Indulgence Restaurant & Living, Ipoh – my RM790++ Qatrynka suite

God (or rather, everyone) knows that I needed a break. Oh wait, so does everyone else that’s in the city right?

The traffic jam, the unpredictable weather (why does it have to rain every single day at 5pm??? As if after-work traffic ain’t bad enough as it is!), the gets to us doesn’t it?
The city can be exciting, but at the same it wears you out as well.

For my sanity, I travel out of KL at least once a month. Last month I was in Sg for Wine for Asia, and earlier this month I was transported back to the countryside as I traipsed through the sleepy town of Pekan and Sg Lembing in Kuantan.

Short respites like this helps in its little way to sooth my consistent high strung emotions.

My latest city-runway adventure was in this charming yet romantic Tudor colonial bungalow in Ipoh.

Indulgence Restaurant and Living is no new kid on the block.
Julie Song (now, one can’t mention “Indulgence” in the same breath and miss out Julie! :) ) started out with a simple cakes & coffee joint in May 1996 in Canning Gardens, which back then was probably one of the few commercial areas in Ipoh town. Julie obviously got a winning formula in place; as her cosy cafe expanded to 2 shoplots shortly after and then in Nov 2005 Indulgence Restaurant was born, serving Modern European cuisine to the simple, laid back citizens of sleepy Ipoh.

HTC has recently announced the launch of one of its latest smartphones, the HTC Evo 3D in Malaysia (middle this year). For those of you who don’t really know who, or what HTC is, the company previously known as High Tech Computer Corporation is one of the “world’s largest players in wireless handsets” today (Forbes, 2011, p.1). From a humble contract manufacturer in 1997, HTC is now larger than Research In Motion, the company behind Blackberry, and looks set to overtake Nokia as well in terms of market capitalisation. Amazing huh?

The Evo 3D is a unique offering because it is one of the few smartphones available on the market with a 3D-capable image capture device (other than the LG Optimus 3D, and LG Optimus Pad). Running on the Android 2.3.4 “Gingerbread” OS, the Evo 3D is a slate smartphone capable of recording both stills and motion photography, in addition to possessing a autostereoscopic screen.

IMHO, the proclivity towards 3D imaging lately is a weird, but rather predictable trend in the world of entertainment and technological devices. The usefulness and practicality of wielding a 3D-capable smartphone now, however, seem to be still up for contention.

First Impressions

With the myriad of developments in the mobile phone industry in these recent years, it is hard to understand why Nokia, one of the largest and most successful brands in the world, decided to take a leave of absence when it was out in front. While this giant slumbered, many other new players emerged in the field of smartphone development. HTC, Samsung, and Apple are arguably the most prolific players in the market today, while Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Nokia have gradually fallen behind.

After what seems to be a rather rude awakening, Nokia seem to have bounced back from its stupor, and the N9 is the latest contender in the smartphone market. The N9 is Nokia’s latest flagship model, boasting a redesign, new operating system, unibody construction, and minimalistic design characteristics.

First Impressions

The box that contains the N9 (together with the charger/usb connection, Dolby earphones, and miscellaneous manuals) bears an uncanny resemblance to the iPhone’s box. Not reassuring, given that the latest slew of smartphone offerings have been iPhone-inspired. The phone unit itself, however, was a dramatic shift in terms of design from the regular copycats of the digital world.

The N9 has no buttons on the front, which almost looks as though it is trying too hard to NOT look like the iPhone. I wouldn’t blame the designer(s), though, given the similarities between the iPhone 4 and the N9. Both have more or less the same dimensions, weight, and even functionalities.

My indulgent weekend in Ipoh – check out my Qatrynka Suite at Indulgence Living!

I woke up tangled in soft, pristine white sheets this morning.

I kicked off the sheets, stepped into the colourful and romantic bathroom; washed my face under the pretty lamps shades and headed out for some Ipoh dim sum!

Take a tour with me of the opulent yet romantic Qatrynka Suite, one of the only 2 suites here in Indulgence Living.

Here are some pictures if you are too lazy to watch the video (tsk, tsk, it’s worth watching I tell you!), but they don’t do justice to the place. The feel and ambiance is indescribable.

Toshiba Ultrabook – Portege Z830 – Lightest & thinnest in the WORLD!

Here I go again, on an ultrabook rampage that doesn’t seem to be winding down anytime soon. I’m blaming it on the ever-happening tech scene; with the current trend where all the major tech brands choose to launch their version of an ultrabook all days or within weeks from each other.

With each launch I get more muddled in the head. The Asus Zenbook  was ultrasexy, and 2 weeks after Lenovo teases with some really funky features. Today Toshiba unveiled their Portege Z830, which they claim to be the LIGHTEST & THINNEST in the world.

Toshiba Ultrabook - Portege Z830-1

After being appointed as an Acer Aspire S3 Brand Evangelist (post–> HERE), I finally experienced the freedom of a lightweight laptop and yet at the same realized the limitations of one. While I accepted the lack of a CD/DVD drive, I still think having more I/O ports should be a serious consideration.

2 USB ports? Like seriously? And what’s wrong with throwing in an Ethernet jack? And being a blogger, I can’t live without a SD card reader, having to transfer pictures from reviews and event to the laptop for editing and uploading to the blog sometimes up to 3 times a day.

So when it was announced that the Portege Z830 is the only ultrabook (currently la..) with full ports functionality, I immediately asked if there is a media price. :P
