Butter + Beans At Seventeen – cakes, coffee & pastries!

Last Saturday Kevin came over to help me get started with baking but we ended up wondering through half of PJ & KL, exploring new eateries and eating/drinking the day away. I’m afraid my oven remained idle with the film of dust on top growing thicker with each passing day. I shall do something about it before year end.
I promise. .. *fingers crossed*.

Since I love desserts and he loves his coffee, I suggested Butter + Beans At Seventeen, a mere 15 minutes drive (no jam) away. I have been seeing some pictures on my FB and was really tempted by the cakes and pastries.

It was supposed to be easy to find but thanks to me and my sense of direction, it took us 3 rounds circling the blocks within Happy Mansion to locate this small, non-descriptive shoplot. Anyhow if you know where Food Foundry is, it’s more or less just the OTHER SIDE of the SAME block of Food Foundry. I hope my “directions” made sense. Good luck. LOL!

Once inside my attention was diverted by these really gorgeous looking croissants; golden and puffy. As I stood there attempting to choose only ONE pastry/cake, I commented to Alex; owner of Butter + Beans At Seventeen that the croissants looked really good. He was upfront to tell me that these were actually more “bready” in texture versus the really French flaky types. With that I dismissed the croissants and looked for an alternative. I still prefer my croissant flaky I’m afraid.

However I should mention that the pastries here are made with french Lescure butter which certainly ensures better aroma and taste in comparison to pastries sold elsewhere.

I’m not a fan of cinnamon so it’s out for these rolls as well though they do definitely takes the title for the best looking cinnamon rolls ever.

The fig tart got my attention. I love tarts abundant with REAL fruits and the cake-y texture such as the one you see below.

I continued to ignore all pastries and savouries though I must say they were as tempting as the croissants earlier. But I was really in the mood for something sweet.

The raspberry orchid cake got my attention so it was between this or the Fig Tart.

In the end the fig tart won edged out the Raspberry Orchid cake as the cake did looked a bit dry.
Kevin got himself a cappuccino and me a hot chocolate. I must say it was a cup of wonderful hot chocolate, not too thick nor sweet but with enough cocoa to satisfy. Be forewarned though as it’s not your typical Max Brenner rich, thick chocolate but lighter and so much more drinkable!

Kevin’s – cappuccino (RM10).
His verdict: Rich tasting cappuccino from the first sip, with mostly sweet notes with a slight touch of acidity. Smooth drinking from start to the end.

My Hot Chocolate; using Valhorna chocolate powder (RM8).
The fact that Valhorna was used rather than Van Houten already won brownie points from me. I loved that it was smooth, slightly bitter and not thick.

My fig tart; lovely, nutty moist and not overly sweet.

I didn’t like the crust though as it was rather greasy.

Once you get Kevin started on coffee, he can’t stop. I can say the same for alcohol too. He’s the best drinking buddy ever! :DD
Kevin’s espresso and his verdict: The espresso @ butter and beans was made using the ristretto style, where the extraction was stopped short of the usual practice, resulting in a more acidic taste which then develops to sweeter notes (refer to the stages of espresso from the RAW post). This is something I look forward to when I order an espresso, as most places the barista just leave the machine to run its course when pulling a shot.

One last order from Food Foundry; Raspberry Mille Crepe cake. I had to admit, it was really good, light though it was creamy and not overly sweet.

Butter + Beans At Seventeen sits is definitely worth a visit. Coffee is done right, prices are decent and they serve fabulous pastries! 🙂
