Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant, One World Hotel

My Chinese New Year culinary adventure continues. This time around, it’s at Zuan Yuan of One  World Hotel. You would probably think that I’d be bored with Chinese New Year’s feast offerings by now (as of writing I have sampled 8 different CNY previews at 8 different hotels), but I’m glad to report that I’m not a bit bored as yet, and I don’t foresee that I’ll get bored of it anytime soon, considering that  each restaurant that I’ve visited has it’s own unique feast offerings.
More often than not, I found myself being pleasantly surprised with the twists and turns in each dishes that was presented before me.

For instance, in Zuan Yuan, I “loh sang” with fleshy soft shelled crabs instead of the conventional raw fish.

There were copious amount of freshly shredded vegetables and pomelo pulps in this Yee Sang to give it an extra sweet and juicy crunch. Moreover, the accompanying sauce is well balanced & the sweetness just right, which is exactly how I like my Yee Sang.

Similarly I would give the Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Dried Scallop, Fish Lips and Crab Meat a thumb’s up. There were ample dried scallops, crab meat, fish lips and yes, genuine shark fins to ensure your money’s worth. The soup was boiled to perfection too, and it’s everything a traditional shark’s fin soup should be.
NOTE: You can opt for the non-shark fin version.

A dish that symbolizes abundant wealth year after year is the fish dish, another crucial element to the auspicious 8 courses CNY feast. Out of the 8 courses, the fish dish has always been my favourite. That night, I was quite pleased with the Steamed Star Garouper with Mandarin Orange Skin and Fresh Bean Curd. The added zest and citrusy aroma in the fish certainly made it more palatable than a plainly steamed one.

Up next is Zuan Yuan Crispy Roasted DuckNow, this is what I call a roast duck. It has all the right elements a roast duck should have. Thin and crispy skin that makes you itch to just eat the skin, and tender, not too gamey meat.

Another familiar preparation of prawns is the Wok Fried Tiger Prawn with Oats and Chilli. And just like the prawns, the Braised Abalone with Dried Oyster and Sea Moss in ‘Golden’ Bag was lip-smackingly good.

One noteworthy item from the braised abalone dish was the money bag. The golden bags were laid in a flood of savoury sauce and was surrounded with crispy blanched broccoli and assortments of mushrooms like Enoki, Shittake and black mushrooms. The golden bags and mushrooms absorbed the sauce well and each mouthful was a bagful of goodness. 🙂

For the carbs dish, we were served Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Assorted Preserved Meat, Chicken Sausage and Yam.

This was was nicely done and very flavourful with the usual ingredients of waxed meat, sausages and yam.
Overall, the Chinese New Year feast at  Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant didn’t miss any mark nor did it spring any surprises. Dishes here didn’t deviate far from its traditional form and flavour. You can expect quality and consistency and thus be assured that your traditional CNY feast here won’t disappoint.

BELOW: The sweet finish – Chilled Soy Bean with Sea Coconut, Lotus Seed and Black Pearl.

But I personally would give the Pan Fried ‘Nian Gao’ with Cheddar Cheese a miss. It tasted as peculiar as it sounds.

Ooo, interesting, using chicken sausages as a substitute for the usual pork liver sausage and lap cheong for the rice dish. I guess the chicken sausages might not be as flavorsome as the pork ones, but still sounds like a good effort 😀

Yea, for non-porky outlets they have to make do the best they can! 😀

I wish I cpuld be there for CNY. I have seen nothing to dislike so far. The moody grouper is asking to be picked up and crunched as do the prawns, crabs and duck. No cutlery apart from the soup!
