DAY 2 Victoria, Australia: My lunch – Miss Marple’s Tea Room, Dandenong Ranges #BeckyinOzzie

Miss Marple’s Tea Room was touted as the place to be for scones and tea. Perfect for a true blue English meal they have said.
The tearoom’s quaint cottage exterior plus the cosy insides excludes old English charm that begs to be experienced at least once at your lifetime.

I think this is as close as I can get to actual England, considering that I don’t think I’ll ever visit England due to the notorious weather.

There is always an epic line to get in and that day it was no exception. I waited til after my meal (after lunch hours) to take this picture otherwise the entrance is not visible!

Business was brisk and very touristy. Those who know me would know I hate these places. However, our guide Reiner assured us that it is popular with the locals as well as the food there speaks for itself.

The ambiance is there alright, with even the waitresses dressed to the part.

Dining area are a little bit cramped and the tables are placed close to one another. Somehow, nobody seemed to mind. I glanced around & thought to myself; “Wow, the food must be pretty exceptional“. By now, I was convinced that my lunch was going to be splendid.

Once seated, I ordered the The Devonshire Scones ($8.50 = RM26.27) immediately….

…and nearly fell off my chair when it was served.
Hey, I want my scones ROUND, fluffy & buttery. These are SQUARE.
Ok, while I can overlook the shape, how could anyone proclaim this place has incredible scones when it’s dry, bland & spongy???
Thank god for the raspberry jam and freshly whipped cream which though wasn’t exception, was at least nice.

Since it’s lunch, we shared a Welsh Rarebit, with mature English cheddar, egg, Guinness, mustard and spices ($12.50 = RM38.63). I think we ordered it cos it sounded so ermm.. interesting.

Trust me, it wasn’t. I couldn’t detect any of the other ingredients save for the cheese and a whiff of alcohol. I’ve never had Welsh Rarebit before, so am not sure whether it’s supposed to taste that way.

Next was the piping hot cottage pie. We ordered the beef, (AUD14.00 = RM43.26).

It was very homely. And underseasoned. A dash of salt & pepper would help. Nothing to shout about really.

After all that, let’s just say I wasn’t too impressed nor pleased. At least Wilson & Reiner had no complains about their drinks. The iced chocolate was fabulous I’m sure, as Wilson was just happily slurping away. 😉

We spied the decadent looking Belgian waffles on a few tables and ordered one.

And it turned out to be our best choice that day! Woots!

The waffles were heavenly. The cream, the stewed berries, the vanilla ice cream with the crisp, fluffy buttery waffles was just what we needed to wrap up our lunch experience nicely. Oh, and also to placate my sour mood. Heh. 🙂

Lastly, we washed it all down with some coffee.

The very jam that we had with our scones were sold here as well as many other homemade jams with mish-mash of flavours like lemon & grape curd, Orange & passionfruit marmalade, rhubard & plum jam, etc.

I bought a bottle of this – Miss Marples salad dressing as a gift. You definitely can’t find this anywhere else!

Miss Marple’s interior is dotted with tea pots (what else?), photos from the nostalgic TV series, cute knick- knacks which all adds to the overall ambiance.

Well, their food might not be extraordinary but its simple, comfort food that evokes all sorts of warm & fuzzy feelings and overall, most are done quite well. Plus, you have to go for the novel experience of being in an old fashioned teahouse with the weather to match. Totally out of this world. 😉

ahhh~ my favourite dine in Dandenong. I can see why you r complaining about the scones as i, myself have some reservations on it. However, i like going there mainly for the ambience, and pure comford food (now if i can overlook the price factor) =)
