Chinese New Year Menu 2013: Tai Zi Heen, Prince Hotel & Residence KL

Conveniently in the Bukit Bintang area, Tai Zi Heen of Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur offers a fine selection of dim sum and other Cantonese specialties. Word has it that the chef in the restaurant’s aim is to tantalise and delight even the fussiest foodie. So, to say that I was really looking forward to sample their Chinese New Year’s feast offering this year is an understatement.

As usual, Yee Sang was the first dish offered to us. After so many Yee Sang, I can tell you that generally all the freshly prepared Yee Sang in the hotels that I’ve sampled are good, and this Vegetarian Snow Pear Yee Sang is no exception.

The platter consists of a garden of freshly shredded vegetables, fruits and less of the pickled, coloured and fried items. In fact, most restaurants in hotels favour fresh vegetables, fruits and less of the pickled, coloured and fried items, though some of it (the fried and the pickled stuffs) are still present as a platter of yee sang does need a bit of colour and crunch. Refreshing in it’s own right, I was informed that the Vegetarian Snow Pear Yee Sang is the house special, and all of their guests who had tried it, loved it.

Instead of the soup, the compulsory black moss dish was next.
The Stewed Dried Oysters with Fatt Choy and Lettuce was served with a mould of lettuce underneath the other premium ingredients and it inspired a grin from me. You ought to be wondering why, but if you have been following my Chinese New Year’s gastronomic escapades, I’ve somewhat developed quite a dislike towards broccoli in the auspicious black moss dish. Broccoli were mercifully absent in this dish. I have nothing against broccolis, but too much of it literally bore me to tears.

I can’t find any faults with this dish. It’s packed generously with of all the prerequisite prosperous ingredients like scallop and whatnot and was fairly enjoyable.

Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Dices Prawns, Scallops and Grouper was pretty traditional as well. They did not spare the shark. Yes, you’re reading that right, Tai Zi Heen still offers shark’s fin, but you have the option to exclude the controversial premium ingredient in your soup if you wish.

Environmentalists and animal lovers alike would have scorned the soup, but I’m rather unrepentant. Personally, the soup was tasty enough for me thanks to the generous amount of seafood which lend a natural sweetness to the broth.

The fowl for the evening is Roasted Chicken Dusted with Crispy Garlic and Five Spice Salt.  Now, I have been dining at hotels for all my Chinese New Year’s feast reviews and frankly, I don’t expect to be disappointed with a dish as “simple” as a roast chicken.
And rightfully, the roasted bird did not disappoint. It was marvelously done; non-greasy but with oh-so delightfully crispy skin and juicy meat.

I was pleased to discover that even at the breast meat was flavourful and tender. The roasted chicken was good enough on its own, though you may be inclined to rub some of the accompanying condiments on the side.

The fish dish was another shining star that evening.
Chef’s Special Baked Cod Fish.

Fish has always been my favourite dish for such 8 courses dinners. I’m always of opinion that a delicate and oily fish like cod, which tends to have it’s own fatty flavour and thus are usually moist even if cooked very simply, are best savoured steamed but anyone would appreciate the effort done by the Chef for our cod fish that evening.

This is a remarkable recipe; cod fillets mixed in batter before baked. We squeezed the chef for more info; and though we didn’t manage to get the recipe in exact measurements, the chef did indulge us with certain ingredients that was present in the fish; which includes bacon, onion, mushrooms, cheese and egg. Well, that explains the myriad of flavours with each tasty bite that we had.

Stir-Fried Glutinous Rice with Chinese-style Preserved Duck was unforgettable that night. Unforgettably salty, that is. But we forgot it soon enough though, when dessert was served.

Warm Almond Puree with Glutinous Rice Dumplings was an absolute delight for me!
I have always loved Chinese-style almond puree and was thrilled to see a steaming hot one with glutinous rice balls served that night. The entire dessert experience was notched a level higher with the crispy Deep-Fried Chinese New Year Cake with Thousand Layer Puff Pastry which wasn’t just plain saccharine sweet. Other than the nian gou, the other pastry was fabulous too.
The filling was sweet corn with salted egg yolk and milk. It was slightly grainy with an exquisitely rich, sweet taste. I wished I had more stomach space to indulge a few more!
If Tai Zi Heen sells this in a box/package for take-away, I’ll be the first to buy a dozen! Yes, I loved it that much. 🙂
