I came home rather spirited to write this piece after a scrumptious lunch, inspiring conversation and an enheartening short interview with Chef Ashley; the mastermind behind the amazing healthy yet delicious menu in Living Food @Menara Tan & Tan on Jalan Tun Razak.

Ashley and I agreed on several points, eggs are wonderful food, the food industry is tough but one must never compromise on quality and healthy eating should be a lifestyle, not a fad.

Very inspiring indeed. And from someone so young.
One wouldn’t have guessed as you tuck into absolutely mouth-watering roast lamb, with black thosai and sweet, tangy fresh chutney that the whole beginning of it from raw ingredients to being conceptualized as a wholesome dish came from a pretty young thing barely crossing the 25 years old mark.

Pot Roast Lamb Korma – December & January Special : Grass fed lamb braised with korma spices served with salad. RM38++.

The “black pancakes” are actually blended lentils batter made into thosai and was delicious to eat with the tender, juicy lamb. Don’t be deceived by the name “korma” for the sauce wasn’t heavy on the korma spices but came across more like a brown gravy, derived lamb juices from hours of roasting.

Each dish here was satiating yet minus the bloated feeling one normally gets after a meal. While flavours are admittedly less intense, no dish was bland.
Just be reminded to slow down and chew and savour your food. Be mindful of what was in your mouth, and you’ll taste the natural flavours of the food.

Lasagne are normally heavy on the cheese, cream and well, fat.
But Living Food proved that a healthy lasagne is achievable, even a delicious one. Juicy white button mushrooms and imported kale lined the layers of this lasagne.
A sprinkling of sheep cheese (Manchego) topped the dish, just enough for the requisite cheese flavour but without being overwhelmingly indulgent.

Mushroom & Kale Lasagne – (Vegetarian) RM28.

Japanese sweet potatoes (my favourite kind!) take centrestage for this dish.
Soft mashed potatoes was rolled into a roulade, added with almond cream (the slightly grainy white substance on top) , fruits – this visit being mangoes, arugula & olives served with tomato & romaine salad, dressed with passion fruit.

The sweetness of the potatoes were very well complemented with the burst of succulent mangoes within its folds.
Chef Ashley seems fond of mangoes as the delicate and intriguingly creative Quinoa sushi also has strips of mangoes encased with quinoa mixed with mashed avocados wrapped in seaweed.

Should you opt for a sandwich, do pick the duck pancetta for the Ultimate Club Sandwich (RM28). The duck pancetta wasn’t what I expected since ‘pancetta’ gave me visions of dried, processed ham-like meat but it turned out to be meaty and very much like grilled duck meat.
The breads used here are also baked on-site. We loved the duck, the french cheese (fol epi) and the sweet tang from pineapples. The flavours did come together nicely BUT for the price paid, I would strongly suggest one of the mains of laksa, nasi lemak or pasta for a better value-for-money experience.

Ultimate Club Sandwich (RM28)Runny poached egg, sautéed mushrooms, tomato, pineapple, lettuce, grilled fol epi, and choice of
1. Smoke duck pancetta
2. Smoke salmon
3. Roast turkey
4. Grilled veggies

A lovely Apple Crumble was our dessert. Butter was used for the base but in moderation. One could easily polished every crumb off without feeling as if you have sinned.
Chef Ashley incorporated oats and walnuts into her recipe and ensured it was filled with generous chunks of apples with every chunk still retaining a bit of crunch, exactly how I prefer my apple desserts.
I lamented to her about how most apple pies recipes are basically a syrupy mess of some overcooked apple bits in greasy pastry and we both literally shuddered at that vision. LOL.

Kangen water is served here but for additional nourishment do consider the Exilirs.
My choice was Super Nutritious Active Youth (*anti aging) which is a blend of soy milk, sesame seed, almond, chia, matcha & vitamin C & E. RM12.

As we sat back after a healthy satisfying meal, Mr Philip Yun, owner of Living Food Bistro informed me rather confidently that they brew one of the best coffee in town.

Since I avoid coffee I took a sip from Marian’s Piccolo Latte and thought it’s fair to say that it wasn’t bad. I’m not in any position to judge anyways, considering how little coffee I consume.

I can’t wait for the new menu launch next week as well as for their version of Yee Sang. That, and the burgers that I didn’t managed to sample this round.
If you’re like me who avoids Jalan Tun Razak due to its notorious traffic, just take the LRT and walk from Ampang Park. Else head there on weekends as Living Food Bistro serves all day breakfast with lovely Eggs Ben and pancakes.
I’m certainly aiming to try that myself soon!
Besides, there will be branches of Living Food Bistro in Telawi 3 (near Alexis ) next month, followed by KLCC in April.
Yes, healthy living is not a fad, for many it is a lifestyle. And kudos to establishments like Living Food Bistro for catering to this demand.

  3. I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and
let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about.
I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my hunt for
    something concerning this.

    Black pancakes = thosai? LOL
Using lentils replacing flour is a great gluten free option.
