for this visit is the Chinese-style roast duck and chicken though they have quite an expansive menu with stewed beef brisket, sweet and sour fish, mushrooms and fish, seafood asam tom yam and honey roasted BBQ beef.
I had wanted to taste it myself and deduce if it’s as good as our usual Chinese hawker style versions and thus we started with an Aromatic Roast Duck (Lower quarter for RM20) and a Roast Duck with Superior Sauce (Upper quarter RM23).

Since my lunch partner for the day has an insatiable appetite, we added an order of BBQ chicken thigh noodles (dry/soup), RM8.30 (S)/10.80 (L) plus a side order of fried mantou.
Half a duck plus noodles and rice and mantou for 2 pax? Heck why not! 🙂

The Aromatic Roast Duck was dressed in a sweet but mildly sourish sauce while the Superior Sauce was more of soy based gravy.
Both ducks were excellent minus any strong, gamey smell. I find that the meat for the superior sauce version moist and juicier than the aromatic version which came across to be drier and sweeter. However we were told both ducks were prepared the same way.
Well, I won’t argue with the proprietors if they say so.

They also sent some crispy duck (another version available here) over to our table. However, my favourite still remained with the Superior Sauce version.

The fine springy noodles had a firm bite to it and the BBQ chicken thigh was tender with a nice honeyed flavor. There are charred bits at some edges which really makes it taste like the normal char siew.

No chilli or ginger sauce are served here but Roast Kitchen offers their very own XO (extraordinary) chilli oil made with dried shrimps and other secret ingredients.
The chilli oil are available for take-away in packaged bottles as well.

Greens are a bit expensive considering that a small serving starts from RM7. The Crispy Chinese mantou was pretty basic (RM4.50) though it was served with a nice sauce.

Plain water is chargeable at RM0.70 per glass (free refills) and other beverages offered are soya bea, canned drinks, chinese tea and coffee.

Overall I have to applaud the owners for offering Chinese style roast meats that is halal but tasted so similar to the original versions although they had to work around some ingredients which they can’t use.
As a testament of its authenticity, the outlet is popular with both Chinese and Malay patrons.

    Really halal?
Well halal or not, no muslims are going to the shop. Period.
Go ask the shop how many muslim customers they serve a day.
    Stupid concept. Bankrupt soon.
