Mohd Raffe Restaurant began business since 1959 in Batu Gantong, the racecourse in Penang and subsequently moved to Pulau Tikus in 1998.
This 24 hours shoplot outlet is small and is only ventilated by fans. The ambiance is typical of a mamak shop; casual dining atmosphere, bustling with diners and workers and alive with chatter.
In the evenings, tables are set up on the shoplot’s walkway and on the street just in front of it to accommodate more customers and also for the open air dining atmosphere.

This is the nasi kandar outlet that I had patronised since I was a child. This is the nasi kandar I grew up with as a Penangite.
I have eaten at many nasi kandar outlets, but Raffe is to me, the best of them all.
Call it nostalgia, call me biased, but many Penangite or even first time visitors would agree that Raffe’s curries are distinctively different and their fried chicken is out of this world.

The order system here works the same like any other mamak outlets. You get in line for your turn at the food counter. While in queue, salivate and decide on what you would like to have.
The famous fried chicken is stacked up high on one shelve, pots of curries are bubbling and steam rises from the chaffing dish of all the food laid out; all emanating the most delicious smells.

The person behind the counter will start with piping hot steamed rice on a plate and on your command he will scoop, pick and arrange your selected food on your plate of rice.
Once you’re done, he proceeds to flood your rice with small scoops of curry from the many different types of curries in front of him. You can stop him or you can request for more of any particular type of curry.
The combination of these curry flavours is probably why each meal here is never quite the same.

My standard order is their Ayam Masak Madu (Honey Chicken), fried cabbage, an egg and okras.
Over the years the prices has increased marginally but the taste remained consistent.
Thankfully both the quality and quantity remained the same. Food is always fresh and the servings are acceptable for the price charged.
The chicken pieces are still as large, each serving of squid eggs or vegetables are still generous and the eggs had not downgraded in size either.

Once you have your nasi kandar in hand, secure a table and tuck in.
A wait staff would appear to take your beverage order. In fact once you’re seated, you can wave over a wait staff and add to your order from your table; for example, extra curry, roti paratha, an additional piece of chicken and so forth.

While the nasi kandar is available 24 hours, Raffe’s special nasi tomato is only available from 10am to about 1pm.
The sweet, fragrant nasi tomato is another must try.

If you would like to order the roti paratha, you can either inform the guy busy flipping the dough at the roti canai station or secure a seat first and wait for a staff to come by and order from him.
Both the roti and drinks will be served to you at your table.

Besides nasi kandar, the roti paratha at Raffe is excellent too. The dough is well stretched resulting in flaky, light and almost grease free roti. There are no uncooked, doughy parts nor rubbery texture for Raffe’s roti.
Tear the roti and dunk into the accompanying dhall and the curry while it’s still hot and enjoy the crisp bread with the delicious curry.

When I found out that my childhood mamak had expanded into another outlet on Bishop Street, I congratulated them and paid a visit to the new outlet.
This outlet offers Western cuisine such as chicken chop, lamb chop and fish and chips in addition to the standard mamak fare.

We ordered a plate of noodles, a chicken chop and their nasi tomato here. Suffice to say that all were good and we left feeling satiated and happy.

Sigh. I do miss Penang Nasi Kandar.
There are many good, decent, subpar outlets in Penang but my recommendation would always be to go to Raffe’s.
I haven’t found favourite in KL as yet. Any recommendations from YOU? 🙂
