Halal dim sum in KL - Siang at Sogo - rebecca saw blog-004

There was one point sometime ago that I had to seek out halal outlets for an app writing assignment I had. So I went around sampling food from pork-free and halal outlets in KL and after 2 weeks I came to a conclusion; there are not many actual JAKIM certified outlets, but there are many pork-free outlets serving halal certified meats.

Siang at Sogo is one such outlet.
A Chinese banquet seating style restaurant that offers prepared-to-order Chinese dishes, another of their popular offerings is the dim sum.

I find the prices pretty reasonable and the dim sum well prepared and fresh. All in all, not a bad choice for those seeking a comfortable, air conditioned environment and decent dim sum fare.

The carrot cake was nicely seasoned and adeptly fried. It wasn’t redolent of “wok hei” (wok fire aroma) but it was acceptably tasty nonetheless.
Fishballs are a must-order for me and the ones here fell a bit below par. But rest assured that these weren’t the usual hard, starchy commercial ones. I just happened to have very high expectations for fishballs since it’s my favourite dim sum item.
We did enjoy the yam cake in a bowl; dense and generously studded with yam cubes and deliciously savoury. It was rather filling too.
The steamed siew mai is plump and for RM10++ the chee cheong fun was stuffed with thick pieces of scallops though the skin was a tad starchier and thicker than how I like my rice rolls. But I like I said before, the dim sum here is of passable levels so just keep your expectations in check if you visit.
The char siew bao was decent for a fowl version and plump with chicken meat and mock char siew. Both the chilled desserts ordered completed our halal dim sum experience on a good note.
Celestial Court at Sheraton Imperial remains my default choice for pork-free dim sum but this is a good alternative for those on a smaller budget.

NOTE: Last order for dim sum is at 4.00pm in the afternoons.

Hi Rebecca, should also give their Jap restaurant Suma a try, they’re pretty good but unfortunately not well advertised at all. They have a very capable Japanese chef who’s actually an expat and they use the same supplier as Kampachi for their sashimis. =)

Lovely, now I know where to bring my muslims friends for a dim sum meal with prices that’s not going to burn a hole in everyone’s pocket!

Yes! Finally something about halal dim sum!

Any halal dim sum outlets with the price range of RM3- RM5? Like those coffee shops/independent outlets, non big restaurants/hotels.

Siang has the best Slated Egg Prawn, one of my favourite dish.

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your informative review on Siang@Sogo. I was just looking into some reviews to see if it is a halal outlet and worth a try. Interestingly, you also mentioned that there are many pork-free, halal-certified-meat-serving restaurants but few with actual JAKIM certification (I wonder why but that’s not a question for you to answer, I know 😉 ) Anyway, would you mind sharing a few names of the outlets with actual JAKIM halal cert? Thanks (and really appreciate it if you do!)
