Baked cheese tarts: Bake Plan SS2, Uncle Tetsu, Lavendar Bakery, Tokyo Secret & Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart

I had thought the molten cheese tart craze is quite passé by now.

However, surprisingly, there is still a strong following going on as I’ve people asking me “Where is the best molten cheese tart in KL?

I’ve posted about my disappointing baked cheese tarts experience before HERE.
My rating was (1) Bake (Hong Kong) over (2) Tokyo Secret (IPC) and coming in last would be (3) Hokkaido Cheese Tart (Empire Subang).

Today, I’ve revised my ratings to:
(1) L Table at Lavender Bakery at 1 Utama Shopping Centre
(2) Tokyo Secret, IPC
(3) Bake Plan SS2
(4) Uncle Tetsu 1 Utama Shopping Centre
(5) Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart, Empire Subang

The above ratings are solely for the Malaysian brands.
I would rate BAKE Cheese Tart the BEST over all the 5 brands above, but BAKE Cheese Tart is not available in Malaysia (yet).

But for a better understanding on how the Bake Cheese Tart is like, below is a short description.

Special mention: Bake Cheese Tart

Since Bake Cheese Tart is not available in Malaysia (as yet, but maybe soon since it is already in Singapore!), I’ve been getting my fix in Singapore and Hong Kong.
It’s competitor; Pablo Cheese Tart is opening a branch soon in 1 Utama but reviews has not been kind so far.

Apparently, my friends and readers who has tried it in Japan felt that (via comments on my FB & posting) Bake Cheese Tart still reigns supreme.

Bake Cheese Tart (Hong Kong) was truly cheesy; like seriously eating melted cheese ‘cheesy‘. A blend of 3 cheeses, it imparted more aroma and complexity in each bite.

My only gripe? The rather thick crust.

(1) L Table at Lavender Bakery at 1 Utama Shopping Centre

Priced at a reasonable RM6.00, this may not be the cheapest in town but it is the tastiest. For me it is worth paying for compared to the rest that I’ve reviewed here.

Watch this video to see the molten flow of the cheese tart.

This is the best that I’ve tried so far and the only one I would recommend now!

(2) Tokyo Secret, IPC

Tokyo Secret’s filings are more creamy (milky actually) and slightly sweeter compared to Bake’s.
The Tokyo Secret crust was much more crumbly and lighter to eat.

In conclusion, Tokyo Secret is more like a molten milk custard with mild cheese flavour.

(3) Uncle Tetsu

I bought it and walked 5 minutes back to my house and ate it immediately.

It was barely molten though the custard remained soft. The cheese flavour is there, but somehow not particularly memorable.
However, considering that it was only RM4.50 each, I’ll rate it “acceptable for the price”.

(4) Bake Plan SS2

As you can see from this video, it took me a few bites before I could speak of its flavour.
And yes, once bought I had stepped out to eat it immediately as I was hungry.

Sadly I was left disappointed.
I was struggling to identify the cheese taste. It was extremely mild!

They got the molten part down pat as it was milky and velvety but if you are expecting cheese, you will be disappointed.

RM4.50 for one.

(5) Hokkaido Bake Cheese Tart, Empire Shopping Centre

The crust is buttery but the filling is milky and any cheese flavour was practically non- existent.

It was the most disappointing of the lot and it made me wonder if they

For RM5.80 this is a sad, overpriced tart.

So ther you go, the 5 cheese tarts that I’ve tried in Klang Valley so far.

The best molten cheese tart would be the one from Lavendar Bakery (for now) and I look forward to any recommendation of a better one that this so let me know if you’ve discover a nice molten cheese tart ok? 😀

There is another cheese tart option at Kajang but I won’t be heading there.

However, if you would like to try DURIAN (Musang King) cheese tart, then you might want to give this place a shot.
