Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur – Mooncakes for 2013

Mooncakes made its debut this year from the kitchens of Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. For its inaugural launch, the team has decided to keep things simple and close to tradition with a selection of only 4 traditional flavoured baked mooncakes namely Red Bean, Low Sugar White Lotus, Low Sugar White Lotus with Single Yolk and Double Lotus Yolk.
They are presented in an elegant tiffany blue box with a solid glossy top cover, making them an ideal gift for family, friends and business associates. I have already emptied mine of mooncakes and the beautiful box is sitting proudly on my dresser filled with my rings. 🙂

Instead of the usual individually plastic packaged mooncakes, Grand Hyatt took a step further and introduced theirs with a nicely fitted plastic mould cover within each set. I actually like this better as it makes the whole set of mooncakes more convenient to store; not to mention easier to open and close each time as you slowly savour wedge by wedge of the delicious mooncakes.

Another that strikes me about these mooncakes are the very traditional motifs on each piece. Tastewise it’s very uncomplicated and homely too.

The 3 lotus paste ones are almost similar. Honestly all the mooncakes are NOT diabetically sweet; not even the Double Lotus Yolk which isn’t low sugar. I’m glad that most mooncakes in recent years are less greasy and are made with better health and well-being in mind.

Low Sugar White Lotus – RM28.
As evident from the pictures, the baked skin of each mooncake is nicely brown and thin.

Low Sugar White Lotus with Single Yolk (RM28) and Double Lotus Yolk (RM29). I like how big the yolks are! 🙂

Last but least is the Red Bean mooncake (RM26).
Red bean mooncakes are never my favorite as I find them rather boring. However the first bite of this one by Grand Hyatt took me by surprise for as I chewed; the wonderful fragrance of tangerine filled my mouth.
Lovely! I think the chef added dried tangerine peel into the red bean paste and that certainly elevates the taste of the common red bean paste. I particularly liked the texture too; a bit on the grainy side which sort of gave the impression that it’s ‘handmade’ and homely, unlike the mass produced paste from factories.

Other than the baked mooncakes, there are 4 snowskin creations.

1. Red Bean Paste Snow Skin 红豆冰皮
2. Pandan Paste Snow Skin 香兰冰皮
3. Dates Paste Snow Skin 蜜枣冰皮
4. Corn Paste Snow Skin 玉米冰皮

Price: MYR 15 for one piece OR MYR 118 for a box of 8 pieces.

I haven’t sampled any of the snowskin ones. If I do my first choice would be the Dates Paste Snowskin. In fact I was told that this Dates Snowskin is a specialty of Grand Hyatt KL.
Well, I’ll let you know how it’s like once I tasted it! 🙂

    Hey Becks!
Their mooncake boxes do remind me of Tiffany&co 😉
Should go get their Low Sugar White Lotus with Single Yolk for my family but I keep the box, hehe!

  2. Karen

The mooncakes are just nice, not too sweet nor greasy. Imagine me enjoying their Red Bean mooncake when I seldom touch red bean ;).

  3. Kris

Interesting to see there is Dates Paste snow skin. Will drop by to check it out. Maybe grab one to try before buying a box for the family. Thanks for the info Becky!

  4. mmm, the design at the top of the mooncakes is nice. very intricate and looks very beautifully ‘carved.’ i guess sometimes we get caught up with the flavors and we don’t notice the distinct physical artistry in each hotel/restaurant’s mooncakes 😀
