As far as I know, Nona Bali is the first and only restaurant to offer authentic Balinese cuisine in Penang.
Partners Peter and Sudiarta assures their diners that only wholesome, fresh and MSG/artificial and enhancer free food are served here. Furthermore, by using halal ingredients, Nona Bali ensures that diners of every race and religion are given the opportunity to have a taste of delicious Balinese food minus the flight and accommodation cost to the island itself.

Apart from food, the restaurant also provide diners with a holistic dining experience as the venue is tastefully decorated with Balinese art and furniture, most of which were imported direct from Bali.
Some of these are for sale while those from the owners’ personal collection are for the eyes only.

Partners Peter Tait and I Made Sudiarta, one a Penangite and another Balinese, set the bar high. Nona Bali aims to serve up the most authentic Balinese fare possible by careful selection of local ingredients and sourcing the originals as much as possible from Indonesia.

The best quality Indonesian spice and herbs are imported in and whatever else that are not available are made-in-house.
The outlet started out focusing only on dinners and had recently begun to serve the lunch crowd as well.

We stepped in recently to try their lunch sets and we were glad that Peter was around to speak with us.
The lunch menu is limited for now and between the both of us we shared the Set Nasi Campur Be Pasih (Balinese mixed fish rice ) – RM24.90 and the Set Nasi Campur Be Siap (Balinese mixed chicken rice) – RM22.90.
Each set comes with a dessert of the day and a choice of either lime juice or peach tea for our beverages.

The rice sat in the middle of each set in a standard conical shape. Both sets have soups; chicken soup for the chicken set and vice versa.
Those who prefer their food spicy should opt for the fish as the fiery sambal really packs a punch. The kampong chicken paled in comparison!

The sides for both sets were pretty similar, a salad, crackers (Keropok tempih imported from Medan), slices of raw cucumbers and tomatoes and the soup.
Both had a skewer each; sate lilit – aromatic grilled fish paste wrapped around lemongrass for the fish set and Sate Be Siap – grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce for the chicken set.

However, the chicken set had 3 additional sides; half a hard-boiled egg, shredded chicken and finely shredded coconut. With so many items on a plate, we thought the set lunch was rather value for money.
Nata de Coco with Lychee was the dessert of the day and it was really refreshing after the rather flavorful meal.

It’s great to finally welcome Balinese cuisine (an authentic one too!) in Penang.
While char kuey teow and laksa is quintessentially Penang, my halal trail finds it difficult to just recommend such vendors. Besides, Penang should be able to offer more than just local fare as it is popular as a culinary paradise and I’m glad to know there are more and more outlets offering international cuisine in my hometown now. 🙂

  2. Wong Pow Long

Penang is always limited by halal restaurant with great dining environment. Nona Bali do create a new selection for us to go to try and enjoy the food. This should draw a lot of factory crowd there.

Hi hi Wong! Thanks for dropping by! 🙂
But I don’t think Penang is limited by halal restaurants though, arent most restaurants there non-halal? Or you meant the hawkers are usually non-halal but other than that, restaurants are halal?

  3. Gregory Loh

Balinese in Penang. . Hmmm.. It would have been better if Balinese restaurants in Msia dared to serve pork. Yes halal kitchens are great but pork, Babi guling, good bakso – the very essence of good Balinese food is missing
