Heard of it? Yes, No?

No doubt the name is a bit misleading, and like any other Malaysian, my immediate reaction to the name was “Huh? Why the 100% similarity in name to Sibu in Sarawak and it’s in Johor??”

Name confusion aside, this island is unbelievably pristine with much coveted clear waters that is unusual for this part of the Peninsular.

Pardon my ignorance, I never knew that the southern tip of the Peninsular has not ONE, but a few beautiful islands that’s suitable for idyllic island get-aways!

Sibu Island Resort is located off the east coast of Mersing, a town in the State of Johor. About 1 and a half hours drive from Johor Bahru, Tanjung Leman jetty is the entryway to the island, via ferry or catamaran in a mere 20 minutes journey.

We went in a bus, and I slept for most part of the 1 and half hour journey. I don’t think I missed much, other than a bumpy ride and a landscape of gold/revenue generating palm oil estate. In case you’re unaware, Johor is one of the main palm oil producing states.

The jetty was packed with people waiting for their turn to board the ferry. Most unfortunately, efficiency levels are pretty low here.

Daily ferry starts at 11.30am and since we were in a group of our own, we chartered a catamaran. The 11.30am ferry was late, and our catamaran was late too. Long story short, we were made to wait in idle for a good 2 hours!

Anyhow, for those who are heading to the islands from this jetty, there are plenty of parking spaces and we were assured by our tour guide that it is secure, even if you were to leave your vehicle here for a few days.

Believe it not, there’s an air-conditioned KFC here.

Below: Typical jetty landscape.

By the time we boarded the catamaran, we were restless, agitated and hungry.

Note: This air-conditioned catamaran seats 70 and was pretty steady. Even a sensitive motion-sickness prone person like me found the 20 minutes journey to be pleasant and comfortable.

Fortunately, spirits lifted when we saw the vast sea and the welcoming sight of the Sibu Island Resort.

I gapped when I saw the waters.

Breathtaking isn’t it! The urge to dive from the catamaran into the waters came to mind.

This is one of the adventure contraptions that are available for the leisure and teambuilding activities on the island. My first thought was “Can I go up there?”

Crankiness aside, the welcoming drink plus the enthusiatic singing performance helped to cheer us up!

After a quick lunch, I took time to explore the island.

Much has been done to transform Sibu Island Resort into an iconic adventure learning site and sea-sports centre in Asia. It’s recent make-over involving the refurbishment of its 121 deluxe timber chalets, lobby upgrades and reclaimation of works of 3 new pristine beaches has put it on par with international holiday destinations.

I was thrilled to see the crystal clear waters and I just had to jump in, shorts and all.

I was even more captivated when I saw fishes swimming around my legs! That shows how unspoiled the beaches here are!

Here you go, more shots of the fishes. Can you spot them?

Amazing isn’t it? This was in shallow waters that was just 3-4 feet out from the beach. Imagine if we went out to snorkel or dive.

We didn’t stay the night so I wasn’t be able to review the accommodation and service. We were pretty much only visitors for the day so all we made the most of it scrolling on its grounds, visiting some chalets and shooting some arrows.

Here are some of the pictures I took around the resort.

Facilites: Tennis courts and a small gym.

Animals roam freely here and are fairly tame.

If you walk up to them slowly, you’ll actually get to pat them.

Not doubt I’m obsessed about food but I’m even more obsessed about food that are ordinarily out of my “reach”. Food such as these falls under the category of “authentic cuisine of other countries, only best savoured in their respective countries”.
While the trip to every country in the world will have to wait, I’m thankful to hotels like Prince who consistently runs promotions of different cuisines of the world in their dining outlets.
For this May, Greek is the theme and over the next 6 days at Eccucino, diners can look forward to indulge and smell the delicious aromas of moussaka, souvlaki and over 20 types of traditional dishes that are ancient Greece.

That was just the mains; while a whole lot more awaits at the appetisers and desserts tables.

A typical Greek Salad - Khoriatiki.
It is a salad made with tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell peppers, red onion, feta cheese and olives, seasoned with salt and dried oregano and finished with an olive oil dressing. Common additions include capers, rocket leaves, vinegar, lemon juice, and chopped parsley.

NOTES ON OLIVE OILS:

For modern Greeks, olive oil is one of the basic necessities of life. Olive oil has been more than mere food to the people of the Mediterranean with its supposed medicinal properties.

Olive Oil Grades
• Extra-virgin olive oil comes from virgin oil production only, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and has a superior taste. It is used on salads, added at the table to soups and stews and for dipping.

• Virgin olive oil comes from virgin oil production only, has an acidity less than 1.5%, and has a good taste.

• Pure olive oil. Oils labeled as pure olive oil or Olive oil is usually a blend of refined and virgin production oil.

• Olive oil is a blend of virgin and refined production oil, of no more than 2% acidity. It commonly lacks a strong flavor.

• Olive pomace oil is refined pomace olive oil often blended with some virgin oil. It has a more neutral flavor than pure or virgin olive oil; however, it has the same fat composition as regular olive oil with the same health benefits. It also has a high smoke point, and thus is widely used in cooking.

Informative yes? I tried them all and crowned the extra virgin olive oil my favourite of the lot.

Next, a medley of lip-smacking dips to be eaten with the freshly made pita breads.

Gourmet olives, feta cheese and olive oils are available with abundance on the tables. Lovers of these will certainly see their money worth for this buffet. Myself was hooked on the fish mousse, a mighty blend of fish, herbs and chopped vegetables. A layer of sour cream (or was it yogurt?) was spread over the top and lastly dotted with capers and pickles.

It was the most addictive spread ever, and I wished I had remembered asking Chef George for the recipe!

Items such as the sweet and sour Okra (Bamies psimenes), Roasted Eggplants (Melitzanes aromatikes), Dolmades (Greek parcels of rice wrapped with grape leaves or vine leaves) and dips are Greek staples which I made sure to staple a portion of each. A variety of Feta Cheeses and Olive oils also took up a quarter of my stomach space!

Dolmades.
Grape leaves stuffed with long-grain rice, toasted pine nuts, fresh herbs and seasonings. It can be served as part of a mezze platter, finger food or simply enjoyed as a tasty snack.

Feta Cheese.
Traditionally made with sheep or goat’s milk, it is an aged, crumbly cheese and has a mild salty, fresh flavour with slightly grainy texture. It can be used as a table cheese, as well as in salads, in pastries and baking and combined with olive oil and vegetables. It is an important ingredient in Mezedes platters, Horiatiki salad, and Spanakopita to name a few.

Some of the original spread of the daily dinner buffet were available at a separate section so that’s an option for those who may need an alternative to the Greek spread during this 10 days.

However, I urge you to try each and every dish on the Greek/Mediterranean table. It is very palatable to our Asian tastebuds really; and every dish has its own distinctive flavours punctuated with the aromas and aftertaste thanks to the herbs and spices used.

The soup (Fasolatha) was to me best described as our local dhaal, albeit a sweeter version. It was really tummy-warming though and I was most tempted to dip bread rolls into it.
It is often considered the national dish of Greece. This bean soup combines the healthiest parts of the Mediterranean diet, which contains a generous amount of vegetable and olive oil.

But since stomach capacity is limited, I focused on the mains instead. The Venezuelan buffet I had recently was good, but limited in choices. Here, the spread is quite extensive, and happily enough for me there were some dishes that I have not sampled before in other Mediterranean restaurants.

Eggplant with Tomato Pilaf. So tasty and marvellously perfumed with the mix of herbs and spices.

Pan Fried crab cakes with corn salsa, chipotle and lemon dressing.
This tightly packed with sweet juicy crabmeat is a hit! I went back for seconds and thirds.

Oven Roasted Potatoes with paprika.
Oven roasted potatoes are an healthier alternative for carbs, and so good when baked with some spices.

Stewed Chicken with Tomato Sauce. (Kokkinisto)
Kokkinisto means ‘reddened’ and describes a dish that has been slowly cooked in tomato sauce and red wine. It is one of the most traditional Greek dishes and is equally at home on the family dinner table or in a local restaurant. It is usually served with lamb, beef or chicken and it can also be served cold. Delicious!

Prawn Saganaki (Prawn and Feta Hotpot).
This was delicious! The prawns seems a bit “soft”; meaning not as firm and bouncy as it should be and gave an impression of “unfresh”. However, I love the taste of this dish. Regarding the texture, perhaps it’s due to the cooking method? After all, the prawns at the salads section were agreeably bouncy and fresh.

Lamb Souvlakia (Grilled Lamb Skewers).
Souvlakia - A popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer. Can be served on the skewer, in pita bread or on a dinner plate. Souvlakia can be made with lamb, beef, chicken and even fish.

Yiro.
Slices of marinated lamb, beef, chicken or mutton stacked on a vertical spit and roasted. It is served as a sandwich stuffed into pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and yogurt and has been sold on the streets of Greece for hundreds of years.

Vegetables with Rice and Herbs. So well presented no? As for the taste, what else can I say? Mediterranean rice dishes are always aromatic and so addictively palatable!

The Greek has very unique desserts that veered away from the usual tarts, cakes and cream puddings.

Loukoumades.
A fried-pastry dessert drizzled with cinnamon and honey, sometimes called Greek doughnuts. Loukoumades are the oldest recorded European pastry and were ceremoniously awarded to the victors in the ancient Olympic Games.

This milky custard was incredibly good. Non-cloying and just pleasantly sweet, it took everyone’s votes for the best dessert.

Baklava. I’m sure this is a familiar item to Malaysians by now.
A rich, sweet pastry made of layers of crisp filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. A very popular sweet with versions found throughout Greece, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Here is another Mediterranean specialty. I’m not sure if it’s just Greece because I had this before in Al-Amar, which is a Lebanese restaurant.

These chocolate coated almonds were addictive!

Finikia.
Walnut shortbread with Citrus Honey.

I did mention at the beginning of the post that the buffet really offers a taste of Greece right? Overall, we were pleased with the selections available and the opportunity to savour Greek food right here in KL. And since it’s a buffet, I got to sample the whole spread and only went for seconds for items that were favourites of mine.

To round up our experience, we were served Greek wine and treated to a short Zorba’s dancing performance as well as an Ouzo tasting session by the Hellenic Society.

Zorba dance.

A short and informative session on Ouzo, a drink similar to Arack in Lebanon or Grappa in Italy.

I tasted Arack before in Al-Amar, Pavilion KL and I didn’t like it then. As expected, I didn’t like the Ouzo either.

But it is a manner of acquired taste, so don’t mind me. In Greece, Ouzo are typically served with appetisers and drank prior to a main meal. So if lunch is 1.00pm, then it’s Ouzo hour at about 11.00 am.

Ouzo is produced only in Greece via the distillation method. Other components that goes into the drink includes fennel, anise seeds, and Greece herbs.
Ouzo can be drank neat, on ice or mixed with water. Ouzo becomes cloudy when mixed with water,

It was a good evening with authentic Greek food, wine, dance and liquor; and not to mention the good company of the other diners. I had a good time absorbing and uunderstanding a little more about the beautiful country of Greece. I’ll definitely visit Greece next year, if not the year after.

I have a preferance for restaurants that offers something out of the ordinary, regardless of the size of their dining space.

Any business; and I think this applies even more for F & B businesses, should attempt to differentiate themselves from the hundreds of other similar establishments.

Often, it’s these unconventional items that kept the customers coming back; not to mention to being the crowd puller at the initial stage.

For Petite Millie, I would return for their “Poutine“; a Canadian dish of comforting fries drowned in brown sauce and with cheese curds. Nothing beats the feel-good buzz in the head when one chews on these fries, soaked with the delicious savoury gravy.

The glamour-tized versions of Poutine can be found here, one of which I had recently, The Beef Cheek Poutine; a bowl of incredibly tender cheeks and fragrant from the truffle oil. I love the gelatinous texture of the meat and the crispy fries smothered in brown gravy. The dish came added with my favourite button and shimeji mushrooms.

6 Hours Braised Beef Cheek, Freshly Ground Pepper and Truffle Oil. RM26.00.

Another specialty here is the Tarte Flambee, a thin pizza from Alsace. Tarte Flambee is to northern Alsace what pizza is to southern Italy. So no worries if you’re inclined to refer to this as “thin crust pizza” for technically, you’re not far off the mark.

Avocado and Crab … c’est une bonne vie! RM19.50.
Fragrant Thyme – Lemon Oil, Chive – Crab Meat Salad with Avocado.

Making this starts with bread dough which was rolled out as thin as a crepe. Where this differs from your common pizza is that the dough is spread with creme fraiche, a sour cream mixed with white cheese called fromage blanc.

As expected of a bread-whore, I loved this, especially the cream base. The thin crust lessen some of the guilt that comes with eating too much carbs but seriously, it was the base that makes it so good!
The pliable dough is crisp at the edges and the cream added moisture while the fresh crabmeat went very well with its bed of sweet, caramelized onions.
The next item you absolutely have to try is the Tartine. Again it’s one of Petite Mille specialty, though not as complicated to make. Tartine is of French origins and is essentially an open-faced sandwich, preferably using country or whole grain breads. So no, your open face sandwich on top of a slice of Gardenia bread doesn’t qualify!

Luv a Duck. RM23.50.
Peppered Duck Breast & Fresh Rocket Leaves, Orange – Dill Aioli.

Dill Aioli and a good slice of country bread would make me a happy girl, what more with savory smoked duck!

This came with toasted bread sticks that were originally from the sides of the tart flambee. Much healthier than fries for sure!

Frankly, I’m still of the opinion that though the food was good, prices are still a little on the high side considering the portions served. For some, the quality of ingredients used and the effort that goes into the preparation justified the cost. For me, the mains were generous enough, but the starters could have been bigger.

Anyhow, the mains didn’t wow me as much as the starters and salads.

White Truffle Oil Fish Pie, one of that’s their signatures – RM36.50.
The Magnificent White Truffle Oil Baked Fish Pie with Shiitake Mushroom.

Basil Oil Tossed Spaghettini, RM28.00.
Seared Rare Tuna Loin a la Plancha, Tomato Beurre Blanc and Zucchini.

I find both palatable, but they wouldn’t be my choice of order if I re-visit Petite Mille.
The soup was something else. Thick and satisfyingly hearty, this wasn’t coyingly creamy but instead intensified with flavours of potatoes and leek. Thumbs up for this!

Roasted Leek and Potato Veloute. RM12.50.
Chive – Ricotta Smoked Fish Tartare and Avocado Oil.

Portabello Sandwich. RM 18.50.
Comte Cheese, Toasted Walnuts & Bell Pepper Relish.

I had the Petite Mille Salad before this and I loved it. The dehydrated vegetables (carrots, corn and another which I can’t recall) retained its flavours though it was dehydrated, and these added texture to an otherwise plain salad.

I’m just as in love with The Portobello Salad. The mushrooms were huge, sweet and juicy. The greens were a bit overdressed so it was quite oily but that’s just me. Do keep in mind that I have a tendency to avoid anything oily.
Below: Salads starts from RM14.50.

Petite Mille offers a good selection of desserts. I had the Apple Crumble back on my first visit in February and the same again last week. I must say the taste was consistent.

February 2012.

May 2012.

Cinnamon Crusty Napolean RM14.50.
with Seasonal Fruit and Berries, Mango Sherbet.

I’m not a fan of sorbet but this was good! Unlike the usual face contorting sour ones, this one was sweet with a pleasant tinge of tang.

You can’t go wrong with the smoothies here. On both visits I ordered smoothies and it was satisfyingly thick with the perfect ratio of fruit juices to ice.

Juicy Dreams (Strawberry, Melon & Lychee). RM14.

I can’t remember what exactly this was.

My dining partner then was contented with her tea, but this time round, Andrew complained that the coffee gave him too much of a buzz.

No doubt one of the many “allures” of Johor is its close proximity to Singapore; and both Johor and Singapore has been enjoying this close proximity of distance for many years, despites some “petty” Malaysian/Singaporean disputes.

Crossing the Causeway..

The situation has changed slightly now, with Johor offering some pretty thrilling attractions in the state itself. IF anything, Singaporeans would have many more reasons to flock into Johor, as attested by the popularity of Johor Premium Outlets.

While we await the opening of Legoland and a theme park, Universal Studios Singapore remains one of the prime attractions of Singapore.

During my previous trip in October 2010, the Sci-Fi City was not in operation in its entirety, so I missed out on the Cyclone ride. I had fun at all the other 7 zones (so far I have only blogged about–> New York and Hollywood : Ancient Egypt) and vowed to be back for the Sci-Fi City.

1 and a half years later, I’m back and the first zone I headed for was; well you guessed it! The Sci-Fi Zone!

Below: A quick briefing by the RWS personnel prior to our adventure.

Frankly, 80% of Universal Studios looked the same. Obviously there were changes in shows, or minor changes in the shops, but other than that, everything is pleasantly similar to my prior visit back in Oct 2010.

Below: Entrance – New York zone.

The bakeries murmured sweet promises to me; “We have pastries, chocolates, sandwiches, CAKES..”.

And Marilyn’s turkey legs shimmied seductively.

However, I soldiered on towards Sci-Fi City resolutely, ignoring all temptations as I don’t think anyone would appreciate vomit over them halfway through the rides.

I took pictures with a pretty Parisan woman the last time, but today I bumped into Frankestein, who was adamant about having my head!!

After New York was Hollywood. There were some new eateries along this stretch that opened not too long ago.

I wanted to get my face painted, but the queue was too long.

I took sort of a nostalgia route down these streets, remembering the person I was back in October 2010, and the reason I was here. Looking back, I’m happy to note that things has been most favorable for me and I’m most contented with my life now.

Strolling along the streets at every zone is an experience in itself. There are spontaneous appearances of “celebrities”, cartoon characters and performances, ensuring every minute of your time spent is kept as engrossed as possible. Nope, not a moment of boredom allowed.

Finally!

The Sci-Fi City beckons, taunting us with its majestic rides.

At the entrance a little display box blinked “30 mins”, indicating the waiting time for the ride..

Unfazzled, we walked in anyways. No one’s going to stop us from the Transformers Ride that we have been hearing so much about!

Here’s a little video of my experience, from the wait til we “boarded” the Transformer vehicle. The vehicle has a name but I just can’t remember what was it!

A smart way of ensuring that the crowd doesn’t get too restless during the long wait was these long winding alleys in fully air conditioned enclosures. Instead of staying stationary and feeling the draggy wait, the long queue moved along constantly, and there were plenty of distractions along the passage.

We moved from one room to another, but was rarely dead bored during the 30-45mins wait. There was plenty to see and photograph. The walls and our surroundings displayed all manner of Transformer thingamajigs and on large screens action packed clips from Transformers characters kept us enthralled. The audio system boomed with their voices and at times different soundtracks from the show was played.

When you come to this, then you know your wait is almost over! Pick up these “Battle Glasses” (which frankly didn’t really do much) and proceed to the pick up area.

A glimpse of the car. Unfortunately at this stage, cameras were not allowed.

But if you watch this video clip, I managed to shoot the vehicle before I was stopped by the officers. So if you really really want to see the vehicle for the ride, watch the video!

The Transformer Ride was REALLY fun and was definitely worth 1-2 hours wait!
Yes, it was that good! The 4D technology really brings the “you’re in the movie” feel; being right in the thick of the action and having the Transformer characters actually interacting with you. You will feel smoke, water, heat, etc during the ride itself!

However, while it was enjoyable, there’s very little parts of it that were actually scary. So unless you’re a big scaredy cat, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about!

Coming out from the ride, you will walk through the Transformer merchandise outlet. Well, advertising and promotion is important right?

Next we headed straight for the Cyclone!

Yes it was a ride that I missed during my previous trip and I’m definitely not leaving USS without catching a ride!

I do not have any pictures even for the waiting area as ALL bags and belongings has to be kept inside the lockers before you are allowed entry to the waiting hall.

There are 2 options, 1 “Cylone” which was the one I took; and another “Human”, which was supposedly less scary.
I would advise EVERYONE to take the Cylone! It was superbly thrilling, heart- wrenching and mind-blowing!
Again, I’m an adrenaline junkie so I wasn’t too affected. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it immensely so I’m sure you would to!

This trip was made possible by Firefly Airlines, co-sponsored by Johor State Tourism, Resort World Sentosa, Truly Travel Mart Tour & Transport Sdn Bhd and SN Vacation. Thank you!

Last but not least, do you know that a Malaysian Food Street (with pork and all!) was opened not long ago in Universal Studios Singapore?
Yes, it’s located right outside the entrance of USS.

Art enthusiatics and appreciators here?
Do join me and my friends tomorrow (SUNDAY, 13th May 2012) for this abstract art show by a Venezuelan at Garibaldi, Bangsar. Here’s the details:

INTRODUCTION.

Exhibition by artist Tony Palacios will be in a retrospective and itinerant format, with works from 2000 to 2011, so as to portray the artist’s evolution, starting with the abstractionist movement and then journeying through figurative art, expressionism and realism. Colour and geometric shapes play a major role in his work, carrying an inner message of mysticism and conveying wisdom and knowledge.

THEMES

The themes in the works of Tony Palacios relate to mysticism, with deep messages that raise consciousness, spanning from the Universe, the interior world of humans and exploring age-old knowledge dating back to the beginning of our existence.

The sky, stars, planets and outer space can all be traced to his work. The circle and the sphere represent the shape of the Sun and the Moon when they rise above earth, a shape that is the highest expression of a perfect shape, representing eternity with no beginning or end or a particular direction either. The circle has been the most significant symbol of all the cultures of the world found in the work of Tony Palacios, a signature of him. The triangle represents unity with the absolute, with divinity. Geometric shapes are also central to this artist’s works. These are the themes that along with colours take us on a journey to infinity, opening the senses to creation where there is no distance between life and art; a discourse with consequences in the shape, space and colour of that which is being represented.

The overpowering magnificence of colour in his paintings shows its infinite power of expression. With the emotion of standing before the soul of things, leaving rules aside, the artist identifies himself with geometric shapes representing intangible, mythical values verging almost on rapture. This is how the work by Tony Palacios can be framed.

After the bumpy and long 5 hours ride in the Volvo XC60, I was grateful to see the signs that says “Tanjong Jara”.

I was so excited that though I saw the signboard, I missed the entrance; and had to make a u-turn! To my defense, the entrance to the resort is pretty well concealed.

A gong sounded upon our arrival, and we were served a cold drink and handed a cold towel.

Trust me, a cold towel never felt so good before. Rahayu, the PR personnel welcomed us personally and Peter, the GM swung by with warm greetings.

All in all, I was embraced with much care and hospitality the moment I stepped into the resort. Seeing how frazzled I was, Peter suggested a quick massage by Dewi, which effectively loses my headache and injected me with a refreshed bout of energy.

Not surprising, since Dewi’s credentials reads: Dewi Hopley – 1) Clinical & Holistic Aromatherapist 2) Massage Therapist & Neuroskeletal Re-alignment Practitioner.
Now, how I wish I know someone like her in KL. That calls for a weekly session!

Luggage left at the good care of the resort staff, I was escorted to my Tg Jara “home” for the duration of my stay.

Mine is the Serambi Room, situated on the ground floor of a double storey unit (where the corresponding room above would be similar in setting, but named Bumbung instead).

Each Serambi room is 55 sq metres in size, and has a king-size bed plus a spare single bed.

The personal messages left in the room curled a smile on my lips. Such intimate touches, and thoroughly welcoming.

I wanted to sink into the bath tub or onto the bed immediately, but the blogger in me insisted a full photshoot and a video before the luggage are even allowed in.

So yes, please do watch the video ok?

Tanjong Jara Resort: Serambi Room

Pictures are a great, but only a video can depict the layout and space of the suite where still images lacked the capability to show.

I love the spacious indoor bathroom with two separate vanity units, separate bath and toilet. A partially covered verandah overlooks the tropical gardens and further to that, I can see the sea!

I don’t know about you, but I prefer separate shower room and toilet facilities in the vanity area.

As per the norm, basic amenities were provided.

While most of us tend to ignore hotel toiletries, just like myself, the ones at Tanjong Jara Resort are of quality and I enjoyed using them.

For your soak, bath salts are provided, just like the ones in JW Marriot, KL.

Back in the room I started setting up my work station. Ok, maybe it’s not approriate to call it ”work” but I appreciate the 2 (yes TWO!) writing desks provided.
Both has its own electrical sockets and lamp. In a welcome basket on the bed, an additional 3 way extension plug was provided.

WIFI, on the other hand, was spotty. As befitting of a property owned by the YTL group, the entire resort is “powered”by YES 4G. I find better connectivity at the lobby and Di Atas Sungai Restaurant.

Not a problem for me, since that means I’ll hole up in the room less and explore the grounds more.

Below: From the front entrance leading into the room.

LCD TV with ASTRO channels (limited of course) but no DVD player. You can use the USB to plug in your thumbdrive for movies if you wish.

The King sized bed faces the TV directly.

The Bumbung Room, which is just a floor up boasts of similar layout and furnishing.

Yes, it is identical!

However being on the first floor, the entrance to the room is via a stairway behind each double unit. This also ensures privacy for both lower and upper occupants.

Likewise, instead of a verandah, each unit has its own private balcony.

The last is the Anjung Room.

Situated along the beachfront, these 10 single-storey beach rooms are 88 square metres in size each.

Entrance.

/>

Each room is furnished with a king-size bed, as well as a sofa bed.

The overall area is roomier and the layout much more comfortable with larger breadth just for the workdesk alone.

A lover of sunlight and wind by nature, I’m smitten with the amount of sunlight and air circulation that the Anjung Room has. Pictured below is the “separated” dressing area, with exclusive vanity units on the left and right of the whole room.

Below: View from the dressing room into the bedroom. Compare this to the view in the picture above which is taken from the bedroom facing towards the dressing room to get an idea of the layout.

So coming “out” from your bedroom, you will walk down a few steps into the dressing area. The door ahead opens out to a symmetrical sunken outdoor bath that sits in its own private garden.

Now, you tell me you don’t find this sexy??

I would love to soak in bubbles right under the sky in the open air! Yes, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) I’m not your typical modest Asian.

Again, there were large partitioned shower room and toilet.

Here’s additional pictures of the vast dressing room, complete with wardrobe and all.

The doors and windows open out to a canopied verandah looking over the beautifully landscaped tropical gardens and sea.

Well, preferably absolutely NOTHING but if you want to have an idea of what I did when I was there, scroll down!

1. Explore the grounds. The sprawling land & greens soothes both the eyes and soul.

Tanjong Jara Resort sits on a 17 hectare land so you can imagine the vast space. Just find a spot & make it your corner. No one will fight you for it.

2. Facing the South China Sea, the private beach and sea is relatively unspoiled. Enjoy it while you can.

I spent many hours just meditating and gazing into nothingness. It was wonderfully therapeutic. This was exactly what I needed; being away from the city and having time for self reflection.

3. But at most times I’m my usual cheeky self.

Being so near the beach means compulsory play time in the clean emerald waters. Surprisingly I discovered that the sea breeze and seawater here doesn’t leave an uneasy sticky feeling on my skin.

4. Both the sunrise and sunset are gorgeous. These were taken at around 6am plus.

Would you rise early for this? I would and I did.

5. Exercise!
Yes, during a holiday. It will do you good.

Instead of air conditioned thread mills in the gym and dusty, humid air on the roads; sink your feet in the soft sand & cool water while breathing in refreshing sea breeze. The extra resistance also means additional strength training and calories burned for the same duration spent.

Too rough and tough for you? No worries, there’s a gym and a tennis court as well, with rackets and balls provided at no additional charge.

6. The Spa Village at Tanjong Jara Resort is an absolute must. Lose the tension & knots in your body as the spa’s Malay healer work her skilled hands on you.

Besides, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the “mandi bunga” part as much as I did

8. Enjoy the pool. Tanjong Jara has not one, but two pools!

This is an infinity pool facing the sea and open to all guests, inclusive of children.

The Teratai Pool is specifically for adults, situated in a more private area enshrouded by trees and foliage with deeper water depth.

9. Work that mind. Explore the herb garden & take a crash course about herbs and spices from Tanjong Jara’s knowledgeable resident gardener. In just 20 minutes I picked up some useful information and health tips using herbs and leaves!

10. Enjoy your room.
Tanjong Jara has a total of 99 rooms, designed to reflect the elegance and grandeur of 17th century Malay palace.

Guests can select from 3 different interiors where each has its distinctive differences; Serambi comes with private garden & a sexy outdoor bathtub while Anjung is on the ground floor with a dedicated porch. Last but not least, Bumbung rooms look out to the merging of sea and sky from the first floor.

Each room comes with a private tub, perfect for a soak. Even sea salts are provided.

11. I can’t remember the last time I held a book in my hands. The resort has a library stocked with books and I helped myself to some enchanting chick lit novels. Oh, happy days!

12. Sleep. What could be a better time to catch up on lost slumber?

13. Explore Dungun town, a mere 15 minutes drive from the resort. I had the Volvo XC60 at my disposal and we went with Chef Florent to the market. However, the resort does provide shuttle services to Dungun town. Do inquire at the reception.

The best companion for a market excursion is with a chef! I love markets and I do try to visit one in every country I have been to. However, I realize even if you’re in the same country, different areas (if it’s far geographically or has different altitudes) does have different vegetation, livestock and seafood.

My visits to East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) markets has shown me how diversified the vegetables and seafood stocks are. Since this is my FIRST visit to the east coast, I was curious to check out the markets here as well.

The locals were more than happy to share some recipes if you ask. For example, this is the mirror fish that I had during my dinner with Chef Florent.

13. EAT. Loads preferably. Like me!

I first met Chef Florent Passard and Chef Nicolas Le Toumelin at Shook! Starhill Gallery in January 2011. Back then, both could barely converse in English, thus making any effort for a Q & A session difficult.
Now a year plus later, I had the privilege to savour a full course dinner personally prepared by Chef Florent.

After his short stint at Shook!, Chef Florent (left in the picture above) has returned to Muse Hotel in Saint Tropez briefly before he was transfered to Tanjong Jara Resort, where now he takes charge of the resort’s menu redesign while simultaneously injecting fresh perspective into the dining options here.

Barely 2 months into the job, Chef Florent has been diligently experimenting with the local seafood and produce. My dinner that night showcased some of his “experimental dishes”.

Below: Dinner under the stars, on the soft sand facing the South China Sea and cooled by the gentle evening breeze.

A shoot of Tomato Gazpacho and Cookie Baked with Parmesan and served with Olive tapenade commenced the evening.

It was the subsequent courses that really flaunted Chef Florent’s expertise in seafood.
Our appetiser, a local tuna was cleverly crusted with a coat of sesame for a nutty flavour, effectively masking any fishy odor. This piece sit on a flim of shoju jelly, which imparts a salty essence to the piece of perfectly cooked tuna.

Squid Tart with Povencale Style Vegetables.
I admired the finely julienned strips of perfect chewy squids. Though subtle, it was a nice touch and makes for an easier chew; not to mention being asthetically pleasing as well, since the strips curled prettily.

This came sitting in a buttery, crusty tart which complemented the savoury fillings of sweet peppers and aubergines sauted with onions. The foam/cream you see below is made from reduced chicken stock with milk and perfumed with lemongrass, rosemary and thyme.

If you’re starting to feel things are getting “fishy” here, your intuition is not far off. Chef Florent specialty is seafood, so it wasn’t a surprise that the main for the evening was well, fish.

Mirror Fish and Mackerel with purple sweet potato, carrot mousse, aubergine.

I had no idea what was mirror fish and I personally detest mackerel. The dry, flaky texture of mackerel flesh somewhat puts me off.

Thanks to Chef Florent, I discover newfound appreciation for mackerel. As pictured below, both fishes were soft, flaky and moist. The natural sweet flavour was present, and amazingly, these weren’t even imported fish, but were caught just off the coast of Terengganu.

Great care were taken for each component on the plate, rounding up the whole dish nicely. The spread of orange is pureed carrot with milk and turmeric; sweet and smooth. A tuber lover, I wiped the mash purple potato clean off the palte. Kudos to Chef Florent for making such simple, comfort food so palatable. Most mash are guilty of being overly buttered and creamed, but this one was perfect.
The dainty portion of aubergine took many steps to prepare; starting with cutting an aubergine into 2, slow oven-baking it in foil with garlic oil and lastly scooped from its skin before presented on the plate. All details are in place; ensuring an enjoyable dish.

We rounded our meal nicely (and thankfully without any seafood, though it was be interesting to have a SWEET fish mousse for dessert) with Green Tea Tiramisu in a Chocolate Cup.

It was fitting end to the meal, delicate creamy mousse green tea with caramelized pistachio and walnuts in honey.

As the evening progressed, a real bon fire was lit to keep us warm. My, it has been decades since I had a bonfire dinner, back in those days as a girl guide.

Tanjong Jara Resort has a total of 3 different dining venues, each offering distinctively cuisine to suit different palates and preference.
Here, the fare on offer is matched in variety only by the settings where you can savour your meal. Gazing out to sea at the Nelayan, under the shade of rustling palms at Teratai Terrace or over the meandering river at Di Atas Sungei.

My dinner was at Nelayan, helmed by Chef Florent Passard, and where a variety of Asian and Western light meals are served for lunch and Western cuisine at dinner.

Nelayan assumes a romantic ambience after sunset and guests have the option of enjoying a delightful alfresco dining experience on the beach featuring bamboo torches and the gentle sound of the waves (like I did!) or stay inside the warm comforts of the restaurant.

Nelayan is also perfect for an after-dinner drink by the poolside or the sea.

Thank you Chef Florent for a fantastic meal! I never knew our local seafood could taste so good!

I asked a few friends recently if they would buy flowers for special occasions and I was most surprised to their responses. A cynic and a total unromantic female, my idea of gifts are limited to cash or diamonds.
I have since expanded the list to include properties and return flights to exotics countries but NEVER had I appreciated FLOWERS.

Fortunately for mankind, people do still queue for flowers on special occasions such as Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.

Last year, thousands of specially air-flown tulips were snapped up as Malaysians grabbed these unique blooms for their special ones (I’m sure some were for their other halfs and not only mums).

The flowers were for a good cause as well, in support of selected charity organisations and thanks to supportive sponsors, EACH imported tulip is a mere RM5!

Yes, that further explains the queue right?

Every year, these tulips, specially flown-in by KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines; is sold out within hours.

Well, if I have to receive flowers, I would prefer them to be more exotic than roses and ermm.. what flowers do people normally give?
Anyhow, unique blooms are preferred right?

This seasonal flower is usually planted in October and November so that it grows in time to thrive in the cold winter and only flowers for a short time from mid April to end May, making them a sought after and unique bloom.

The Netherlands are famous for their cultivated tulips and is one of the most dominating countries in export of tulips and tulip bulbs, while annually busloads of tourists visit the Netherlands to see the tulip fields in bloom.

Luckily for us, no trip to the Netherlands is necessary for now. Come and handpick your own colourful bouquet of beautiful tulips at the 14th KLM Annual Charity Tulip Sale which will take place on Saturday, 12 May 2012 at the Concourse Level of Sungei Wang Plaza from 11.00 a.m. onwards.

Although different tulip colors carry distinct meanings – yellow tulips symbolizing cheerful thoughts, white conveying forgiveness and purple representing royalty – a Turkish legend may be responsible for the red tulip’s symbolism. The story goes that a prince named Farhad was love struck by a maiden named Shirin. When Farhad learned that Shirin had been killed, he was so overcome with grief that he killed himself – riding his horse over the edge of a cliff. It’s said that a scarlet tulip sprang up from each droplet of his blood, giving the red tulip the meaning “perfect love.”

Priced at RM5 each, there will be 3,500 stalks for sale including the double tulip and the fundraiser targets to raise RM28,000 for charity this year.

NOTES:

This year’s beneficiary is the Special Children Society of Ampang (SCSOA).

Pledging its support for the 4th year is Rabobank – a global financial services leader specialising in food and agribusiness banking – who has committed to contribute RM1 for every tulip sold, so that consumers only have to pay RM5 instead of RM6 each thus making it more affordable to the public.
In addition to making the tulips more affordable, the Dutch bank will also top up another RM2 for every tulip sold, bringing their contribution this year to RM10,500.

Disclaimer:
Pictures are from last year’s event thus the tulips bought in this year may differ in size, colours and species.

So THE CHICKEN FOLDOVER is back!

Finally! A healthy alternative to the otherwise greasy, fattening option which are typical of fast-food chains. I’m not condemning all fast food of course, but frankly for an aging woman (ahem, yes me) who has to watch her diet and weight, I avoid highly processed food as much as possible.
Having said that, if the craving kicks in, I’ll still give in but always opting for the healthiest choice on the menu. But that also means having to go through the hassle of getting weird stares when I use tissues to wipe off the mayo from my burgers.

Yes I do that. Sue me. I have to watch my weight ok?
However, when McD launched their Chicken Foldover years back, it was a God-sent as it was the only option I’ll settle for whenever my college gang converge at McDs for assignments.

So what’s goes into a McDonald’s Chicken FoldoverTM that makes it “healthier”?
For a start, the patties are grilled. Secondly, there’s more vegetables in a foldover than most of other McDs’ burgers.

· Two (2) grilled chicken patties with fresh tomato, lettuce & tasty garlic
sauce
· Toasted flatbread peppered with kalonji seeds
· Priced from RM8.60 on the a la carte menu onwards.

I saw the annoucement on their FB page few days back and shared the news on my FB. Here’s some of the comments I got.

Frankly, I can’t recall if it’s smaller or otherwise, but the taste is similar.

And I’m still wiping off the mayo. Heck, it’s tasty enough without it so why add on the calories right? Your thighs will thank you for it!

Being a foodie, I can’t stand not knowing how anything NEW taste, so I took a spoonful of the new McDonald’s Caramel Sundae and instantly regretted it. Well, for anyone needing a sugar rush, THIS IS IT!

Next was their recent Horlicks Crunch McFlurry. Like everyone else, I loved the crunchy bits added into the soft swirl.

Again I only managed one-third of the whole cup. Too sweet again for me but I still like it. So moderation is key. It’s more practical to share it with someone.

As for the new Chicken Muffin, I have tried it too! You can check out my post HERE.

And yes, I wiped off the mayonnaise. Messy, I know.

Well I have to thank McDonalds for keeping the menu fresh with new choices from time to time. I have tried Mcdonalds in Thailand, China, Korea (they have Bulgogi burgers which was delicious!!), HongKong, Australia (Wagyu Beef Burger!), and even while I’m in Singapore last week for World Gourmet Summit 2012, the Teriyaki Chicken Burger!

The Chicken FoldoverTM is now available in all McDonald’s restaurants until 22 August.
It is priced at RM8.60 on the à la carte menu; RM9.95 for a medium McValue Lunch and McValue Dinner sets; while for the medium McValue Meal set it is priced at RM12.25.

So has anyone tried any Mcdonalds burgers anywhere else in the world? Share please?
