Ashley’s by Living Food @ Telawi, Bangsar – healthy, organic cuisine

Following the success of their first outlet in Menara Tan & Tan at Jalan Tun Razak (known as Living Food Bistro) Ashley’s at Telawi aims to serves their fans at the Bangsar/Damansara/PJ area.
And yes I’m one of their happy fans now that Ashley’s is nearer to home. 🙂

The menu is almost similar for both outlets and for my inaugural visit to Ashley’s, I ordered the items that I had wanted to try in Living Food Bistro but haven’t had the chance; starting with the Posh Lamb Burger. If you don’t already know, I’m a crazy burger eater so any burger on the menu is bound to catch my attention.

The patty was nicely seasoned and the whole ensemble was well put together – creamy melted brie, peppery arugula with drizzle of balsamic and house speciality nut cream sandwiched in specially baked red yeast buns. Good flavours without overly heavy tasting and unique enough to stand out from the crowd of lamb burgers out there.

The menu at Ashley’s does offer quite a variety but at the first week of operation was marred by inconsistent preparation of dishes (our next order the Quinoa Salad was literally tasteless) and half of the items on the menu was unavailable. We exchanged thoughts with our friends seated at another table and their meal wasn’t exemplary either.
In consideration of the price tag we were certainly disappointed.

Good news is follow up visits since have been substantially better. Service is smoother and the team are starting to get their engines into gear. They served an amazing Living Mushroom Foie Gras (served with sundried tomato flatbread & a dash of truffle oil), RM38 and hearty, soul warming Quail Currant Stew (Braised quail in a tarragon infused red wine sauce), also RM38.

Note: No geese or duck were harmed in the making of this foie gras as it is made from MUSHROOMS!
Spread the “foie gras” over the flaxseed crackers and rosemary flatbread and add the carrot and sundried tomatoes. Eat all these together and revel in its flavours and textures.

Chef Ashley makes the most of her ingredients and her new creations are outstanding. The mushroom foie gras aside, this Spinach Mai Gai (a vegan version of Loh Mai Kai – steamed glutinous rice dish commonly found in dim sum) deserved special mention as well.
Dabai, a Sarawakian olives, among other ingredients made up this intriguing parcel of quinoa, mushrooms, ginkgo and salted egg.

The Spinach Mai Gai is part of the Organic Dim Sum set (RM75). The full set includes Pearl Snapper Asparagus Beancurd Skin Wrap, Scallion Sesame Pancake, Shrimp & Beluga Lentil Dumpling (the ones you see below), Spinach Mai Gai & Sweet Almond Butter Cake.

The green dumplings are the seafood ones. The skin is green from spirulina (no colourings are used in Ashley’s) and it encased prawns and black lentils. The red on the other hand is the vegetarian dumpling which has tofu, lentils and mushrooms. The skin takes its crimson hue from red yeast.
While the execution is commendable, the skin was just too thick for my liking.

Portobello Mushroom & Buckwheat Polenta Stack (served with pink peppercorn rhubarb purée & mushroom ragout) – RM42.

DESSERTS: Novel and pretty.

Apple Noodle (RM15 ) – organic French apple spirals, macadamia nut cream drop, dusted with shavings of macadamia, drizzle of chocolate sauce and a handful of berries.

This is really good – Salted Caramel Apple Cake, presented in rose form with lush petals of dehydrated apples. The base is a mound of salted caramel with bits of macadamia and walnut.

Beverages here are my favourite blends- Detoxication (RM12) – Ginger, cilantro, turmeric, greens, lemon, NAC, prune juice and Cardiac Arrest (RM10) – Pineapple, lemon, passionfruit, & L-Arginine.

All in all there are hits and misses on the menu but you can’t go too wrong with the meat and salads. Ashley has always been brilliant in the dessert department so remember to allocate stomach space for her sweets.

Meanwhile, Ashley’s started serving breakfast last week and from their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ashleysbangsar) I spied a hybrid of brioche, waffle and french toast creation that I’ll like to sink my teeth into pronto!
Anyone care to join me? 🙂

Gorgeous pics as usual Becky. Everything looks too healthy to me but a posh burger (anything to do with Posh spice?) would do nicely

The juices are so my kind of thing! Thanks for the heads up.
Bangsar is definitely a better location for me (no way I’m going to Tan & Tan)
